Midnight Sun Kodiak Brown Ale

Midnight Sun Kodiak Brown Ale

Rugged yet smooth, Kodiak Brown Ale balances caramel and roasted malts with enticing Northwest hops. Perle and Willamette hops accent without overpowering this American brown ale’s intrepid maltiness. The result is uniquely delicious.

Inspired by the adventurous spirit readily found in Alaska, Kodiak Brown Ale invites you to take the road less traveled. Kodiak has remained one of our most popular beers since we first fired up the brew kettle in 1995, proving that Alaskans are not afraid of the dark.

Pair Kodiak Brown Ale with comfort foods—macaroni and cheese, lasagna, burritos; pub grub—burgers, nachos, deep-fried bites—and just about anything prepared on the grill. You can also just kick back and enjoy a tall cool one when you want to relax and enjoy LiFe.

3.5 Can. Hazy brown beer with a small beige head. Aroma is malty with notes caramel, bread, chocolate, herbs, hay and vanilla. Flavor is malty with notes of caramel, bread, chocolate, herbs, hay and vanilla. Very well balanced.
2.8 A decent, if unexceptional, brown ale. Smooth with caramel and nutty flavors. Hint of raisin. A little sweet for my taste, though true to style with assertive flavors. Not the best from Midnight Sun, but not bad.
2.9 Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. Pours brown to orange hazy with a nice beige head, aroma of fruits, rotten fruits, oxidation, flavor is bitter with fruits, over ripe fruits, chocolate, medium bodied.
3.6 Pours a finger of head on a brown body. The aroma is grainy with some caramel and nuts. The taste has a big chocolate and nutty flavors. Good balance. The texture is softer. An enjoyable brown ale.
3.4 Clear brown with a big tan head. Aroma malty and toasty, some toffee and fruit. Taste of burnt toast, and something hearty.. gravy maybe? Sounds gross but is actually good. Malty but not sweet. Can definitely see this going with shepherd’s pie. Quite nice.
2.8 "i like this brewer, but this one really doesn’t do much to seperate itself. fizzy light texture and body, with carmel malt, slight nuttiness and a splash of hops in the flavor and aroma. not bad, but not a standout."
3.4 Bottle shared at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Excellent Little Brother for the delivery! Murky brown, yellowish head. Nutmeg, a little dry, prune and figs and some more nuts in the nose. Tastes sweetish - more malty than bitter. Medium-to-full body, fairly carbonated, slightly nutty finish. Nice.
2.8 Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. Cloudy brown with a beige head. Aroma of malt, yeast, overripe fruits, a bit of cardboard notes, caramel, mild hops, a light nutty note and a toasty hint. Sweetish flavor, caramelly, fruity, with mild toast and a mildly bitter finish. Medium-bodied.
3.5 Deep amber/brown pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma is caramel malt and light chocolate. Flavor is light chocolate and some nice sweetness with some earthy hops. Medium body with a touch of fizz on the carbonation.
3.0 Light brown to be sure with a toast and nut aroma. Bready and light malt sweetness. Just OK.
3.4 Past notes. Bottle. Colour...amber-brown with a thin ecru head. Nose...rather malty with notes of biscuit and butterscotch. Palate...fairly frothy with Arrow biscuits up front and caramel notes mid palate. There’s just a titch of hops and then a goodly shot malt syrup before the quick dry finish.
3.4 Can. Brown colour. Sweet caramel aroma. Sweet, malty, nutty, caramel flavour.
3.6 Dark brown pour, off white head. Nose is chocolate malt. More sweet than Bitter. Middle is biscuits, molasses, and coco. Finish is light coffee and dark malt. Went great with a Gouda vintage 5 years.
3.2 Pretty good brown, got it in cans and you can definitely tell, perhaps it’s better in a bottle. Still like it though
3.4 Canned. Mahogany pour with cream colored head. Weird nutty aroma. Malts. Moderate hops. An ok brown
3.2 This is a dry brown ale, without a lot of malt flavor. It tastes mostly of brown bread, and there is a dash of floral sweetness in the aroma. Good.
3.4 Can:   Low malt and hop example, a little sweet, some very slight toasted malts.   Touch of honey and biscuit as well.   A little bready.   Decent balance, not a hoppy brown.   Moderate body and mouthfeel, albeit it does feel a bit smooth.   A little dry and chalky even.   Malty example if anything.   Decent, but a little boring.
3.0 Poured flat, no head, minimal carbonation at Humpy’s Airport outlet. Clear brown, dark but not opaque, Very nutty, very fruity, very sweet. Brown sugar, hazelnut, dates, toast, ripe fruit, more brown sugar. Mellow earthy hops, flavor lingers at the front on the palate. Despite a bad pour, a decent brown and a good pair for the crab cakes.
3.1 Draught. Pours a mostly clear dark brown color with a smallish tan head on it. Nose is a little nutty and has some nice toasting to it. Taste is drier and nuttier than I would have thought, with just a slight hint at some caramel.
3.3 Draft Old Notes (Humpy’s-ANC)-Pours a dark brown with a decent head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, nutty, and slight dried fruit. Taste of nuts, malt, and caramel. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and easy drinking. Nice brew.
3.5 Bottle. Deep brown color, bright tan head. Aroma of cafe au lait, chocolate milk. Taste is Italian chocolate soda, light spice. Decent.
1.8 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark reddish pour with thin white head, aroma brought notes of metallic, grass, slight cardboard, hints of earth, slight chocolate, nuts. Taste is cardboard, paper, slight grass, metal, hints of chocolate, hints of nuts, finishing bitter, slightly dry. Eh, bad.
3.5 Bottle. Newer label than that, though. Not sure where from, my parents picked it up for me on a recent Alaskan vacation. Pours a nice deep clear brown. Thin mouthfeel....light on the tongue. Heavy on the hazelnut, bigtime. Good beer for the style, but not a style I have often.
4.0 On tap. Pours brown with foamy beige head. Aroma is of bready malt and dark fruit. Body is medium, creamy and slightly crisp. Taste is of bready, nutty malt, herbal hops, brown sugar and dark fruit. Finish is medium lasting, semi-dry. Delicious Brown.
3.6 Pours a dark brown leaving some light amber edges, has a two finger white foamy head, moderate sticky lacing spider webs after a good minute, aroma is rugged roasty nutty maltiness, light caramel displays a decently strong presence, lightly hopped; the flavor is extremely roasty, perhaps one of the roastiest brown ales I’ve ever had - wow, dry finish, its fairly easy on the palate despite some harsh (rugged more or less) carbonation; overall, I say this is a pretty good brown ale that I would have again
4.5 This is one of my favorite brown ales. Thick and nutty with a nice amount of brown sugar sweetness and a roasted, malty base. Picked this up in Juneau in 2011.
3.6 The Sampler, Brooklyn 650ml ($8): Pours a ruby brown with a light brown head. Aroma is light chocolate, caramel malts, mellow hoppiness. Taste is slightly sweet. Mild hoppy undertone. Nice and creamy body. Nice, sessionable brown ale.
3.6 Draft. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted nutty malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex solid brew.
4.0 Aroma of grain and cola. Pours a cloudy brown with a robust tan head and medium lacing. The taste is malt forward and slighly sweet. Toasted malts, nuts, with hints of caramel. There is a nice slightly bitter finish. Medium-full body with medium carbonation. Overall, this is a well balanced and enjoyable beer that is very tasty.
3.3 bottle. Brown with small head. Mildly sweet with big malty backbone. Solid brown ale with no off notes.
