4.1Holdbar 05/15
Looks. Black, viscous, small tan head.
Smells. Dark choc, coffee, roasted, burnt with the fruity boozy wine barrel.
Tastes. Loads of the wine barrel, vinous fruity-ness, then dark roasty choc and coffee, oak and alcohol and lasting liquorish-ness.
4.0Bottle shared by esp0r with me, Simonsen & Edvard, september 28th 2013. Black body with a brown head. Vinous aroma with roasted malt, chocolate, oak. Slightly sour wine taste balanced with licorice, roasted malt, vanilla. Quite nice. Body feels a bit thinner than other versions.
3.612.7 ounce bottle purchased at Ledger’s about 3 years ago or so. The aroma has a rather metallic character present. Light wine-like grape notes. Light roast. Not much else. Not even close to being as enjoyable as the bourbon version. Opaque black body with a medium light tan head present. Good lacing, too. Start is thin, and very vinous. Plenty of white wine character in this. Becomes a little chocolate and roasty in the middle. Finishes with a bit of an astringency. A little thin, but an interesting beer. Overpriced.

Smag: sød. malt, kakao ristet frugtig, malt. kaffe en god varme til sidst, meget sød til slut.
3.9Keg at Brewdog bar, Edinburgh, shared with Ashton McCobb. Pours black with a small beige head. Aromas of light sourness, roast, chocolate and coffee. White wine a bit of a clash. Comes together better on the taste though, more chocolate and wine barrel. Fave of the three. (30/08/11)
4.1Duft av kaffe, lalris, sjokolade og vanilje. Sort av farge. Lite skum, litt langs kant. Nydelig smak av sjokoladr, lakris, kaffe, vanilje. Frisk og god.
4.2375mL bottle. Flavor goes on and on, lots of depth. Wine comes in the finish, followed by tons of chocolate, followed by dates. Thick, warming, silky mouthfeel.
4.2375ml bottle @Cimmeria, Oviedo. Shared with angel77. Pours black with some tan head. Some head retention and lacing. Sour, roasty, wood, coffee and liquor aromas. Medium body, soft carbonation, silky texture. Taste is wood, roasty, raisins, coffee, some acid noets due to white whine. Silky palate from honey?. Amazingly well balanced and enjoyable. Alcohol well integrated, noticeable at the end.
4.2Beaucoup de chocolat et d’anis en arôme avec une finale tannique très sèche teinté de vin blanc. L’alcool est très bien camoufflé.
4.0Bottle shared with Simonsen, edvard & daje
Black, big white head. Smells of white wine, oak, roast, coffee and malts. Heavy sweet, some wine acids, roast, coffe and oak. Moderate bitter. The wine acids works very well with the heavy roasty body. I like this one quite a bit
4.1Flaske fra esp0r. Drukket på hytta til dag. Svart farge. Beige skumrand. Lav karbonert. Hvitvin,Mørkbrent malt, kaffe, lakris.
3.637.5 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with some sediment and a tan head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma is liquorice, citrus, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and white wine. Flavour is much like the aroma – with a bitter finish.
3.513th January 2013
Opaque black beer, good tan head. Light chocolate nose. Palate is semi dry and slightly soft. Rich but dry dark chocolate. A touch of aniseed alcohol but no real heat. Subtle white wine tang leads to a dry finish with the chocolate becoming woody. All right.
3.1too carbonation, slight sour note, not really good this white wine version in my opinion!
3.912.7 ounce bottle. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that fizzed away quickly. There’s a small amount of lacing. The brew smells like chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, honey, and a bit of white wine. Luckily the barrel character comes out stronger in the taste. It tastes like roasted malt, white wine, vanilla, honey, chocolate and some light coffee and dark fruit. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s slick but also seems a bit thin to me. Low/moderate carbonation. I liked this brew, but it’s pricey at $12.99 a bottle.
4.0As good as the regular black hole but with citrus notes and aromas from the wine. incredible beer.
4.0On tap at the Holy Grale, Louisville, KY.
Black pour with a sticky looking tan head. Lots of lace on the glass.
Full, sticky mouthfeel. Some astringency from the wine barrel.
Roasty malt nose with a vinous undercurrent from the wine.
Roasty malt, alcohol, raisins. An astringent finish almost like that found in grape skins.
Very rich, very satisfying. Definitely a strain on the palate. Tasting side by side by side with the peat whisky and tequila expressions.
3.6Bottle from BrewDog website. This is an inky black beer with a creamy tan head. It has sweet red fruit and liquorice flavours, vanilla, whisky and white wine? notes, a creamy mouthfeel with a warming fruity finish.
4.0375 ml bottle, pours black with a light brown head. The aroma is pretty complex, with chocolate, caramel, apples, white wine grapes all coming together and just about balancing, the balance between the malts and the bittering hops is great and this makes the white wine’s job a bit easier. Palate is fairly thick but very drinkable and the finish is dry and well balanced.
4.213-APR-2013, bottle @home, from Mikkeller & Friends Bottleshop.
Black with a high brown head.
Aroma is sweet roast wood, a little tart, coffee.
Taste the same. With alcohol, sweet roast, wood, and more and more white wine as it warms. Also more roast. Very full body and medium carbonation. Fine stout. The white wine barrels do add something but not in your face like some of the others.
4.1375ml bottle at BrewDog,Birmingham.26th march.Good looking black pour with a smallish sized stable tan head.Heady aromas of roast malt, coffee, booze, chocolate and a little wood.Dark roast fruit and malt flavour with chocolate and coffee too.Alcohol also in evidence with some vanilla and wood.White wine was only really hinted at both in flavour and aroma.Very tasty enjoyable stout.
3.8Bottle split with IGT at BD Camden, 19/03/13.
Dark black with a frothy tan head that eventually dissipates to edgeing and a swirl. On initial pour this looks the bollocks!
Nose carries dark roasted malts, wood, booze, chocolate, whiff of coconut, molasses, sugars.
Taste comprises dark fruits, raisens, dark malt, grapes, chocolate, booze, wood, ash, tar.
Full bodied with fine carbonation lending towards a dry boozey finish.
This ticks most boxes although falls short of being a great for me!
3.7I like you, Betty.
-- It’s Danny, sir.
Danny. Danny, I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen; all you have to do is get in touch with it. Stop thinking...let things happen...and be...the ball.
3.9Bottld. Pours with a pitch black body and a large, tan head. Nose of dark fruit, roasted malt , coffee, chocolate, roasted, malt , wood and liqourice notes. Sweet flavor withva slightly bitter finish and alcohol notes. Oily texture, full bodied and soft CO2. An excellent impy.
4.2A - Dark brown-black with a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. Fades at a normal pace.
S - Dark chocolate and dark caramel malts, roasted coffee, molasses, black licorice, oak, vanilla, white wine, some dark fruit, and some booze.
T - Dark chocolate and sweet dark caramel malts, roasted coffee, black licorice, molasses, oak, white wine, vanilla, and some dark fruit, some citrus and pine hops and a bit of bitterness, and some booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a warming and sweet finish.
D - Nicely balanced big imperial Stout. Nice body and mouthfeel. White wine adds some nice depth and complexity.
4.2That great looking wide mouth green glass 37.5cl bottle pours with a nice and pitch black body that supports a two inch tall mocha colored head of foam. I’ve forgotten just how tremendous this beer looks. The aroma offers up lots of inviting toffee and then coconut and white wine before a faint spicy oak like tartness is noticed. The taste is rich creamy and complex and similar to the nose. I get toffee and chocolate and dark roasted malts and some light caramel notes mixing with semi tart wine notes that lean more and more toward a white wine like tartness into the finish. Great balance, complexity and the white wine and oak play well against the roastiness.
3.5Very dark with great tan head and lacing. Bit of sour smell and taste some chocolate and alcohol.
2.9Taste alcohol and coffee and something sour. Smell is like the taste. Sipping beer. Don't like initially but it grows on you. Better warm.
