I got this in a trade with rustydiamond. Thanks Rusty!
It pours from foiled, caged and corked 12.7oz bottle(cork say 14/08/11) a clear deep amber with a 1 finger head of foam. Lots of lacing here and the head retention is better than average for the style.
The smell is malty foremost followed by some fruit and some slight bitterness.
The taste is huge. Lots of caramel malt starts things off but from there, I get an infusion of hops, mostly citrus, and a big kick of alcohol. Wheww...this is a mighty powerful brew and all of the 12%abv seems to be right there, in your face...err...mouth. Lots of warming to be had here so I'm only going to take *very* small sips.
A few sips later and the malt seems to have taken a sweeter route and taking on a more English style BW personna and that's a good thing in my book but the alcohol is kind of ruining it for me. And just when I say that, the bitterness from the hops kicks it up a notch again...weird how the flavours seem to change for me from sip to sip.
It's going to be tough for me to rate this beer but one thing I know for sure, in its curent state, it's certainly not all that drinkable for me but I *am* glad I got to try it.
4.4Bottle from K&L in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is caramel, buttery toffee. Taste is creamy caramel, some Belgian quad vibes, mild spice. Overall not especially stylized but extremely classic and drinkable. Pretty flawless bottle, label and liquid.
3.3375 ml bottle. Pours a hazy mahogany color with moderate head that settles quickly. Aromas of sulphury dried dark fruit/raisins, tobacco, caramel, and toasted malts. Flavors of candi sugar, grass, alcohol, raisins, and more toasted malts. Od mix. Expecting more...
3.6Heavy malty aroma - mostly caramel and candy like notes. Some dark fruits. Hoppy profile is on moderate level - mostly flowery and slightly herbal notes, which are quite annoying. Taste is very sweet - stable and long. ABV is extremely well hidden here, highly drinkable. Medium to full body, syrupy, soft to moderate carbonation, finish is sweet and hoppy. In overall classic ABW, but in my opinion that hoppy profile should be more balanced with sweet maltiness and sometimes it plays the main role here.
4.0Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Karmel, melasa, ciemne owoce, curkowa przypalanka, rozgrzewający alkohol.
3.637,5cl Bottle @ 2D2Dspuma Tienda, Barcelona, Spain.
Brown colour with a thin white head.
Aroma is malt, sweet, molasses, dried fruits, toffee.
Taste is malt, molasses, raisins, vanilla, biscuit, alcohol.
Medium body, soft carbonation.
2.7From notes. Enjoyed at the 4th Annual Barleywine Tasting at Nicole’s house on January 28. 375 mL bottle. The pour is a light amber color with a thin white ring of head and no lace as it falls. The aroma is just not that great. There is a huge bitter bomb. Thin hot hops with a light caramel and a hint of fruitiness before a huge alcohol comes rolling in. I understand this is a wheat wine, but this is a mess. The flavor is just as rough. The alcohol dominates and the bitter hop takes a narrow second. The caramel and dark fruit are just blips on this one. The mouth feel is painfully watery and light with a sharper carbonation and a lingeringly bitter finish. No thanks.
3.2At the Barleywine event. Aroma is sweet, booze, candy, hops, banana? Appearance is light amber, light tan head, clear. Taste is booze, banana, coffee, hops, robust, booze, so hoppy, sweet, weird. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, booze bomb. Overall, weird.
3.5Rami Rami is drinking a Big Worse by MikkellerIntensywne, suszone owoce, karmel, zywice, ziolowosc, morele, kandyzowane jakies sprawy. W smaku podobnie ale mniej slodko. Tylko jedna[...]

3.82013 on draft at brew brothers in Galveston. This is a malt bomb! Sweet. Malty intense.
4.1Big white head. Sweet aroma: Licorice, red fruits, dried plums, caramel, some hops Very intensive. Taste is very sweet but not tiring because of high bitterness. There are caramel, malts, fruits, hops. Body is full, extremaly oily. Low carbonation. Fantastic beer!
Albo inaczej, staromodne. Kiedyś może i robiło wrażenie. Teraz robię meh.
4.80,375l bottle. Very thick hazy dark brown colour with long lasting tan head. Aroma: Very rich, rasin notes first, caramel, nuts (especially almond when the beer gets a bit warmer), redcurrant. Not harsh, sophisticated. Taste: Oh yeah. Sweet and very rich in malts, thick syrup like drink. Than the high alcohol shows up with some tarty caracter (redcurrant) but just for a few seconds before the full pleasent bitter mouthfeel rules the feel. (almond) Than the sweet dessert like caracter comes again and it’s well balanced with the bitter tone. This is what I call a complex beer. Very thick and creamy the texture. Full body with almost no carbonation at all. Long dry and bitter finish (with the almond tone in the taste). Amazing beer for celebration times.
4.037.5cl shared bottle at home from Only Good Beer, Budapest. Nose is fruity, liquorish, dried fruits. Body is hazy deep red rusty brown, head is medium, beige, creamy, average lasting, excellent lacing. Aroma is dried fruits, caramel, milk chocolate. Medium to heavy sweet, medium bitter, medium fruity sour. Finish is long lasting hoppy medium bitters, light fruity sour. Full body, oily slightly sticky texture, soft carbonation. Bit heavy, tasty fruity hoppy, well balanced, nice one.
3.8caramel, roasty, toast, herbs, brown, hazy, tan foam, heavy cloying sweetness, medium bitterness, full body, sticky, soft carbonation, long finish,
4.1Bottle at hopaholic. Deep copper almost brown colour small white lacing. Nose is citrussy molasses. Taste is light bitterness, dried fruity molasses. Nice dried fruity barleywine.
4.2Pours brown with a thin cream head and light lacing. Malty aroma with notes of fruity and piney hops. Taste feels caramel malts, booze, pine, resin, biscuit. Dry finish. Well balanced barley wine, full bodied and tasty. Good.
3.8BB backlog, Bottle shared with and care of Mike. Pours a brown color with a very tiny head and light lacing. Nose is candy sugar, pine, toast, fig, and caramel. Flavor is molasses pop, belgian fruit, hops, cherries, and sweet malt. Medium to fuller mouthfeel. Nice barley wine
4.1Piana żółta, obfita i całkiem trwała. Barwa miedziano mahoniowa, opalizująca. Aromat średnio intensywny, słodki, likierowy - jest cukier kandyzowany, skórka pomarańczowa, keks, karmel, syrop klonowy, akacja, żywica... W smaku podobnie, dość słodkie, obok suszonych i kandyzowanych owoców, likieru i miodu jest wyraźna goryczka, iglaki, zest z grejpfruta. W posmaku lekka pikantność. Niskie wysycenie, oleista faktura, alkoholowe rozgrzewanie.
Mal wieder.
3.412%ABV. Barleywine.
Poured out brown and rusty. 28ºSRM.
Nose is sweet ripe citrus. Fresh ripe valencia oranges. Alcoholic on the nose.
Mouthfeel is syrupy. Palate is sweet with candy, malt sugar, waffles with maple syrup. Hops are bitter, herbaceous.
Finish is medium bitter and with that residual sweetness of honey or syrup.
3.1Pours a murky burgundy with minimal head. Aroma is a sweet malty mess. Notes of raisin, prune and toffee. Flavor is also extremely sweet with notes of toffee, raisin and dark fruit. Medium body. Oily texture. Soft carbonation. Dry finish. At 11 bucks a bottle and from Mikkeller was expecting so much more.
3.1Sampled from 0.375 l bottle. Clear, dark amber with a white layer. Sweetish, malty, slightly oxidized and a bit boozy aroma of molasses, caramel, raisins and vanilla. Sweetish, quite malty and slightly oxidized taste of caramel, molasses, some coffee, a touch of raisins and some vanilla, followed by a long, slightly bitter, rather warming-alcoholic finish. Medium to full body, slightly oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay, but very disappointing.
2.1Malzig pappiger Geruch. Keine Karbonisierung. Wässrig getreidig malziger Antrunk. Erkennbarer Alkohol. Kurzzeitig würzig, dann wieder wässrig. Belanglos. 7/8/7/6/9/6
3.4Shared 12.7 oz. bottle poured to a snifter showing a hazed, mahogany color, with a modest layer of bubbly, tan foam, with both foamy & leggy spots on the glass. The nose was alcohol at the ready, dried fruit, chocolate, caramel sweetness, and subtle spice. Medium bodied, the taste was similar, with added notes of treacle, noticeable alcohol, some earthy bitterness, and carbonation that was low enough to flatten out the texture to a syrupy finish. Kind of dragged the total experience down.
3.9Ambrata carica o tonaca di frate chiara, velata, schiuma beige di ottima persistenza.
Aroma agrumato, erbaceo, foglie di tè, biscottata, arancia candita, zucchero di canna.
Al palato nocciola, caramello, biscotto, scorza d’arancia, finale amaro erbaceo, tè, frumento e caffè tostato.
Corpo pieno, poco carbonata.
3.7(375ml bottle sample @ VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Sep 1 2016) Pours fairly clear pale reddish-brown with a huge pile of off white head. Aroma of burnt sugar, toasted grains, nuts, sweet darker malts, touches of dark fruit and citrus, bittering hops. Flavour is reasonably sweet but counteracted by rather hefty bitterness, toasted grains and toffee, candied orange, a bit of dark fruit, slight breadiness to the malt, nuttiness. Finish is rather dry and bitter with more toasted grain, some bittering hops, slight citrus peel, a bit of alcohol heat. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Quite decent barley wine, nothing really stuck out for me though.
Fortfarande beska kvar i avslutningen. Åldern på ölen märks av tydligt, med en typisk mer matt smakbild som går djupare och låter smakerna ligga kvar längre. Med andra ord har det gjort den väl.
3.5Bottle 37,5, a copper amber beer with medium creamy head. Nose is on barley sugar, grain, almond, blond caramel. Aroma is on toasted grain, sugar, toasted caramel, orange, bit monodimensional, light chocolate. Unfortunately very less interesting that the big worst worser !
