4.3Head to head vs. Mikkeller George! BA Calvados, vintage 2013:
Pours black oily color, clear, with foamy brown head, which immediately transforms itself to a ring around the glass. Aroma: intense malt aroma, supported with intense Cognac note, hint of vanilla...flavor: intense malt flavor, with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, vanilla, oak, hint of cinnamon, supported with intense note of cognac, which steps forward in second half. Finish is dry, slightly astringent. Body is full, texture silky smooth, carbonation is low. Both are very, very good, for sure the winner is Bourbon BA😉
4.3250 ml bottle. Pours black with a short lived dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate, plum pudding, figs, umami. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, figs, dates, hazelnut, meat, beef. Finish is chocolate, coffee, oldish, wood. Lingering overripe fruits. Full body, velvety, soft and oily mouthfeel, null carbonation. Very solid!
2.3Cremig malziger, etwas oxidierter Antrunk. Holzig, wenig herb, erstaunlich süffig. Später etwas alkoholisch, geringe Würzigkeit. Insgesamt eher schwach. 9/7/8/7/7/7
4.1(Bottle) Pitch black colour with dense, dark brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of strong black coffee, cacao, liquorice, treacle, tar, asphalt, black rye bread, oak wood and a touch of cognac. Malty, roasted taste with strong black coffee, cacao, dark chocolate, liquorice, sweet soy sauce, oak wood, cognac and a warming finish with some alcohol, a generous coffee bitterness and a touch of cognac. Full body, quite sweet. Thick and oily texture. Hardly subtle, but very tasty and fairly well balanced (considering it carries a certain punch). Excellent beer!
3.8Pitch black pour with a nearly equally small black head. Big cognac and roasted malt aroma. Cognac less prevalent in the taste, huge roasted malt note, black coffee, char. Thick oily body.

4.2pours oily black with a resilient dark beige cap offering minimal retention, sticky lacing with residues. burnt raisins, burnt caramel, lots of burnt red fruitiness as well - perhaps fro cognac; roasted soybeans, soy sauce, salt, floral alcohol, spices - aniseed. low carbonation, full body; warming and spicy finish. very solid BA salty stout.
3.9Thick RIS, and it looks it. Calvados not imposing but rounds out the stout. Very rich and worth seeking out.
4.2Backlog, early amateur rating! @ Havregatan 20130405. Bottle from Systembolaget. Roasted malty, coffee, cognac.
3.8How: bottle Appearance: pitch black with no head. Aroma: intense cherry and grape smell, dried fruits, nuts, grass and some chocolate in the back. Palate: almost a full body, low carbonation.
3.0250ml bottle (Drink Shop,Tallinn) 2012 batch
Woh, pure booze coming off this as I pour and bring it close to my nose, cognac heat. Closer up, it’s ashily burnt, raw and charcoaly. Black, brief brown head, looks like obsidian in the glass. Flat palate, slick and oily, carbonation nowhere. Rich burnt roast taste, fortunately not aggressively astringent.Leaves cocoa-powder on the tongue in the finish. Some burntness, and some alcoholic vapours. A bit of a mess, but the glass is finishable. Glad it’s shared 3-ways though,
3.4250ml bottle. Pitch black color. Small to medium head, stays. Sweet, roast, butterscotch, toffee, biscuits and dusty in aroma. Biscuits, roast, dried toffee, almonds, chocolate cake and dusty in taste. Long lasting dusty sweet roast in aftertaste. Taste is bit weird. With every sip it gets more and more boozy. Sweet and boozy brew.
3.6A heavyweight contender, had on tap at Mikkeller Bar
Now enjoying this small potent 12% bottle at home
What I noticed is the thick black pour w no head
and the residue on the glass was an orange hue.
The aroma is sweet and fine spirits A sipper une grande.
Unagi on the tongue
3.5December 11, 2015. Bottle,
Pitch black with a small dense dark brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, cognac, dark sugars, licorice, wood, soy, notes of baked pears, figs and prunes. Taste is bitter and salty with a light sweetness. Finish is roasted bitterness, dark chocolate, coffee, some ash and wood, salty soy and licorice notes, hints of sweet prunes and molasses, lasting salty and bitter roasted notes. Full bodied, very thick and viscous, almost flat carbonation.
Quite intense imperial stout with a quite salty and bitter finish. A bit too viscous which lowers the drinkability.
4.0Pitch black and completely opaque with a two finger frothy mocha head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention for style and ABV, coating the glass with streaks of soapy lacing. Very impressive looking.
Sweet boozy aroma with a really nice barrel character that’s decently integrated into the stout characteristics. Lots of spirit/cognac along with some bourbon, toasted coconut, marshmallow and subtle charred oak/toothpick. Little bit of vanilla and the spirit really comes through without obliterating the stout characteristics. Underneath, there’s a nice balance of roasted and silky malt sweetness. Gourmet coffee beans with bitter dark chocolate, oatmeal and burnt toast. Also some dessert-like sweetness with caramel, hazelnut and chocolate cake. Nice complexity and balance in the nose of this beer.
Slightly chewy/viscous full body with a flavor profile that’s very similar to the aroma. Barrel is more subtle but the flavors are there and nicely integrated into the base. Very nice cognac/spirit flavor without being overly boozy or overpowering. Subtle dry oak along with coconut and vanilla bean. Slight creamy texture with the malt profile a bit weaker than expected. Subtle roast countered by very strong sweetness and boozy heat in the finish. Somewhat burnt dry malt flavor with deeply roasted coffee and roasted nut but the sweetness counters. Light chocolate, dark fruit, caramel and burnt sugar along with boozy heat in the finish. A bit hot for my liking but the high ABV is relatively well masked. Easier to drink after it warms. Nice barrel flavor that doesn’t dominate letting the other flavors come through. Decent mouthfeel but it’s too sweet and needs more roast for balance. Otherwise, this is another solid barrel aged beer from Mikkeller.
4.3By George this a great impy stout. Very viscous and it hugs the glass with velvety goodness. Length on the palate lingers - one to be savoured.
3.9Bottle from The Aviary/Office. Poured jet back with no head. Aroma sweet tons of barrel smokey dark fruit. Light carb med bod. Taste light bitter bitter dark choc barrel undertones.
4.1(Undated Nøgne Ø 250ml bottle from Mikkeller and Friends) Pours inky black with a few tiny pale brown bubbles and no lace. Needs some air to open up. Aroma of chocolate sauce, molasses, dark fruit vinousness, cognac, liquorice, light oxidation, oak and smoky char. Palate is intensely concentrated with notes of dark fruit, cognac, chocolate, dark malt, toffee, liquorice, vanilla, lots of wood. Quite sweet at first, finish is a bit drier though with charred, smoky wood and ash, brandy heat, roast cacao and vanilla prominent. Bit of burn on the aftertaste despite at least a decent bit of age on the bottle. Thick and viscous with almost no carbonation. As you’d expect from George, this is really rich and intense stuff. Even 250ml is almost a challenge to drink. Not sure this is quite as good as the regular or bourbon for me, but I think it is also a bit more aged.
2.6Undated small bottle brewed/bottled at Nogne O, purchased quite a while ago (Summer 2013?) and finally drunk on 9/12/15.
Pouring from a great height to try to get some head, I do succeed in coaxing out a charred-tan head that is half a finger in height and steadily recedes to a ring. Seems pretty opaque even after sitting in a fridge for two years and pouring very carefully to avoid getting the sediment in it.
Chocolate, peanuts, soy, vanilla and a bit of candied plum. Deep char notes but without the usual aggressive accompanying roast/coffee/vinousness. Pretty dull, I’ve gotta say, and it dosent make me all that excited for the flavor, but here’s hoping...
Sweet, of course, and rich, with a coating, velvety, borderline syrupy texture full of char, ash, soy, peanut skin and beans. Good lord this stuff is thick and rich. Yet somehow, it’s not a complete mess and there is a fair amount of acidity attempting to balance. Whether it actually does so is a point of contention (it dosent) and while I don’t mind the tobacco and roast notes on the end, I don’t see any reason why the beer has to be this big and alcoholic. At this point, the aroma is mostly just alcohol, though some salted pretzel and peanut does remain....
I get it, when 90% of your top raters drink 1-2 ounces of a beer, the BOLD FLAVORED beers are going to rise to the top, because you can just have a sip, say "Wow, that’s flavorful!" and move on. You’re not stuck with the rest of the glass wondering what the hell youre supposed to do with it. And that, in a nutshell, is the Scandinavian/English rating scene! Thanks guys, for ruining beer!
3.9Poured into a taster showing pitch black oily soy sauce with zero head. This one is really thick.
The nose shows sweet cognac mixed with gentle coffee notes. Moderate intensity of both and mixed well.
The palate is thick bodied, oily, slick, and very lightly carbonated. Mostly big black dark coffee notes. A very slight cognac sweetness appears in the background. The finish shows a lot of the alcohol and almost chewable coffee flavor.
Aucune effervescence. Nez alcool de fruit, café, boisé. Au palais, gros hit d'alcool puis café ultra présent. Grosse corpulence. Grande longueur en bouche. Assez exceptionnelle.
3.9From tap. Black color with small beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, chocolate, caramel, licorice, dark fruits, wood, vanilla, alcohol. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Full silky body with soft carbonation.
4.3Bottle at home (Nøgne Ø). Black, no head. Aroma heavy malty (caramel, roasted, coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, wood, vanilla, cognac, smoke). Flavor medium sweet, medium bitter, vineous, complex, smooth. Full body, quite flat.
4.0250ml bottle. (Sticker states it is brewed at Nögne Ö, not Lervig...)
Pours impenetrably pitch black, with almost no head, save a little brown lacing.
Huge, complex aroma, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, ashes, licorice, oak, subtle Cognac notes, vanilla, faint smoke, caramel.
Sweet, full bodied (and beyond), high bitterness, low/creamy CO2.
Roasted, oaky, complex taste, coffee, caramel, chocolate, tobacco, licorice, ash, hops, vanilla, wood.
The obvious understatement is that this beer is quite extreme. Served in a snifter, it is great as a digestif, or with heavy chocolate desserts. Apart from that, drinkability is close to zero. Impressive, nevertheless. (2015-06-18)
3.5Pours black with a very dark tan head.
Nose shows heavy roasted malt, sultanas, rich dried fruit and booze.
More roast and booze as flavours along with some sweet bready malt, liquorice and cocoa.
4.3Black with small yellow head. Soy sauce, leather and black cherry. Thick palate. Sweet, ash and wood finish. Overall: refined and well brewed. Fireplace beer. Almost no alcohol
4.1Looks like oil, smells like heaven! Boozy, leatherish smell with lots of burnt malts and cognac notes. Really thick, oily mouthfeel. Sweet taste of chocolate, hints of cognac, definitely barrel aged as you can taste it. Also some coffee taste to it. Almost no bitterness. Barely any carbonation. What a beauty!
4.0Starting to feel like a booking record, thanks going to Willrunforbeer splitting his four variants of George with me. This is just the treat I needed this weekend. Really great aroma that is similar to the base stout. Chocolate fudge hints, light ash, sweet barrel/cognac/wood.
The thicker body that is dense and super slick texture across the tongue. This barrel treatment (just like the bourbon variant) compliments the base stout extremely well. Slight warming sensation after the sip with sweet cognac finish. The carbonation is my only complaint because it was very low, but doesn’t hurt the flavor, just couldn’t score over a 4. Otherwise this is a beautiful stout.
4.0250mL bottle. Pours nearly black with a beige head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, roast. Flavor is dark chocolate, coffee, a hint of oak.
