2.0from Erzbierschof - black beer with no foam left; roasted aroma of chocolate, marzipan, mushrooms and soja sauce; pretty woody; no carbonation; sticky and very sweet; full-bodied, earthy and woody roasted finish with a solid presence of alcohol, umami and mushrooms - quite ugly in fact ...
3.9Bottle shared by esp0r with me, Simonsen & Edvard, september 28th 2013. Blac body, small tanned head. Aroma of roasted malt, licorice, vanilla, wood. Taste of strong coffee, bourbon, toffee, dark chocolate, with red fruits at the finish, nice roasted fruit aftertaste with notes of alcohol.
3.812.7 ounce bottle purchased from Ledger’s Liquors about 3 years ago. Has been refigerated ever since. The aroma on this is very pleasant with plenty of chocolate sweetness, bourbon, and some woodiness. A little vanilla extract, too. Quaffable. Opaque essentially black body present with a medium, tan head present. Fair lacing after all these years. Starts with a velvety, sweet-ish chocolate flavor. Lowly carbonated. Becomes rather woody and kind of dry in the middle. Bourbon shines through nicely. Finishes with a little warming finish. For being such a big beer, this seems to be a bit light bodied and a little thin and flat. It’s nice stuff, but seems to be lacing the layers of complexity I would like.
3.9Backlog. Tried on tap at the Copenhagen Beer Festival. An immense stout truly worthy of it’s name. One of the better out there. Not sure if the barrels really contributed anything significant to the brew.
3.2Bottle. 13.1%. Best before 18.03.14. Pours almost black with a small, quickly disappearing greyish-brown head. No lacing. Aroma is sweet, bordering molasses, with dark fruits, and is a bit oxidized. Remote sweet liquorice note in the background. Flavour is tart, with dark fruits, a bit oxidized, and has a cold coffee feel to it (without an actual coffee note). Somewhat wine-like. Tart, roasted, dark fruit finish with a cold coffee/tobacco note and an alcohol burn. Overall so-so. The aroma is rather good, but the flavour doesn’t really hold up; too tart/sour, and the cold coffee note feels misplaced. I wrote the same about the Red wine edition; this one is marginally better though. 04.01.14.
4.2Black colour, no head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, oak, chocolate, coffee, earth, leather, tobacco, liquorice. Taste is medium bitter, light sweet a lot of coffee flavour, dry finish. Medium body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation. Interesting.
3.9On tap at Biercab. Black colour with brown head. Roasted, chocolate, fresh hoppy aroma, some bourbon. Roasted, chocolate and sweet bourbon taste, some hoppiness and bitterness. Full body.
3.9Bottle bb. 09/05/15. Pours black with a partly lasting brown frothy head. Aroma is bourbon, roasted malt, chocolate, wood, dark sugars, licorice and ash. Taste is heavy sweet, bitter and light+ acidic. Body is medium, texture is creamy, carbonation is soft+. Finishes dry and boozy with lingering bitter and astringent roasted notes.
3.6Bottle thanks to mora2000...Pour is black with a thin white head...Nose is nice chocolate, bourbon, honey, sweetness, soft, vanilla...Taste is chocolate, spice, bourbon, vanilla, oak, sweetness, honey, dry..
4.3bottle bought at de molen. poured pitch black with a small brown head. the smell reminds me a lot to the regular black version. chocolate, bourbon booze, barrel smell, vanilla, some tabacco, the abv is verry noticeable. all the flavours are perfect together. verry complex beer. would love to try the other versions.
3.9375ml bottle with BB date of 18/03/14 Very low carbonation with no lacing. Winey-coffee flavour dominates with vanilla and bourbon coming along after. Kahlua like finish.
3.8Bottle at home, from De Molen shop, 02/11/13.
Pitch black with a good sized dirty tan covering that retains well.
Nose is roast malt, bitter dark chocolate, woody bourbon notes, earthy, light coffe waft.
Taste comprises dark chocolate, light spice, good bourbon hit, boozed soaked wood, sugars but not overly sweet for a 13%er.
Full bodied, soft carbonation, warming alcohol in the finale.
Solid BA impy, carries a good level of depth throughout and doesn’t get too hot or cloying.
3.8Bottled. Pours pitch black with a large tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, wood, coffee notes and bourbon. Sweet flavor that ends up with some alcohol. medium to full bodied, oily text. and soft carb. An enjoyableimpy. indeed.
3.9A: Dark Opaque Hue, Passes No Light, Brown Head, Minimal Lacing
S: Bourbon, Coffee, Honey
T: Coffee, Bourbon, Vanilla
M: Decent Carbonation, Full Bodied, Boozy
Overall, a decent barrel aged stout but the bourbon is very powerful and almost over powering as it gets warmer.
3.7Bottle shared with Simonsen, edvard & daje
Black, tanned head. Smells of bourbon, toffee, vanilla, roast and malts. Heavy sweet, coffee, bourbon, oak, moderate bitter. Quite nice but not all that complex, strange mouthfeel. Nice bourbon barrelled beer
4.3(bottle 06/10-2013) medium brown head, black color, roasted bourbon aroma, soft co2, full body, smooth taste, slightly warm taste. BB date 09/05/2015.
4.1Sample at the "Far Out! Space-themed beer tasting" on 10/01/2013. This beer pours a glazzy onyx color with a medium thick beige head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, dark chocolate and roasted malt. The finish is roasty with an oaky vanilla and bourbon aftertaste. Good all around.
4.0Looks.. Black pour with sml-med tan head. Smells..roasty and heavy malts, dar choc, rich coffee and bourbon. Tastes..rich choc, coffee, malts dominate with some bourbon and a hint of a salty soy liquorish kinda flavour. Bourbon barrel again at end. Good
3.7Flaske fra esp0r. Drukket på hytta til dag. Svart farge. Beige skumrand. Lav karbonert. Mørkbrent malt, kaffe, lakris. God men mangler fylde
3.6Corked 37.5 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with some sediment and a tiny tan head that leaves no lacing. Aroma is dark fruits, booze, vanilla, and chocolate. Flavour is much like the aroma – with some warming alcohol and a bitter finish.
4.4(bottle - corked & caged 375 ml - 2010 vintage) Dark black pour with a very thin tan head and very mild carbonation. Huge roasted malt aroma with a dark fruit backbone and a woody twinge to it as well. Flavor is a big mixture of coffee, licorice, vanilla, wood and a big bourbon sweetness. Not as sweet as I thought it would be and the alcohol is well hidden. Delicious and thick.
4.0Bottle. This is a really big beer with lots of wood and alcohol in the mix. I like this a little more than the scotch barrel aged. I think the sweetness of the bourbon helped.
4.9WOW!! This is a BIG BEER!!! Robust, full bodied stout! This is what I expected from Mikeller. Coffee, licorice, beer, and bourbon flavors explode in the mouth... Small, tan head. (Oct 2012)
4.2375ml bottle at BrewDog,Birmingham 18th march, shared with Roberto.Good looking black pour with smallish stable tan head.First aromas of roast malt and bourbon followed by chocolate and caramel, also a little vanilla presenting itself upon warming.Bourbon and roast malt flavour with dark fruit, oak and alcohol making up the mix in this very tasty stout which we both agreed was a cracker.
4.3Bottle from brewdog.com. Flavours are dark chocolate with a mousse like texture. Stunning
4.0Bottle. Pours pitch black with barely any (brown) head. Aroma is roasty and licorice, hints of wood. Flavor is spicy, roasty, bitter with some malt and hops.

3.9375ml bottle (CWAF2013, Fri)
Black and glassy. Lovely vanilla-ey bourbon aroma, sugary dark roast too. Slick palate, very full. Shows its strength. Chock-full of bourbon in the taste too. Very sweet burnt roast too, but, hedonistically, the small sample I had pressed my buttons. Don’t know if I could put up with any quantity of it though.
3.8Bottle @ home. Pitch black beer with no head. Smells bourbon, whisky, wood, roasty, dark chocolate, tar. Tastes sweet, bourbon, wood, dark chocolate.. Amazing taste, but it has a little bit too much of the bourbon taste. Feels quite heavy alcoholic, full body, silky, soft carbo.
