3.7 Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell, London during the Birthday Celebration of Jack & Leighton - I hauled 1.5L sucker all the way from the Netherlands, so I hope you fellas enjoyed it! Pours clearish, red-brown with a fine, creamy beige head. Aged malts and caramel on the nose, some pine, dry bread. Medium to big sweet flavor, quite bitter with lots of earth and spicy, dry pine, some dry toffee. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with toasty bread, dry pine and dry caramel. Good one.
3.9 Thanks to Graincru, a surprise ending to our tasting. Bottle 662/1300. Burnt amber appearance, Caramel spice’s and blackberry aroma’s. Soft carbonation with a dry finish. A perfect way to end the afternoon.
3.6 Bottle - big thanks to Leighton at Jack and his very own birthday pleasantries, 13/04/13. #730/1300. Hazed dark mahogony brown with a decent sized beige head that retains well. Nose carries dark malt tones, dates, brown sugars, dark fruits, woody notes, boozey - a little on the harsh side. Taste comprises dark toffee, brown sugars, earthy woodyness, more booze - again a little harsh, nutty tones, booze drenched sponge and biscuit base. Full bodied, dry in the finish. Ok but a little overy boozey.
3.7 Big magnum bottle, supplied by Mr. Smith. The pour’s deep rusty red with a massive off white head. It was a real work out pouring this heavy bottle, even for a jacked bro such as myself. The nose is marzipan, toasted nut. Pecan pie. Red berry fruit leather. Ribbon candy sweetness. The taste is more rich berry. Big toffee malt profile. Hints of tart sweetness in the finish. Pretty mellow for 10%. Full body, fine carbonation. Overall, pretty good.
3.8 Bottle shared by Leighton at his and Jack’s birthday celebrations. It pours deep mahogany brown with a thick beige head. The nose is varnish, pine, resin, sweet fruit, brown bread, baked goods and some spice. The taste is wood, leather, varnish, nice bitterness, resinous, earth, caramel and dried fruit with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Pretty tasty stuff. A fitting celebratory beverage.
4.0 Bottle shared by Leighton at CPK, London. Happy birthday! It pours hazy dark amber in color with a long-lasting beige white head. Sweet fruity aroma of peaches, figs and raisin. Taste is quite sweet, a tad syrupy, with caramel and dried fruit notes. Some citrusy hops somewhere as well. Sticky mouthfeel with good carbonation. Need some people to share this big boy.
3.7 Tasted in 2009 (backlog). Dark amber in color with an average sized off-white head. Aroma is caramel, citrus and pineapple. Taste is of caramel, citrus, grass, spices, and tropical fruit
3.8 Draught @ Olutravintola Pikkulintu. Rated on 07.08.2009 Aroma has toffee, caramel, some fruity hops and biscuits. Flavour has hops, some resin, caramel, pineapples and apricot. Nice, I like the hop profile here.
3.2 Ah the benefits of slow moving stock. Heavy, boozy (10% ABV notwithstanding) with fruit cake and spice. Well put together despite the ’massiveness’.
3.5 Bottle no:265/1300 Deep amber with a slightly tan head. Tonnes of wood and caramel, some oxidation but not in a bad way. Loads of dates and raisins. Taste is sweet at first, giving way to a solid bitter finish. Lots of dates and raisins also here, and some medicinal hints from the oxidation. Full bodied and well carbonated.
3.4 @ Mikkeller Bar: Doften är mycket het och smaken känns som en barleywine, stor men len fruktighet. Gott
3.6 Bottle at Mikkeller Bar, November 2012. Hazy brownish with a fairly large fluffy white head. This was sweet one with toffee, malt, yeast, dried fruit and notes of spices. Not bad but quite a heavy one to share with two other maniacs.
4.0 Bottle, shared with a bunch of people at Bergen Ølfestival afterparty at my place, including Yngwie, Beer3000, Palme and the rest of Bergen Beer Geek Tasting Crew. :-) Pours a hazy red-hued brown body with a small white head. Aroma is syrupy malt tones, hints of wood, raisins, alcohol and tobacco (snuff?). Taste is red bitter berries, licorice, nuts, pine, dry wooden tones and hints of paint thinner and alcohol. Full body, medium carbonation. Complex and very, very nice.
4.3 Smell: very complex, both appealing and slightly disturbing. Old wood, dry fruit, musty yeast, alcohol, spicy hops, citrus fruit, brown sugar. Mouthfeel: creamy, full, no noticeable carbonation. Taste: Ridiculously unique, starts flat, then sweetish caramel, with a hop background, then intensely bitter and musty. Orange peel, burnt caramel, herbs. Finish: Very very long, bitter like a pain killer pill, and extra dry. Overall: Love it! Extremely complex. It’s like a double IPA combined with a belgian strong ale.
3.7 Pours amber in color with a tall white head. A strong hoppiness to the aroma which is quite heavy on the herbal and pine qualities. Nice citrus peel notes to it as well. Though the hops are the dominant characteristic, plenty of toffee and caramel maltiness. The flavor has a good caramel sweetness to it, but still features a lot of piney bitterness. Some herbal hop notes along with citrus/grapefruit peel, which also add to the bitterness.
3.7 (Bottle) Pours dark reddish brown with a small sand coloured head. The aroma is heavily “green” hoppy with notes of pink grapefruit, black currant tea, pineapples, apricot and some pine. Sweet-ish, caramelly backdrop. Bit floral. The flavour is medium sweet and medium bitter with a numbing, super mega heavy afterbitterness. Grapefruity, resinous, inky, tropical fruity and caramelly. The mouthfeel is soft, round and sticky with a light carbonation. Resinous, inky and bitter grapefruity finish. 5h lingering bitterness. Medium to full bodied.
4.0 1500 ml bottle (no 667 of 1300) kindly shared by gunnar. Hazy red orange with a three finger thick, creamy, light brown head. Malty, dried apricots and sultanas, hoppy and light wooden notes on the nose. Heavy malt sweetness and heavy bitterness. Resin and toasted notes. Light fruity and light salty. Full body. Syrupy. Smooth to drink and a dry tongue. Quite a lot left in the bottle. Had this a week later and enjoyed it a lot then as well.
4.1 Shared bottle no: 667 at local tasting. Pours cloudy dark amber with a huge frothy tanned head.Aroma of fruity hops, pine and resiny as well, and lots of malty sweetness, caramel. Taste is strong malty sweetness with plenty of fuity hops for balancing. Ends with a dry bitter bite, fruity and mints. This bottle had been standing in my cellar for almost 3 years, very good.
3.4 Bottle nr 166/1300 @ RBBWG thanks to 77ships. Brown coloured beer with a medium brown head and some average carbonation. Fruity sweet malty and hoppy hinted aroma. Full palate. Finish is slightlty hoppy citrussy and slightly malty hinted. Not bad.
3.8 1500 ml. bottle sampled @ RBWG 2012 – personal contribution – bottle nr. 166/1300 – obviously 2009 vintage – dark brown amber with red hue & huge beige head – smell is dark fruits, earthly with fruity hops / pine / exotic fruits – dark fruits, bitter, dark malts coupled with some vintage flavours already beging to creep in, still quite a lot of hop in here, dark fruits blend with pine, fruits, touch exotic fruits, citrus, caramel, spices – still got some life in it but appears like it should have been tasted fresh, ok but not overly impressive, body has a slight vintage feel to it same goes for carbo
3.4 14/I/2012 1.5L magnum bottle @ RBBWG 2012 - BB: n/a - bottle # 166/1300 (2012-57) Thanks to ships77 for bringing the bottle! Little cloudy, reddish brown beer, aery irregular head, yellowish, bit stable, very adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very fruity, pineapple, stinky feet, cheesy, sweet touch. MF: good carbon, full body. Taste: fruity, passion fruit, piny, bitter resin, citrus touches, sweet malts too. Aftertaste: very bitter and dry.
3.4 1.5L magnum @ RBBWG 2012, Antwerpen courtesy of 77ships.
3.1 Massive Mikkeller pt.2 Another bottle provided by an ever generous trader in CA, you rock dude. This one was past it’s prime sadly. Carbonation was a little dead, as was the flavor. You could tell it was something special when it was fresh but not today.
3.1 Magnum. Poured slightly hazy medium amber with a very tall, creamy, sticky, beige head. The aroma picked up peppery and earthy yeast, darker fruits, and sour, more tropical fruits.. some oxidation was setting in.. just a little biscuity sweetness beneath.. seemed like it was degrading a bit. The flavor was fairly sour throughout, with fruity skins leading.. peppery and fruity yeast throughout.. pale and biscuity malts supported.. lots of tart oxidation and fruity notes on the long finish. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. dry and a little stale feeling.. more sour than I needed, and the bitterness didn’t really help.. this may have been better at one point, but it didn’t work for me.
4.2 Deep brown (with some reddish shine) to black, cloudy body. Slightly off-white head. Aroma of hops: flowers, orange, apple, pomelo, ... Harshly bitter (of great hops), light sweet flavour (and some spices): perfect marriage.
(Rating #3953)
4.2 RBESG Sheffield 2009 Grand Tasting @ the Harlequin. Reddish brown color, lasting off white head. A hop explosion in the aroma. The same applies for the flavour. A mixture of hops, grass, pine, fruit, flower. Sticky. Vera very enjoyable brew.
4.1 Bottle courtesy of papsoe. Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Smells of raisins, prunes, some tartness, spicy, caramel, peppery. Tastes of resiny hops, fruity, some spicy elements, velvety mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
3.8 Clear amber colour with a nice big head. Smells caramel, hopy, bit too sweet, nout fruity enough. Tastes very bitter, grapefruit, citrus and caramel. Much co2 but okay.
3.7 Bottle @ Joes Tasting shared with Joes and Dutchdrebus. Best before May 1st 2019. Bottle 725 of 1300 handwritten on the bottle label. Nice clear red color, vast thick off-white to beige head. Smell leather, mint, sweet, light hops, overripe fruits and alcohol. Taste sweet, caramel, spices, mint, fruits and hops. Carbo firm but good. After a while it gets better and better. Smells more hoppy and softer, taste more hops and softer carbo. Would now give 3,8/3,9.
