Mikkeller Crooked Moon Tattoo dIPA

Mikkeller Crooked Moon Tattoo dIPA

In Mikkeller we have over the years done many collaboration brews. However, the last one we did was a little unusual – we collaborated with the Swedish tattoo studio Crooked Moon.

The two brothers Jacob and Jonas Pedersen that run Crooked Moon Tattoo in Helsingborg wanted to celebrate their tattoo studio’s first birthday with a big party, and what could be more natural than to do it with a beer in their own name?

The two brothers have designed the labels for this beer. And therefore this beer comes with two different labels. One by of Jacob, and the other by Jonas.

The beer is just like a Crooked Moon tattoo: strong and powerful. In this case we are talking about a violently hoppy double IPA with 9% alcohol.

You’ll find Crooked Moon / Mikkeller DIPA find on draft and bottled.

The picture show the two labels – Jacob’s label design to the left and of course then, Jonas’ to the right.En dobbelt india pale ale.

Ingredienser: vand, malt, (pilsner, pale), humle (amarillo, citra, nelson sauvin, simcoe, sorachi ace), og alegær.

3.7 Keg at the mikkeller bar Berlin mitte. A translucent golden orange coloured pour with a a lasting off white head. Aroma is alcohol, apple brandy, carmel, woody, Bourbon,. Flavour is composed of semi sweet tangy, apricot, apple brandy, oak, light caramel, pine. Solvent. Palate is medium bodied, alcohol, grainy, tanin, moderate carbonation. Interesting.
3.8 Aroma: Medium aroma of malts, caramel, wood, vanilla, fruit, hops and citrus. Appearance: 4 Turbid/opaque golden/amber beer with a slight off-white head. Taste/Palate: 8/4 Starts medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel, wood, vanilla and fruit; ends slightly bitter and dry with hops and citrus. Overall: 17 This beer is intense, complex and balanced. There is some wood and vanilla shining through and I really have no idea why. Maybe the guys did not clean their tap thoroughly enough? Great fruit flavours and a decent bitter finish thanks to the hops. Great appearance and palate as well, but the aroma could have been stronger.
3.8 330ml bottle at home. Pours a hazy orange amber with some head. Very intriguing and spicy aroma. Lots of tropical fruit, orange, lemon, booze, resin, hops. Nice balance of intense tropical and citrus fruit with herbal and spicy hoppiness. Taste is very bitter, medium sweet, caramel and with a pronounced malt base. Fruity, though not as pronounced as in aroma. Finishes herbal and earthy, resiny side of the hops shows off here. Finishes a tad sugary and boozy too. Nice double IPA, flavour could be a tad more fruity or juicy for my liking but could be due to it being a tad old.
3.7 Pours cloudy yellow. Aroma is hoppy, fruity, intense. Taste is hoppy, balanced, fruity.
3.5 Fantastic IIPA. Lots of hoppy experience, with a sweet well balanced body. Don´t fear the high ABV.
4.1 Aroma: fruity sweetness with oranges and grape fruits and some dusty notes. Flavour: Bitter grape and other citrus fruits with a dry bitter finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and lightly alcoholic warm.
3.1 Cloudy orange with a frothy head. Mango, passion fruit and lemon aroma. Taste of malt, caramel, mango, lemon and whiskey.
3.6 Jól sikerült Imperial IPA. Eros, még sem alkoholos. Süteményes felhangokkal. (Elso Mikkeller csapfoglalás alkalmával a Jónásban, csapról).
3.4 Awesome deep cloudy orange beer with nice head on top leaving beautiful lacing to the sides of the glass. Aroma has sweet tropical fruits, citrus fruits, cantaloupe melon. Taste is really bitter with grapefruit and grass hops, maybe too much alcohol and ABV for this beer. Fullish body and medium carbonation.
3.8 One of several DIPAs made for Crooked Moon, a Swedish tattoo studio apparently, with label designed by either of the two brothers running this business. Can from Bierhalle Deconinck. Medium thick, egg-white, very densely moussy head, dissolving in the middle to a pattern of thin, diffuse ’islands’ but clinging tightly to the edge of the glass; lightly hazy orangey blonde robe with salmon pinkish tinge. Aroma of fresh blood orange juice, pomelo, pink grapefruit flesh, biscuit, sweet red onions (the Simcoe, I guess), whisky, some onsetting cooked chicken-like oxidation already, rambutan, guava, Chardonnay wine (the Nelson Sauvin?), olive oil, papaja, raw turnips, chicken spices, pink peppercorns, cedar essential oil, faint hints of fresh dill (likely the Sorachi Ace), bread crumbs and juniper berries. Sweetish fruity onset, lots of ripe mango juice, lychee, guava and orange flesh, surrounded by a soft gooseberry-ish sourishness, softly carbonated with a smooth, thick, oily mouthfeel. Rounded caramelly malt sweet middle, biscuity, lush and ’fat’, with increasing hop bitterness on top, penetrating the malt sweetness thoroughly, releasing a lot of retronasal grapefruit, orange juice, guava, lime, sweet onion and lightly piney notes as well as delivering adequate yet not overly harsh, spicy, grapefruity and refreshing bitterness; some warming, brandy-like alcohol ensues after that, but manages to avoid too much astringency in only gently heating up the throat without destructing the play of maltiness and hoppiness. Lush, rich, very aromatic DIPA, had it a tad too old probably as I can imagine this being even more refreshing in aroma when young, but still holding strong, with the combination of thick biscuity malt sweetness and brandy-like alcohol almost becoming reminiscent of an IIPA rather than a DIPA (though it is admittedly difficult - if not impossible - to make a strict distinction between both). Recommended for hopheads, and good advertizing for a tattoo studio trying to connect with the current hipster craft beer culture. Exemplary for what it intends to be, certainly.
4.2 Pours cloudy orange, with a big frothy head, some sediments and nice sticky lacing. Aroma of strong mango, passion fruit and citrus. Tastes fruity and moderately bitter, intense flavours of ale malts, caramel, mango, passion fruit, orange peel and some booze. Medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, long finish. Rich DIPA, full of flavours. Excellent!
3.8 can at home. Has an interesting flavour which I can’t put my finger on. I enjoy mikkeller beers this one not so. it’s a very different DIPA that I’ve had before
3.0 33 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense but very pleasant aromas of tropical fruits, fruits, grapefruit, maybe mango or passion fruit, citrus. No hints of alcohol in the nose. Appearance: quite deep golden to light amber color with medium hazyness. Perfectly white head with very high thickness, very high retention, medium Brussels’ lacing and creamy texture, made of big sized bubbles. Taste: low to medium sweetness, medium bitterness, low sourness. Flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruits, resin, pine. Some toasted/caramel malt overtones in the background. Balance is on the hop bitterness side with some malt sweetness as counterpart. Bitterness is quite high but not harsh nor unpleasant. Alcohol level is very well hidden, it’s not noticeable in the flavor nor in its warming effect. Palate: medium body, oily-silky texture, low to medium carbonation, long dry bitter finish (medium bitterness) of grapefruit, tropical fruits, pine, resin. Overall: excellent appearance. Not very intense aromas but quite good aromas and flavors of tropical fruits, grapefruit, fruits, resin, pine. Quite bitter but no harshness nor astringency nor too much bitterness. Quite refreshing and drinkable. Good. Not the best IPA (or DIIPA) i’ve tasted so far, but definitely a good one.
3.5 Aroma: Cereal and mango. Appearance: Gold/ambar color with hazy liquid and white frothy head. Taste: Medium bitterness with a medium sour touch. Palate: Medium body with i texture and soft/flat carbonation. Long bitter finish. Overall: All season beer, refreshing for summer and strong for winter. It leaves a strong memory.
4.2 Keg BD Edinburgh. Pours caramel /orange, lacy off white head. Big soapy, pine, mushroom, ripe mango aroma. Big boozy, mouth filling pine, tropical fruit taste, really complex. Tart and sweet. The flavors open up as it warms. Excellent.
3.8 Keg at brewdog Edinburgh. Pours deep orange, nose is grapefruit, lemon, soapy, taste is juicy citrus, dry, sweet.
4.1 Draft at Julian’s Providence. Pours golden with a white head. Leaves trace lacing in the glass. Huge grapefruit on the nose. Lots of grapefruit and a slight biscuit thing on the tongue. Lots of bitterness on the finish. Really nice IPA from the master of extreme beer.
3.5 33 cl. bottle. A hazy orange coloured beer with a white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, fruit, hops, tropical fruits, grapefruit and citrus.
2.4 I think I got an old bottle. Hops taste oxidized. Aroma didn’t seem too bad. But the flavor is way off.
3.5 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Ładny balans, dość wysoka słodowość, intensywny ananas.
3.4 750 ml. bottle bb 19/01/18. Foggy orange pour has some turbulent bubbling action and an enduring disc of foam. Nose is orange toffee, bread and a bit of booze. Tastes of orange baby aspirin, toasted bread, caramel liqueur and a faded hop, reedy grass/wooden finish. Medium-plus body with low-medium carbonation and a decent balance. Just not much hop pop here, tastes more like a slightly hopped-up doppelbock.
3.8 Bottle. Golden hazy to orange color, huge white head, sediment. Aroma of citrus hops, grapefruits and mango with herbs and pines. Taste is malty, light caramel, tropical and herbal notes, grapefruits, orange peel and pines. Long hoppy finish
3.6 Old school IPA. Sticky, sweet malt boy with some big citrus an pine hops. Gets a bit too much, but half pint measure would be enjoyable.
3.7 330ml bottle. Pours an unclear orange-gold with lots of sediment floating around and a large, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, peach, orange, tangerine, apricot, mango and pine. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, white wine, tropical fruit, peach, orange peel, yeast and pine with a dry, mildly bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty, the high ABV is well hidden.
3.3 pours unclear medium dark brown, orange red tint, with a frothy and creamy beige head, nice lacing. pine, brown sugar, belgian yeast, roasted dark fruits - thick prune juice, burnt raspberries, piney alcohol, lots of spices - mostly licorice. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily; unbalanced sweet and assertive spicy-grapefruity finish. a sweet boozy piney dark belgian ipa. nah..
3.7 Tap at hopnrolla days. Semidark orange colour with stable head off. aroma of tropical fruits, alcohol. Taste of tropical fruits, pine, hoppy, Huge bitter finish.
3.2 750ml bottle. Pours a hazed orange with a thick white head. Aroma is tropical fruit hops and medium malt presence. Flavor is bitter with mild fruitiness. Below average carbonation and miid booze.
3.8 Long lacing head. Fruity aroma, a bit of alcohol tho. Fruity, mango, sweet and bitter in the same time, some pine, alcohol aftertaste, a bit too harsh, but well ballanced.
