Mikkeller Hop Series Amarillo

Mikkeller Hop Series Amarillo

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.5 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. A hazy orange beer with a zesty orange fruity and citrus flavour, spicy earthy notes and a warming fruity finish.
2.7 The Amarillo is a little more forgiving than the Warrior, but still pretty gross. Sub par, not worth a detailed description.
3.5 Sample from bottle at the Cardinal stand at Nærbø, Ølfestivalen 2013. Hazy nut golden body with a tanned film. Elderflowers and ripe pears on the nose. Fruity, bitter and malty flavors. Medium body. Long finish.
4.2 33 cl. tomada en el Lúpulo Feroz. Posee color cobre y el sabor muy bien balanceado. Muy adecuada como era de esperar.
3.7 330ml bottle at home. This is similar to the Nugget version but slightly more citrussy aromas and astringent in the finish. Again a lovely smooth malty mouthfeel.
3.5 33 cl bottle 6.8%. Light murdy brown with small head. Fresh and bitter (72 ibu) with pine and hops . bitter aftertaste. Balanced but somewhat boring.
3.7 Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy amber body with a thin off-white head that holds well. Aroma of caramel, lime and faint mango. Flavour of pine, citrus and yeast. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft carbonation. Better than Mikkeller’s Cascade but not quite as intense as their Simcoe.
4.4 Goes down smoother than what I was expecting. Has an amazing aroma. Whish I could try it on tap.
3.6 330ml bottle. Pours a dark orange amber colour, frothy foam off-white head and aroma of passionfruit, mango, citrus, resiny hop. Taste is malt caramel with tropical fruits, orangey notes and a grapefruit, pine, grassy hop bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry bitter finish. Quite drinkable IPA.
4.1 330 ml bottle, enjoyed at Barcelona in a tasting of Centennial-Citra-Amarillo-Simcoe. Pours a dark amber copper colour with a small white head. Aroma is very, very strong with herbal hops, weed, grass, citrus and all that. Very intensive aroma. And so is the flavour; very strong herbal hops, grapefruit, lemongrass, sweet mango fruitiness, weed, mild caramel sweetness and earthiness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation and a very long, lingering bitter, grassy finish. The best from this hop series.
3.9 330ml bottle. Hazy copper color, with big biege head. Nice sweet-bitter hoppy and fruity aroma. Smooth mouthfeel, very well balanced flavore with medium bitter and slightly dry aftertaste. Very balanced IPA.
3.9 Väldigt bra humlebomb men även ballans med malt! Smakade väldigt likt våran Amarillo öl, lite fylligare och mer "djup" smak
3.2 330ml bottle courtesy of Valhalla’s Goat, Glasgow - clear amber brown, rapidly diminishing head, pine, grapefruit aroma, bit viscous, bitter green hop finish
4.1 330ml bottle courtesy of mr_h. Reddish amber brown, decent head. Toffee hop aroma. Tropical fruit & hop flavour. Bitter aftertaste. Not a typical IPA but still really good.
3.6 Bottle from state line Liqour aged at least a year - so you really aren’t supposed to age an IPA ( look at my cellar to see the reason for the unintentional aging) but I think it mellowed the bitterness to make a smooth brew that played up the caramel, malt notes in the beer. So from my standpoint it was a success, but perhaps not the same brew that Mikkeller envisioned.
3.6 Bottled@Mikkeller Bar, Copenhagen (backlog). Hazy amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is sweet malts, fruits, catpissy notes as well as some toffee. Flavour is tropical fruits, mild sap, some caramel malts as well as toffee.
3.9 Bottle at cheese shop. Pours a cloudy amber. Reallllly good. Hoppy and delicious.
3.9 Bottle at cheese shop..murky brown hazy pour..light brown head... one of the milder ipa’s ive had from mikkeller..but still awesome
3.5 Pours clear amber with a large, frothy off-white head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy citrus (tangerine) and floral hops, light biscuit malt and tropical fruity esters. Flavor is heavy hops and medium bitterness, fruity esters, good supporting malt and a dry finish. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation.
3.4 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: a deep bitterness, very nice scent. Taste: strong bitterness, rather dry, dried fruits.
3.1 Fra flaske på Humle i Annen mars-13: den trettende av i alt 19 i serien, og ordet inoffensive ble nevnt. IBU 72, men allikevel mild og lite dominerende. Mer ettersmak enn smak.
3.3 Grass, prune on nose. Alot of dried fruit in taste. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
3.2 Shared 330 ml bottle at Cardinal Pub & Bar (single hop tasting). ABV is 6.8%, IBU 72. Hazy deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of pine, citrus and dust. Hoppy flavour, but not too bitter - the malts somehow seem drier here than in other varieties of this otherwise identical brew. Notes of resin, grapefruit and dust.
3.5 Pours hazy copper with a thick white head. Aroma is citrus, light fruit and caramel. Taste follows aroma with a nice balance between bitter and sweet.
3.4 11th July 2011 Hazy amber beer, good off white head. Dry crispy palate. Fairly bitter minerally orange. Shows fresher orange before a dry bitter finish. Not bad.
3.7 Dark golden color with a nice head. This ale really celebrates the Amarillo hop. Nice fruity citrus aroma with hints of peach or apricot. Balanced malts to back it up - but it doesn’t steal any spotlight from the hop profile. A very nice single hop.
2.5 Nice dark honey colour, hazy with a good white head. Smells like grapefruit with a hint of sweetness. Taste is a bit simple for my taste. The first impression is sweet, and I find the grapefruit bitterness in the aftertaste. An ok beer that proves its point. Probably better if you taste the whole range:)
3.7 Hazy orange colour with a big frothy off white head. Tropical fruity and grape hoppy aroma. Medium body with a balanced sweetness and a fine bitterness. Tropical fruity and grape hoppy flavour with a fine bitter tail. [Bottle from Vinmonopolet Oslo - Vika in Oslo, Norway]
4.1 Aroma is citrus, yeast and a hint of lime/kiwi. The flavor is lime, fruit, citrus, a grapefruit pulp-like palate and a mix of tart and bitter in the finish.
3.9 Bottle from Vinmonopolet, Kvadrat. Pours cloudy golden with a big creamy white head. Aroma of pine, resiny some peach. Taste is smooth, lovely piney bitter hops, dry and bitter aftertaste, truly a great single hop.
