4.8Bottle. Lots of bourbon in the nose, kind of acidic notes. Taste full: loads of bourbon, dark sugar, coffee, chocolate
3.8A bourbon nose, but understated Bourbon in the taste. Roast, an interesting roast, chocolate, engine oil. Smooth, above average mouthfeel. Well integrated. Gelatin thickness.
4.0Aroma: The smell is fudge with nuts and vanilla, almond, but also some saw dust and alcohol.
Appearance: The beer is black, with a brown rather modest head, leaving little lacing. But good curtains.
Taste: The beer is sweet, dried fruits, figs and dates, some wood and bourbon character is noted, as well as a licorice nuance.
Palate: Medium carbonation, warm, oily and complex body.
Overall: A bit sweet, but a very lovely dessert beer (not really breakfast I dare say).
Note: Bottle - Tasted at a beer sampling at De Klomp, Linköping, Sweden. Reviewed 2010-09-04.
4.0March 9, 2012 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs & mabel. 500ml bottle c/o ("I am NOT dripping!"). Nearly opaque brown-black with a smallish creamy light brown head. Aroma - some sweet bourbon and dry oak in there, but thankfully it’s mostly a great imperial stout: dry, deep coffee/chocolate roast, alcohol, quite herbal, a bit lactic, not sweet or fruity at all (8+). Taste follows, terrific balance, it’s creamy and strong but not boozy - nutshell and tons of coffee, enough to shove the damned bourbon way into the background. Slightly thick and definitely creamy and frothy mouthfeel, lively but not sharply so, finishes deeply roasty with appropriate alcohol and bitterness - a fine example of how to do a restrained bourbon finish on a beer. Excellent stuff, although I prefer the "regular" version.
3.5Chocolate mint aroma. Sweet nose, mint chocolate flavor yields to a coffee finish.
3.0Bottle at Dan’s, pour courtesy of Aaron. Thanks Man! Pour is pitch black with a small brown head and decent lacing. Light chlorine, peat, smoke, pee water, light cocoa, and nail polish in the aroma. Taste is very peaty, bourbon, roast, espresso, mint chocolate chip, smoke, and dark chocolate. Sticky mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Somewhat offensive, but still drinkable. Not really my thing.
2.4Pour out of 750 mL bottle, thanks to Aaron for the pour! Thick black pour with nice tan head, aroma has notes of chlorine, hints of sour vinegar, hints of coffee, old sewer drainage, not good. Taste is a mix of sweet and minty earth, chocolate touch of bourbon, hints of earth, sewage. Not very good.
4.0Bottle @ Dan’s house, picked up at De Molen. Pours a deep brown/black appearance with a brown head that dissipates pretty quickly. Quite spicy, cardamom, light caramel, mild juicy whiskey, cookie aroma. Starts out a bit boring caramel/chocolate flavor and then explodes with whiskey, anise, chocolate, roasty malty deliciousness. I was a bit disappointed at first but it really turns into a delicious caramel/toffee/whiskey/chocolate goodness.
3.9Bottle. Pours a pitch black color with a tan head. Aroma is of bourbon, oak, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, oats and some charred oak notes. The flavor follows the nose, nice oak and bourbon flavor, some charred oak too, vanilla, dark caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt and oaty notes. The body is full with a creamy mouth feel. Overall a nice Stout, but the coffee as really faded over the years, I would have preferred it fresher.
4.1Black colour, tan head. Aroma of coffee, milk chocolate, roasted malts, honey, vanilla and light smoke. Sweet flavour, bitter coffee, dark chocolate, light hops coming through. Finish quite alcoholic, coffee and chocolate.
(From 50cL bottle @ RBBSG II, Wilrijk. Courtesy of Travlr. Thanks Gene!)
3.5Bottle @ Fairbar. Pours black, no head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, oak, whisky. Flavor of roasted malt, coffee, light oak, lots of bourbon, chocolate, mint. Full body, flat carbonation. 130510
3.611/VIII/2012 bomber bottle @ RBBSG - BB: n/a (2012-917) Thanks to Travlr for sharing the bottle!
Very dark brown beer, brownish creamy head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: pretty boozy, heavy caramel, sugar, touch of smoke, vanilla, mocha, some coffee. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: dark chocolate, some caramel, bit hoppy, coffee, peppery. Aftertaste: bitter hops, some vanilla, dry, cocoa powder, coffee.
4.2Thx. to Gene // 50 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBSG 2012 // 2009 Vintage // Red wax // black with a small mocha head // smells is crazy sweet, molasses, touch cola with some bourbon and milk chocolate // one sweet concoction of pure brown sugar, lots of coffee. molasses. bourbon, milk chocolate, mocha some bitterness, roast coming up in the finish // touch too thin and touch to carb. // not bad, prices are not easy on these things
4.1Poured from a waxed 500 mL bottle into a tulip. European version - 10.7% ABV. Batch 463.
The beer itself is a mahogany brown, nearly black. There is a walnut edge where just a little bit of light is able to push through. A mocha cap froths up on the initial pour and then fades to a small ring around the edge.
Sweet bourbon comes into the nose first, Although I am not sure exactly which whiskey was used, there is a strong sweet, spicy nature to the whiskey aroma to go along with the oak. Bitter coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of smoke are noticeable in the background.
The sweet, spicy whiskey flavor carries over from the nose. It steps in front of everything else at first. After a second the sweetness wears down, while the spicy flavors continue throughout the sip. Unsweetened dark chocolate, coffee grounds, and roasted malt comprise the flavor in the middle, and spicy whiskey and oak close out the flavor.
Bourbon Barrel Beer Geek Breakfast has a full body that is slightly cut by the whiskey and oak from the barrel. The carbonation is creamy and smooth; overall it has a fairly smooth consistency, although it is a little grainy as well.
The spicy whiskey on top of the base beer is a nice effect, and it is not too overstated. This is a very nice barrel aged beer.
3.3A-- Poured a dark, murky, brownish black. Settled black. One finger dark brown/ Mocha colored head. Faded to a light milk chocolate film. Good Head retention but no alcohol legs or lacing with this.
S-- Dairy milk chocolate, some oak, little bit of bourbon and some coffee. Alcohol is much more obvious in the nose and gives off a sort of nail polish smell.
T-- Dairy milk, coffee, oats, slight amounts of bourbon, oak and quite thin.
M-- Slick and finishes slightly acidic dry in the mouth. Do get notes of burnt tires in the mid palate. Barrel notes are pretty well reserved. Better feel than the nose and taste as the oats do help the beer along
O-- Stylistically correct but missing something. maybe that the body is thinner, or maybe the oats make too late a run in this. Just missing something that makes this more than a decent beer.
4.2Bottle sample @ 2nd RBBSG, August 11th 2012. Courtesy of Travlr.
4.3Sampled at RBBSG. Pitch black color, small light brown head. Smell malts, barrel-aged, some moccha and alcohol. Taste roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, moccha, bitter and alcohol. Full carbonation, full body.
3.8Black in color with light carbonation and a tan head. Light to moderate bourbon aroma. Notes of vanilla, oak, char, and roasted malt. Nice dark chocolate and molasses notes. Not that much coffee. Plenty of roast, charred oak, vanilla, and dark chocolate on the palate. Moderate coffee, light bourbon, and a mild molasses sweetness. Very good, one of the top Mikkeller beers I’ve had.
3.4A very generous birthday gift from drabmuh. You da man!
A: Pitch black with a dark tan head that shrinks to a thin crema and holds, leaving decent lacing.
S: In order of appearance: strong bourbon and alcohol, scorched malts, roasted malt, dark chocolates, coffee.
T: Right away, I can tell this beer is a sipper and best split a few ways. The bourbon is very forward. The malts taste more burned than they do roasted. While this is problematic, in and of itself, it also serves to overpower the coffee flavors I enjoy in Beer Geek Breakfast. Notes of wood are there, as well, adding another layer of complexity. I’m also finding a nice dark chocolate taste I like, as well. Overall, there are some good flavors to be found, but I believe that they are out of balance.
M: Palate coating, high alcohol presence, very rich.
D: A fun beer, and while I was very happy and thankful to have had it, I wouldn’t seek it out, knowing what I know now. Barrel aging doesn’t always mean better. I prefer the standard version of this brew.

3.8500 ml bottle - 2009 vintage. deep deep brown, almost pitch black. Marron head with grey hints, creamy yet very sticky. Aroma of bourbon, some booze, green paprica, burnt wood, roasted malt. Medium body with roasted impressions all over, while bitterness and sweetness is lingering the whole way through, bitterness is finally coming through in the finish. Taste of coffee, grapes, dark chocolate, and bourbon, slight vanilla.

Tasted on several occasions. Getting older, this beer tends to get more anice in the aroma, which is perhaps not intended by the brewers... and huge chunks of gelatine are formed as well.
3.9Pours unclear dark unclear coffee black in color with a dark creamy cinnamon mocha head. The aroma is quite smokey with a bit of sweet roasted malts. The flavor bring coffee and chocolate notes on a decently creamy body. The barrel has calmed down and there are no boozy notes, but definitely delicious.
3.5Poured a dark brown, almost black color, aromas of vanilla, roasted malt, cocoa, and some light dark fruit. Flavors are the same with some light ash and some nice thick chewiness to it.
3.5Bottled 500ml (Beer Hunters, batch #463, 220109/221014)
Pitch black color, small steady brown head. Toasted, whiskey aroma and light fudge & vanilla. Medium-bodied. Smooth palate. Lots of whiskey, some "whiskey fudge". Nothing to do with the original BGB - so much bourbon here. In the bottom of bottle nasty jam-like yeast.
3.9Bottle, poured a deep pitch black with coffee colored head. Small to medium lacing. Aromas of chocolate, caramel corn, bourbon, and licorice. Taste is cocoa, roasted grain, coffee bean, and vanilla bourb notes. Smooth mouth and not too hoppy or metalic. Very good Russian Imperial.
3.8[4327-20120309] 500mL bottle. Burnt band-aid roast aroma has a bit of candied fruit. Black red-hued body with a medium-lasting creamy brown head. Barrel wood roast malt flavour has a big long-lasting burnt aftertaste. Full body is huge and boozy. That’s a big bold boozy beer, but the booze is quite hidden. (8/3/7/4/16) 3.8
Overheard: "You’re dripping, Harry."

3.6Bottle [500ml] shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- c/o j&m. Bottle #742141. March 9. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a small frothy light-brown head. Slightly mild aroma of roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, dark fruit and of course, bourbon.Flavour of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, some bourbon and vanilla. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. Pretty good, the barrel-aging is subtle which I like.
4.0Bottle shared at The Kernel during my birthday celebration, London. Pours black-brown with a crazy strong, beige foam head - you could eat the head with a spoon. Vanilla in the nose with some herbal notes, mint, roasty cocoa. Medium to big sweet flavor, restrained roastiness, warming bourbon, coffee, some dark fruits and jammy fruits. Full bodied with chewy and creamy carbonation. Warm finish, mildly drying with some dark coffee, dark fruits and fruitcake, some scorched earth, mild smoke, booze, roasted malts, peat, cocoa. Not bad. The level of complexity is pretty immense.
4.0Bottle at breakfast time, thanks to Leighton during his birthday celebrations. It pours jet black, with a massive tan head. The nose is vanilla, bourbon, wood, roasted malt, caramel, spice, Christmas cake, booze, nougat and marzipan. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, meat, coffee, caramel, oak, vanilla, dark fruit, spice, booze, ash, treacle, burnt toffee, marshmallow and marzipan, with a slightly sweet finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and viscous mouth-feel. Lots going on here, but not quite as good as the regular version.
4.02012-03-09. Black body with a small foamy brown head that looks a bit like chocolate milk. 3+ Mild aroma, sweet dark malt, light roast and mild barrel and bourbon character. 7+ Flavour is similar, dry roast, rich dark malt, sweet core, lingering mild roast and coffee like bitterness. 7+ Smooth medium to full bodied palate. Rich fairly straightforward imperial stout, and the barrel aging is surprisingly mellow. The alcohol presence is VERY restrained. Pretty solid. Enjoyable. Bottle via trade with Savvy 1982, approximately six months old
4.1Aroma a bourbon, café, malta torrefacta y chocolate. Negra de giste beige. Sabe a bourbon, madera y café.
