3.8 Tap@AIBF2014. Pours almost pitch black with a huge beige head. Lots of blended whiskey aromas with hints of good espresso. And a lot of other stuff. Very heavy and very rich. The alcohol in the aroma makes it hard to detect other stuff, but I’m certain there is a lot there.
3.9 My Bottom Line: Roasted cocoa, vanilla and coffee somehow transform into whisky and alcohol warmth before leaving room for rising hop resins and their bitterness. Further Personal Perceptions: -A creamy sheet of foam tops the pitch black. -This is beautifully coherent aromatically speaking. -The nose is more endearing than the flavor profile to me. -It’s rather amazing how the rich malts seem to give way nearly entirely to the whisky apport in the second half of each sip. Bottle.
4.0 Tap@aibf14. Black, huge tan head (crappy co2 regulator..). Sweet malty, slight honey roasted oaky, soy sauce, salt licorice etcetc nose. The list could go on forever. As with the normal blacks. This has a sort of a honey whiskey oaky edge to it. Which is nice at first, but glad to have just a 5cl sample,a bottle would be all too much.real nice, complex, abundance of flavours. Should probably have ended the festival with this. -- bb
4.0 A deep dark brown imperial stout with a thin brown head, lacing. In aroma, beautiful fruity chocolate malt with nice vanilla, milk notes, light alcohol warmth, whiskey barrel. In mouth, a nice sweet amaretto, chocolate, coffee, with strong whiskey final, alcohol warmth, beautiful. Merci Martin.
4.2 Kolsvart med stort mörkbrunt skum. Doftar kaffe, choklad och whisky! Fyllig och lite söt men endå besk! Mycket whisky och kaffe i smaken! Även rödvin/dessertvin! Vintage 2009
4.2 Bottle @ Home. BB 05.07.19. 2009 vintage. Pitch black, small tan head, some lacing. Good coating. Aroma, roasted malts, coffee, alcohol, oak, sweet, vanilla, whisky. Taste, roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, molasses, oak, coffee, liquorice, alcohol. Dry mouth feel, with a lot of wood.
4.1 37.5 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with a little sediment and a dark tan head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. Aroma and flavour are roasted, almost burnt, malt, chocolate, vanilla, and whiskey - with warming alcohol and bitterness in the finish.
4.1 Rating #3400. Bottle 37,5 from Henrik thanks. A dark beer with medium brown head. Nose is intense on dark chocolate, coffee and fig. Aroma is very sweet, lot of dark chocolate, complex rich, quite hopy, very roasted, lot of mocha. Finish is very roasted, lot of dark chocolate and dark coffee with very long aftertaste, quite bitter finish.
4.0 Bottle 37,5 cl. Pours black in color with a brown head. Whiskey, vanilla, some coffee and chocolate in aroma. Feels quite smooth. Roasted, dark burnt malty notes, licorice and chocolate in taste. A bit of boozy warming in aftertaste. But on the whole feels like quite a nice winter sipper.
4.1 375ml bottle from Kamiel. Didn’t really realize what I was opening when I popped this one so needless to say it was a lengthy sipper at 17.5% and no one to share it with. Jet black with a dense and creamy light brown head that mostly fades to a thin film and a nice ring around the glass. Has to warm up to open up and remove all metallic notes - at this point there is a light rubbing alcohol aroma, anise, some oak, whiskey, bit of vanilla bean remains and perhaps some pear or red apples that try to make it through everything else but only impart a nuance. Mild carbonation and a full body, the alcohol is somewhat muted (compared to the aroma) on the palate and although its sweet and boozy its not overwhelming which is surprising; coats your mouth in a viscous slightly hot film, booze and a chewy maltiness on the finish. Tasty but I recommend sharing this one!
4.3 Bottle. Creamy light brown good mostly lasting head. Black colour. Heavy malty and light hoppy aroma. Some whisky notes. Heavy bitter fantastic roasted flavor. Exstreamly long dry roasted finish. Creamy palate. Fantastic beer.
4.3 Bottle. Nice creamy head with excellent duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are rich roast malt, chocolate, wood, whisky and has a nice roasty finish. Nice.
3.8 How: Bottle. Where: SBWF 2013. Appearance: Black colour with a small brown head. Aroma: Roasted malt, caramel, wood, dried fruit, alcohol. Body: Medium body, low carbonation. Flavour: Alcohol, caramel, dried fruit, burned malt. Alcohol finish.
4.4 Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: I had the opportunity to try this beer some years ago at Borefts, but instead of drinking only Mikkeller beer, I decided to taste more different beers and along some others I forgot this one. Luckily I found this beer (again) at either De Molen or De Bierkoning. And I also got a bottle in the mail from Papsø... Thanks all for excisting (not forgetting Mikkeller) and letting me buy and receive a bottle of which I can taste or better, close to nipping this Imperial Nectar. Already an aroma and taste which you say Imperial too with the capital I! I am so happy the carbonation is so low. I have to admit a bottle with wax looks just a bit more luxerous and expensive, but it’s a crime to open these. The cap just bended a little bit and I could here a little shhh... Luckily even with a quick reaction of trying to open the bottle, the carbonation was so low that a gusher never could have been. The pour is pitch black which causes a pitch black beer to appear in my glass with a medium to just a bit bigger sized brown (!) vast and slowly changing foamy head. Beautiful! This beer needs to breath a bit and it gets a lot better than when you just open the beer. A complex aroma tickles the nostrils: there is a certain amount of whisky that covers a subtle but complex mix of wood, vanilla, some peat and oak. There is a present touch of brown sugars, deep roasted presentation and dark chocolate with some coffee and coffee roast. The alcohol causes to detect a pinch of spices. The flavour is round, complex, thick and absolutely flavourfull: dark roasted tones (coffee, barley malts, hay and wood), brown and caramelised sugars, , wood, chalk, bark and oak, there is dark chocolate and dark thick liquorice, liquor ish, oily, spices, sticky, bitter, even a sweet touch. Did I cover all? No, not at all, there is more and I might forget some; coffee, earth, espresso, some creamy milk and coffee, malts, peppers, alcohol burn but gentle, lingering bitterness, light nutty, some sweet tar tones, some coal and a light ash tint, some molasses and roasted wood sprinkle to cover all... Cover all? Covers thus far I think it can cover all... Pfff tasty and complex! Aftertaste has a variety of flavours: bitter, spicy, chocolate, dark roast bitters, some sugars, light sticky, whiskey and liquor, light earthy touch and a thick malty backbone. Far from boring! The carbonation is as the label mentions low, the mouthfeel is thick, oily and spicy, the body is full, very full (!) and the texture is thick, oily and sticky. A hell of an interesting beer, deep, dark, thick, complex, awesome! Even though you might be scared by the ABV this beer carries, it is it worth to drink this at least once in your life!
3.9 Bottled. Poured deep brown with a well-retained dark tan head. The aroma picked up toasted and nearly-burnt soy sauce, licorice, and other brown malts with accents of peppery whiskey, vanilla bean, and a kiss of rye.. some honey or similar sweetness also supported and helped boost the boozage.. warm and surprisingly well balanced. The flavor found burnt soy sauce, licorice, and coffee at the core with more delicately toasted brown malts, pine resin, and peppery alcohol around.. whiskey showed up more toward the finish, and rounded it out well.. some oxidation back there too.. overall very tasty. Heavy-bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. balance was especially good considering the alcohol.. I really enjoyed it.
5.0 375-ml bottle with white frosting won in raffle @ wlvliquors. never available for retail in the US. shared at b2k at chilam balam. full bodied, pitch black, touch of alcohol. couldn’t be better.
Pregnant smak, karakterfull.
3.5 Had this on several occasions, always in bottle 375ml white wax. Pours pitch black with nice steady creamy dark beige head. Quite overwhelming aroma of chocolate, some coffee, but lots of alcohol. Huge body with lots of sweetness balanced by roasty notes, quite bitter end and lots of alcohol glow all the way throug, low carbonation. Taste is toffee, some whisky. Good beer, but the alcohol too prominently in the foreground.
3.5 Bottle bought at Barleywine summer 2011 enjoyed at home Pours pitch black with a thin brown head. Smells of oak, chocolate, whisky, some booze, vanilla and caramel. Heavy sweet, hints of peat, quite malty, caramel and chocolate, alot of oak and booze. The barrell aging really rule this beer. Moderate bitter. Too high abv and too sweet for my liking. A beer in the extreme end of the scale
3.5 Bottle, 2nd Tuesday Tasting @ De Molen. Black colour, medium brown head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee, light whisky, maybe a hint of tobacco. Flavour is roasted malts, quite sweet, coffee, whisky and fairly alcoholic. Finish has a fairly strong alcohol burn. This is for slow sipping.
4.4 375 ml bottle from czar ; shared with him and albatross. Pours pitch black with a resilient beige head. Aroma is burnt caramel, whiskey, sweet chocolate. Flavor is tons of dark chocolate, whiskey, lots of wood, brazilian coffee, and a touch of booze. Finish is extremely bitter (although it does compensate quite well for all the sugar), dark chocolate, pitch black coffee, burnt mowed herbs. Lingering flavor of coffee, burnt grains, alcohol, but mostly coffee. Very much full bodied, you’re welcome, sticky mouthfeel, weak carbonation. We’re talking about some solid sh*t here, gentlemen.
3.9 Bottle at the De Molen second Tuesday tasting, April 2013. Poured a deep crude oil black colour with an oily consistency and a thin tan head. The aroma is rich, with red fruits and lots of alcohol. The flavour is very intense with lots of bitter alcohol, liquorice and fruit. It’s a hugely rich beer and has one of the most complex flavours I’ve ever tasted. The bitterness lingers for quite some time in the aftertaste, just to let you know it’s still there. It’s a huge man mountain of a beer!
3.8 Bottle shared at Denk’s monthly tasting at De Molen. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma of tar, earth, roasted malts, licorice, light molasses, dark chocolate, light coffee, leather, tobacco and caramel. There’s a lot going on here. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate bitter, with a massive sweet alcohol warmth (almost burn) in the finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
4.1 Sample at the molen monthly beer tasting. Thick tan head. Clear black pour. Smooth taste but noticeable alcohol. Lovely
3.9 375ml bottle, with a white wax neck, deep pitch black color, with a bubbly tan head, light yeasty, whiskyish liquor, mochaish, chocolatey nose, with a mild earthy roasted, black, chocolate, toasted malt, brownie note, and with some burnt fruitcake, burnt dried raisin, date, fig, dark bitter chocolate, burnt bran muffin, black coffee accents in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate, with a strong warmth boozy, yeasty chocolatey brownie, sweet burnt dark dried fruit, black coffee, flowery leafy, minty, grassy hop, light whisky barrel character, with some chocolate cake, molasses, dark bitter chocolate baking bar, burnt toast, burnt bran muffin, chocolate cup filled with whisky liqueur flavours, with a chocolate mint bar, mint leafiness undertone, leading towards a warming, yeasty, roasty, black maltiness, black coffee, burnt dark dried fruitiness, molasses, chocolate cake, black coffee, burnt toast, lingering leafy, grassy, minty hop bitterness finish.
4.2 375ml bottle thanks to fred82, BB 2019. pours very dark brown with a surprisingly nice moka head, good retention considering abv. dark burnt molasses and demerara, peat, smoke, subtle oakiness, saltiness, exploding umami esters, underlying nuttiness, caramelized, burnt and smoked nuts. full body - sticky, oily. sweetness for sure but it is backed by bold resinous hops for a medium long bittering coffee and smoky finish. decent drinkability considering abv and sugars - abv well hidden too. enjoyed it, even though i was scared of this one (splitted in three parts, of course!)
4.7 375 ml. bottle. Bottled on 15/07/2009. Mmm… this is not white wax that is on the bottle but plastic… Pours black – obviously – with surprising amount of mocha head – okay stability considering the ABV. Bottle says that the carbonation level is medium which is I assume an euphemism for flat. Good quality alcohol dominates in the nose, enjoyable thick licorice, black chocolate, rich but alcohol is foremost and of exceptional quality. Velvety rich, thick licorice in the taste, light ash, strong roast, pitch black chocolate, fine spirit is far more in the back and tuned down, still warming and alcoholic, overripe dark fruits marinated in fine spirit, light ashes,… Velvety, very, very slick, little carbonation. I am still amazed just how much better the BA Black’s are than the original.
4.3 Pours black , brown foam Smell is boozy , hint of oaty Low but sharp carbo Taste reminds very much of black , but more complex . I get some extra sweetness too . Alcoholic aftertaste . very bozzy but very nice
3.9 Bottled. Pours pitch black with a medium sized tan head. Leaving a fair lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, figs, wood, vanilla, whiskey and licorice notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry and with an alcohol burn. Full bodied, oily text and soft CO2. A very nice impy. ★★★★
3.8 Bottle @ home. Black body with a large brown head. Aroma is carcoal, smoke, wood, alcohol, roasted malt, whisky. The first sip was pure alcohol, it becomes better though, caramel, smoke, tobacco, roasted malt, oak, whisky.
