4.1At a beer festival in Melbourne, Aus. Deep amber body with a fine beige head. Powerful aroma that lept from the glass. Seriously bitter....aggressively so. The length of flavour is impressive with many variants along the way. Lovely and challenging all at the same time.
4.0Clear brown colour, reddish hue, beige head. Malty aroma, wood and vanilla, caramel and subdued fruity hop notes. Madeira sweet flavour, malts, dark chocolate, caramel and coffee. Finish chocolate, coffee, light sour notes, caramel, and quite a bitter finish.
The hops bitterness seems to be quite mellowed by the barrel aging, but still a nice beer in it’s own right.
(From 37,5cL bottle @ RBBSG II, Wilrijk. Courtesy of beerdrifter -just found out his rb name-. Thanks Jeff!)
3.711/VIII/2012 75cl bottle @ RBBSG - (2012-909) Thanks to Beerdrifter for sharing the bottle!
Clear orange brown beer, creamy off-white to beige head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very pungeant fruitiness, sweet sugary, honey, sweet malts, caramel, bit dusty. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet malty and sugary start, quite some alcohol, little sour touch, some cow fodder, chocolate. Aftertaste: little bitter, sweet malts, honey, little smoky touch, dry hops.
4.0Thx. to Beerdrifter // 375 ml wrapped bottle sampled @ RBBSG 2012 // nice presentation // final 1000 version to try // murky copper amber, surprisingly dark, much darker than expected given the original one, very interesting, not much in the way of the head // nose is filled with a thick layer of malts, caramel, tad molasses, heavy on sweet malts, wood with a layer of pine hops buried underneath but the sweetness buries them. not hoppy // thick malts flavours, caramel, toffee, tad molasses, light bitter, pine resin buried underneath, rounded by wood, touches of bitter hops pupping up in the back, brown sugar with a touch of whiskey in the finish // softer carb. thicker body // surprisingly different from the original, original brew, interesting and yummy stuff
2.0750 cl bottle bought @ Mikkeller bar in Copenhagen. Bagged and corked. Usual impressive Mikkeller artwork abounds. Pours a dark maroon with no head or carbonation present. The aroma croaks "barleywine" not IPA. The beer is complex, too complex. So many flavors crowding together, fighting for dominance. My wife, who does not drink beer, but always gives it a whiff stated "That smells like booze, not an IPA". The beer was oily and heavy to my palate. High octane raisin notes were very present. I hate raisins but love Mikkeller. This is the first dud that I have experienced from these guys. Not my favorite.

Cloudy dark brown beer, tan head. Wet wood nose. Light dry palate, smooth. A brief hot of malt with a little milk chocolate. But that dies away quickly and gives way to dry woody herbs. It’s smooth and rich but where are the hops? Where is the bitterness? I don’t understand this beer!
4.0Wow, this is definitely different from everything I’ve tried before. Appearence it’s not incredibly impressive, just a clear dark brown colour with a small persistent white head.. I wouldn’t say this is close to an Imperial IPA, it’s most likely a mix of barley wine, Quadruppel and a hint of Imperial Stout...very complex. All the IBUs are masked behind a huge amount of roasted malts, so most people would expect a lot of bitterness, which is absent. What taste really is, it’s the following: malt (a lot), wood, and whisky. Hoppy notes are present as well, but nothing relevant. One must drink this forgetting about previous ideas, and will probably enjoy it a lot.
3.6Bottle thanks to bu11zeye.
Dark brown brew with lots of off-white head. Tons of wood and bourbon in the nose - some smoke and anise as well. Taste is pine and resin hops, brown sugar, and some smoke.
4.4AROMA: Big piney hops and malt with a wood -like note
APPEARANCE:very dark cloudy coppery colour .3/4" head of tan.Laces nicely
TASTE: Wow big barley wine-like malts with notes of dried fruit and brown sugar, as well as caramel, toffee, raisins, and of course hops. Aftertaste is of whisky , alcohol, and wood.
PALATE: big full bodied flavour with a bitter hop finish. Good carbonation for an IPA.
OVERALL: Wow, what a BEER!! this is an extremely complex, full flavoured beer that I don’t seem to have enough descriptors for. Very, very good beer, approaching a barley wine or an old English ale, but with big hops. Excellent.
Erbacea, l’alcool salta fuori poco dopo. Finale in bocca amarissimo.
3.1375, corked, baled, and papered. Pours a murky maroon with no head, lace, or legs. Possibly the most medicinal, phenolic nose on the planet. Not unpleasant, not completely anyway, but completely overpowered by a boatload of heavy whisky notes. Peppery wet wood notes over the top of everything. Sticky flat medium body. Wood, balsa wood, fresh cut wood, and oak predominate on the mid palate, along with iodine and heavy whisky notes. Dry, sticky, clinging, strange finish. Is this a BrewDog beer? No? Alright.
3.5375 ml bottle from ericandersnavy- thanks again, Eric! Pours a somewhat cloudy copper with no head. Aroma of caramel malts, wood, toasted sugar, dry leaves, and just a bit of ash. Flavor is big on charred wood, with sweet and caramel malts, tobacco, toasted brown sugar, and toffee. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a boozy, ashy mouthfeel. Very unusual.
4.037,5cl bottle. Pours a cloudy dark copper color with a huge beige head. Long lasting foam. Aroma is hoppy upfront with big woody roasty notes. Some molasses and alcohol too. Taste is bold and complex with resiny piney hops and wood, alcohol, ashes. Some alcoholic kick in the end. Mouthfeel is full and creamy with a soft carbonation. Overall, really nice and complex, but definitely not a classic DIPA.
3.8Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is pleasant with notes of alcohol and peated malt. The taste is far from a DIPA. More like a weird old ale/stout/belgian/DIPA crossover with a dash of whiskey. Sweet and sour but still plenty of hop bitterness and then some smoke from the whiskey barrels on top of that. Strange, but I like it.
3.2The bottle wrapped in paper looks really good. Beer in the glass quite dark, small head. Starts intense malty, not very hoppy, complex alcoholic, sharp. More and more dry. Finish warming, burning. Strange beer.
3.5Thanks to robinvboyer for this. Pours a dark ruby brown with a small off white top and good lacing. Aroma is a lot of whiskey, cherry and malt. Taste is big boozy, woody whiskey, burnt ash and I suppose some subtle hop bitterness. From a name like 1000 IBU, I was expecting some more DIPA characteristics, but this struck me more like a whiskey taster or a scotch ale. Disappointing.
3.8Head: thick, creamy, off white
Colour: dark red brown
Smell: peated, paint, booze, very earthy, nuts, chocolat, roasted malts, maybe a bit harsh when just popped open , but let it air a bit and it’s wonderfull ! , also bit sweet
Taste: start is oily, caramel, maple sirup, oak, very peaty, and toasted, bitter, herbs, anise, quite boozey with a alcohol burn on the tongue, end is sweet and dry , aftertaste is herbs, NICE ONE MIKKEL !!
3.7Bottle, It pours hazy dark brown with a small tan head.... the aroma is oak, dark fruits and caramel.... the flavor is oak, hops, sweet caramel and some barley.... whisky, hoppy finish..... medium body.....
3.3(375ml bottle best by 3/18/13 thanks to bu11zeye) opaque medium brown with thick dark tan head. Nose is very woody, cedar, leafy, some odd hop aromas as well. Taste of pine, caramel, resinous, woody, raw sugar, molasses, medium bitter and very sweet. Thick and oily body. I preferred the non-BA version of this.
4.0Bottle at home. Pours a clearish brown with loads of little floaties and an off-white head and lacings. Smells a bit of smoked whiskey malts and red wine. Sweet and quite bitter. Aromas of caramel, peated wiskey malts, and ash. Also some aclohol notes. And hints of leather. Smooth, medium to full bodied. Very soft carbonation. Long bitter finsh with more ashes and hints of leather.
4.0Bottle split with mcberko and manu[are not!]champions. Pours black with a red tinge, with no head. Aroma of syrup, candied brown sugar, whiskey, bourbon, leather and light wood. Flavour is syrupy, candied sugar, smoke, wood, more like a barley wine, licorice, dark fruits, with a hoppy after burn. Hugely complex. Not many IPA qualities left, full bodied, sweet woody finish, hops present also - but not at the forefront. A good beer.
3.3Hazy copper with an off white head. Citrus, smokey oak and vanilla aroma. Taste of smoke, oak, citrus and grapefruit. A little heavy on the oak and quite sticky and sweet. Dry hop finish.
4.0375mL bottle, split with manuchampions and Matts_Property, pours dark amber / brown with a small tan head. Aroma of whiskey, caramel, whiskey, slight hop character and more whiskey - which dominates the hops. Flavour of intense whiskey, quite high (and somewhat cloying) caramel sweetness - sort of like a barley wine; very woody, smoky and sweet. Hops are totally buried / barely noticeable. High complexity, with lots of sweetness and whiskey barrels to contrast on the finish. Nowhere near the normal 1000 IBU but a very enjoyable experiment. Excellent.
3.6Pours a nice dark amber colour with a thin head. aroma is resin hops and light alc. The flavour is resin hops and wood vanilla. actually isn’t that bitter for 1000 IBU
3.6Overall it’s still a nice beer but I was disappointed. The color was nice but the smell was too alcoholic, too much BA and a little winey. I really missed hops and bitterness in the smell and taste. Carbo and body were fine though it’s a slow drinker.
2.3pours a amber murky color. nose is strong like rubbing alcohol and burnt tire. flavor is nuts, again tire and a huge resin presence , not drinkable
3.037,5 cl bottle from Passione Birra. Expiration date: 22/03/2013, served into a snifter. Pours a caramel colour with brown and red highlights, with an extremely small tan-beige head. Some alchool legs. Nice resin hops aroma, some caramel, wood, wine barrels, leather, whisky and some alchool. Presence of caramel malts in the mouth, some woody characters and a slight booziness. Very light carbonation, creamy and in some way liquer texture. Not a big fan of this one.
