Midnight Sun Moscow

Midnight Sun Moscow

Alaska’s Most Wanted Series.

First brewed as part of our 2011 World Tour series, MOSCOW Rye Russian Imperial Stout is a hefty, opaque black liquid that pours slowly and soulfully into your snifter. A high percentage of spicy rye and roasted dark malts create a dense, chewy yet elegant winter wonderland of flavors. And from AK we say: Let it Snow…in Moscow.

4.1 Bomber. Great appearance, black with a well-formed brown head and nice lacing. Big amazing aroma of chocolate, roast, and port. Flavor is smooth, mildly sweet, with port and dark chocolate. Medium-full body, very smooth with soft carbonation. Nice brewski from up north!
4.1 Bottle [from trade with jtclockwork] @ home. Opaque pitch black color, nice moderately creamy medium to dark brown colored head that lasts for a long time and leaves fair to good lacing. Wow! What a start! Aroma is malts, lightly roast, a hint of dark chocolate, cedar wood, liquor. Taste malts, rye, lightly roasted malts, again (cedar?) wood, some alcohol lightly, lightly dark chocolate [I have to say though, nowhere near KBS which I am now comparing with, perhaps not justified but still, because I drank it last night], again liquor (some kind of whiskey?), a nice malt chocolate bitter and a good bitter finish. Medium body, medium carbonation. Very nice!
4.7 Beer #3 of my 5000 Beer Celebration (Imperial Stout): Super dark brown and literally black coloured body that looks like used motor oil after a few hundred thousand miles, all with a very dense, dark brown chocolate coloured head - about a centimetre tall, crazy deep and dark. Aroma of alcohol, roasted malt, yeast, rye, cedar, grain and a bit of chocolate - pungent throughout. Full-bodied; Super creamy and pungent malt backbone of rye, oatmeal, roasted malt all with a ridiculous amount of milk, vanilla, chocolate and raisins and a tremendous amount of sugars at the finish. Aftertaste is complex and deep with a lot of alcohol notes, some chocolate, a good dose of lactose and a creamy, ridiculously full-bodied vanilla and sugar sweetness. Overall, this feels like a milkshake almost due to the insane body, but with a very complex profile and a subdued depth from alcohol and sugars make this probably one of the best Imperial Stouts i’ve ever had, plus it’s from Alaska which makes it that much better. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon on 12-April-2015 for US$10,39 sampled at home in Washington a bit more than two years later, on 11-May-2015, sampled from my Midnight Sun tulipish glass straight from Anchorage.
3.1 Bottle: Thanks, Kevin. Oily black pour, soft tan foam that settles quickly. Aroma with light roasted malt, ash, licorice, burnt brown sugar, & a hint of papery oxidation. Charcoal on the palate with some ashy, burnt malts & light smoke. Anise, licorice, a touch of very bitter chocolate, modest oxidation lingering in the finish.
3.1 [ bottle ][ 1oz ][ @DC tasting ][ ? ][ mini tumbler ][ 02.15.15 ] heavy sepia, thin beige ring. Plum and cola sweetness in nose, light oxidation. Sweet front palate, heavy marshmallow, light roast and anise mid before sticky end, softly bitter finish.

4.0 With Zach, pours a pitch black pour with a nice Java head. Nose is rich chocolate malt, and licorice. Taste is sweet rich chocolate, and burnt coffee. Finish is smooth and velvety, and ends on the same delicious tasting notes, with a moderately long finish. Quaff Score 8 / 10
4.0 Bomber. Pours black with a dark brown head and strong aroma of roasted malt, rye, and chocolate. Taste is of rye, roasted malt, and alcohol with chocolate, dark fruit, and liquorice notes into the long finish.
4.2 22oz bottle. Poured like motor oil with an averaged sized brown head. Roasty, chocolate, vanilla, a bit smoky and I’m getting the spicy rye/rye bread in the aromas. Alcohol content hidden.
3.9 Very smoky with a lot of roast. Black pour with ok head and lacing. Light bittersweet finish. Thick cinsistency. Some dark chocolate. Pretty good. Bottle shared at tasting.

4.1 23/XII/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle from Healthy Spirits (CA, USA) @ home - BB: n/a, bottled: n/a (2014-1530) Thanks to Dieter A. for sharing the bottle! Pitch black beer, creamy beige to brown head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: caramel, mocha, sweet, sugary, some vanilla, dried fruits, some chocolate. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: pretty roasted, sweet touch, caramel, chocolate, dried fruits, mainly figs, mocha, cocoa powder. Aftertaste: coffee, mocha, dark chocolate, bit sugary, bitter hops.
4.3 Bottle. Pours inky black, medium creamy dark brown head, dissipates slowly, nice lacing. Aroma is roasty, dark roasted malts, chocolate, some anise, a bit of tobacco, molasses. Flavor is light sweet, medium bitter, roasty, dark chocolates and anise, woody tobacco notes. Perhaps some hints of rye, but not a strong component here. Lingering bitterness, but pleasant, not overpowering. Not very hot at all. Fullish body, creamy mouthfeel. One of the better non BA impy’s, IMO.
4.0 Bottle at Hamilton’s. Pours almost black with a creamy brown head. Tastes very smooth, like burnt toast, coffee, dark chocolate, booze, light ash. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet chocolate, dark coffee, roasted malt, burnt toast, alcohol.
4.1 Bottle at Hamilton’s. Pours opaque black with a medium, frothy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, coffee notes, earthy hops, prunes and figs. Flavor is dark malt dominant, dark fruits, medium hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
3.9 Very solid IS, with good rye kick in the finish. Thick black body, very drinkable. Top notch.
4.4 Bottle. Moderate toasted cereal and molasses for the malt, light to moderate resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with a hint of tar in the background. Head is small, frothy turning wispy, brown with good slippery lacing and good legs and is mostly diminishing. Color is just about black. Flavor starts lightly to oderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately bittersweet and lightly acidic. Palate is full, creamy, with a soft carbonation, and a chewy and sticky finish. Everything about this Imperial Stout is spot on, Bold in the right places and nothing offensive about it.
3.9 Spicy and fruity, yet dark roasted and bitter at the same time. Lots going on - a little abrasive, perhaps, but a good brew overall (if a bit expensive).
4.1 Khaki coloured head dark pour mild to medium carbonation aromas dark fruit rich chocolate caramel roast malt spicy note with the rye liquorice the flavours superb chocolate taste roast coffee rye sweetness caramel like the chocolate tasty wholesome goodness medium bitter more dried fruit good balance raisin a creamy note on the back palate rye works so well with the bitter the finish excellent imperial best tastes roasted sweet malts so good rye influence lasting bitter light creaminess spice touch well balanced classy imperial
3.7 Nice rich roasty imperial stout. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Aroma is toasty dark fruit and some caramel and chocolate. Taste is medium sweet with a bit of bitter roast. Good beer
3.9 Shared by Maek at the Craft Beer Picnic. An inky pitch black pour with a ruddy rusty head. 11% a bit boozy, very savoury with a bitter rich dark chocolate(80-90%cacao), slightly chalky taste , very rich, candied plums & pitted fruits with some roasty coffee notes. Quite complex. Wonderful. Boozy but good.
3.7 bomber, lots of rich flavors, very thick but the alcohol is well hidden, the rye isn’t noticable and couldnt really taste it, your typical above average stout
3.9 Pours a solid black with a tan head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of dark malt, toast, spicy rye, and some alcohol. The flavor is rich malt and some toast and coffee with a spicy eye finish over a heavy body.
4.1 22 oz bottle. Pours jet blac like a good Impy stout should. Forms a thick tan colored head and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Nose is dark chocolate, coffee, spice with a hint of bourbon? Taste is sweet first, chocolate, malt. Finishes with the perfect amount of bitterness. Full bodied, really creamy. Not much carbonation. Excellent! I could sip this all night.
4.1 Pitch black in color, thin tan head... Aroma of roasted malts, spicy rye malts, vanilla, bourbon, oak... Flavor is big roasted malts, notes of coffee, huge rye spices throughout and on finish.. Great beer
