4.1 Sample at the "Far Out! Space-themed beer tasting" on 10/01/2013. Opaque brown-black pour with a medium foamy beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of rum, coffee and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of sweet rum, espresso and charred malt. The finish is somewhat boozy with a rum-infused coffee aftertaste. Good overall.
4.2 Pitch black color with no head. Aroma of dark chocolate, molasses, rum pralines, coffee, booze, vanilla. Taste is light sweet, medium bitter and a bit sour. Medium body, creamy texture, flat carbonation. Really good and interesting Imperial Stout
3.8 Bottle. Pours a deep dark black with a short brown head. Aroma of chocolate, rum, coffee and vanilla. Flavor of roasted coffee, chocolate, rum, molasses, oaky vanilla a bit of honey and booze with a solid warming alcohol finish
3.5 Graham cracker in the nose. Or is it cardboard? Must be the rum Barrel? Decent beer but if I traded for it I dont think I would be to happy. Roasted malts and alcohol I presuume? Not that impressed.
3.7 Bottle: Pours with a pitch black body and a tan head. Lacing is precnt. Nose of coffee, vanilla, dark fruit and roasted malt . Flavor of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and wood among with alcohol. Full bodied, oily texture and soft CO2. Dry, alcoholic and slightly bitter finish. I like the origional version better. ★★★★
3.6 Strong coffee, oak and rum aroma. Dark brown, almost black. No head to speak of. Sour rum mixed with bitter oaky touches. Very good and warming.
3.9 You can smell this is the rum edition. Lots of heavy aroma. Sugary rum taste, with hops and roasted malt. High alcohol taste. A sipper. Great stuff!
2.2 In short: A lifeless mess of booze and sweetness. Not good How: Bottle 375ml, foiled & carged & corged. Consumed when probably over 1 year of age The look: Black body topped by a tiny tan ring of foam In long: nose has a lot of booze (light nail polish sensation) with cacao and burnt brown sugar. Taste is a sweet slimy black liquorice, a shot of dark Sambuca, lots of awkward oak & tannins, cocoa powder, soy sauce, tar, a lot of booze. I know this is a very strong beer but I found the alcohol particularly aggressive in this one, much more so than in the Red Wine version that has the same alcohol content. Minimal carbonation, lifeless body. The oak barrels are very upfront but I don’t think I could have guessed Rum barrels in a blind tasting. Not sure what to say here, I love the base beer and I liked the Red Wine barrel aged version, but this Rum edition really didn’t do it to me. Weird. I’m pretty fucking pissed off I paid $15 for a 375ml of this crap … ok … let’s calm down … so the beer was expensive and not good at all, but I think that using the using the “f” word in a rating may be overreacting… that and my broken living-room window and my TV set smashed in my driveway.
3.8 Name: Black Hole, Rum Date: July 01, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting, First Sunday Appearance: black, scant head Aroma: big roasted aroma, sweet chocolate, light fruityness Flavor: rich roasted flavor, sweet fruity rum, touch of oak, bitter dark chocolate, rum sweetness brings out a rich sweet chocolate in the finish Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 8/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 16/20 Rating: 3.8/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: *** /4
3.7 Corked bottle. Pours a pitch black color with a thin tan head. Aroma is of rum, molasses, lots of dark fruits, some booze, vanilla, dark sugary notes, coffee, roasted malt and oak. The flavor follows the nose but is rather thin due to the lack of carbonation, I get some rum, lots of molasses and dark fruits, booze, vanilla, dark sugary, oak, roasted malt and coffee. The body is on the lighter side of medium, with a silky, yet almost watery mouth feel because of the lack of carbonation. Overall a pretty good Imperial Stout, but would have been better with a little carbonation.
3.5 Bottle corked and caged, poured a dark black color with little carbonation, aromas of rum, chocolate, lighht coffee and a touchh of dark fruit. Flavors are the same with some ash thorwn in.
4.6 Bottle from beerplanet.eu. Almost dark color with no head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, rum, raisins, molasses, wood. Taste, roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, honey, rum, wood. Coffee bitter finish. Awesome imperial stout.
3.6 Thanks to my brother for sending me this bottle. This is the final beer in the Black Hole series that I needed to try. The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate and roasted malt, with hints of rum and oak mixed in. The flavor is heavier on the rum, with the barrel aged notes of oak and maple thrown in. I also get a nice amount of roasted malt and molasses. The beer is fairly sweet overall and the alcohol is nicely hidden. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.7 375 ml bottle I am so glad that this was not a full bottle or there is no way I would have been able to finish it. So thick and rich that even half is as filling as several slices of cheesecake it is a better barrel treatment than the white wine. Aroma / Appearance - Deep oily black fluid seeps down the glass. It almost oozes rather than pouring. Flat with almost no head (no surprise there) it traps the chocolate, plum, anise, and vanilla effectively. The rum lingers in the background with more modesty than some other barrel aged imperial stouts. Flavor / Palate - The oily texture coats the tongue and begins to dull the senses immediately. Before they wear out completely a complex line of chocolate, plums, rum cake, and vanilla build layers of flavor. The warmth actually restrains itself for a while; even so I would not want to follow it up with another big bold imperial stout.
2.6 Bottle. What a freaking mess this was. Black pour with soapy bubbles and not a lick of head. Flat as shit. Nose of coffee, soy sauce, vanilla, and more coffee. Taste follows the nose. I mixed a little with a BB winter warmer I was drinking at the time as well. Just to add some carbonation. It made it a little better.
3.8 Bottle. Oily black pour with a few soapy bubbles hanging around. The aroma had big roasted notes to the point where it is almost ashy, rum barrel, vanilla, honey and coffee. The flavor has a sweetness early from the honey and vanilla, molasses and rum barrel hit next followed by the coffee and a strong ash component. Although I know this is big, I’m a bit surprised that there is not more alcohol burn.
4.0 head: none Colour: black Smell: coffee, booze, roasted coffee, roasted bread, chocolat, awesome !! Taste: start is cold coffee, herbs, bit of booze, some oregano, rosemary, touch of anise, end is bone dry chocolat with earthy mouthstinging bitterness , cool !
3.8 Chocolate aroma with light rum notes. Black in color with tan head. Moderate chocolate; the rum is noticable but nice. Notes: Borefts fest
4.1 Pours black with a beige head. Sweet with some dryness. Aromas of dark chocolates, toasted malts and vanilla. Dark fruits. Also aromas of prunes. Lots of wood as it ages in the glass. Full bodied. Medium to soft carbonation.
2.4 Pours pitch blk w/ zero head. This is thin and lacks any carbonation. Very sweet, but if you don’t mind the rum imparts a pretty nice flavor. Unfortunately cherry coke has a nice flavor profile too, but I don’t want to drink it flat.
1.9 After really enjoying the regular Black Hole, I thought that a rum barrel-aged version would be interesting. It was not. It was hardly even drinkable. Super hot and sweet on the nose and then cloying and digusting on the palate. This is a small bottle, but I didn’t even make it all the way through. Drain pour.
4.2 Wow, I love the aroma, the coffee, vanilla, honey rum is all there. Pous a very dark brown colour with a small bubbly head which quickly dies down, tastes great, I tasted it out of the fridge then left it nearly an hour, and the taste got better! Very powerful taste with a lot going on, overall a great beer indeed!
3.8 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a reddish black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted and produced fair lacing. Medium to heavy toasted malt, rum and chocolate aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy complex toasted sweet rum flavor with a medium to heavy toasted sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex good brew.
3.7 Bottle from 2010. Pours black with slight head that I coaxed out. Nose is slight sour with boozy overtones. First sip is sweet almost sherry like but vanilla and burnt sugar. Finish is cherries with black strap molasses. Mouth feel was not bad for such a flat looking beer.
3.5 Bottle. Black pour, almost zero head. Chocolate, molasses, rum, some sweet fruit, and heavy roast (like burnt bitterness). Decent, better then some of the other black hole treatments.
3.8 Tasted on 12/6/11 from a corked and caged 375mL bottle purchased at West Lakeview Liquors. Pours an opaque oily black with thin, brown, bubbly lace that recedes further, to thin spotty lace. The nose is primarily dark chocolate and vanilla, with underlying espresso, molasses, some char, and a lightly honeyed aroma. The flavor is more vanilla, brown sugar, and honeyed sweetness up front, moving to the molasses, dark chocolate, espresso, and ashy flavors, which are all very dry. The body is full and oily, almost syrupy, with light carbonation, and a very long vanilla, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and bitter espresso finish.
3.0 375 bottle served in a tulip. Pour is oily onyx without any head, despite a vigorous pour. Nose is, oddly enough, tequila, wood, raisins, prunes, and astringent alcohol. Taste is a very flat chocolate covered raisin with a thin mouth feel. Boozes and flat beer linger to comprise the finish. I don’t know if I got a bad bottle or what, but this was close to swill in my book. My rating doesn’t quite do it accuracy, but that is because there are some nice attempts at flavor. This is my first unhappy experience with Mikkeller.
4.3 Bottle from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Drunk on deck crossing the Irish Sea to Dublin. Black looks, with a creamy brown head. Dark choc ahoy in the nose with roast, dark fruit and rum notes. A similar tale in the taste which had notes of vanilla, booze and coffee also. Full bodied, smooth and very drinkable. The warming finish showcased the rum aging very well . As a rum lover this was right up my street and seemed the perfect drink to sip on the high seas. Top notch stuff.
3.9 375cl bottle shared with friends. Very thin off white head. Very deep amber pour. Great
4.0 Black body, no head. Sweet aroma of licorice, coffee, alcohol, roasted malts. Syrupy palate with no carbonation. Wood, vanilla, ash, rum, some coffee in the flavour. Great.
