Mikkeller Hop Series Columbus

Mikkeller Hop Series Columbus

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.3 Same copper-amber color as the others in this series - very nice appearance. Aroma is spicy, bready, sort of cheesy, maybe even gingery. Feels more carbonated - very bubbly. A bit of breadiness balancing the hoppy bitterness. Very bitter in a different way than the others - not much else going on though. One of the less interesting of the series.
3.2 Smells very yeasty in a very slightly cheesy way, with some nice malty breadiness. Taste doesn't match the aroma at all - it's quite bitter and dry without much other flavour. Medium body, very dry. A little boring but not bad.
3.5 Bottle 0.33l from Daniels Tongeren. Pours hazy orange amber with medium off white head. Aroma has resin, caramel, earthy, bread, citrus. Taste has light malt sweetness, is medium to very bitter, citrus. This beer has a medium body and soft carbonation. Finish is bitter and long. Boozy aftertaste. Not an easy going IPA but interesting and drinkable.
1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.9 Bottle from John’s Grocery in Iowa City. Slightly hazy deep orange pour with a white head. Pine, but not resiny or bitter. Kind of a mint / menthol vaporous thing going on. Some citrus. This is really good.
4.1 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This orange-amber beer has rich orange marmalade and burnt caramel flavours a creamy mouthfeel and pine on the finish. Excellent!
4.0 Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy amber body with a thin off-white head that holds well. Aroma of mint, white grape, caramel and grapefruit. Bright flavour of minty mouthwash, sharp blood orange and dusty yeast. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft carbonation. A lovely beer that has given me a new appreciation of the Columbus hop.
3.3 Murky amber, rich head, lacing. Aroma is a somewhat sweet toasty/buiscuit malt. Mild hop aroma-this could be aged and definatly wasnt stored refrigerated. Light pine/earthy-evergreen-mint/slight orange. taste is its malt base with light tones of earthy light pine. Pine and citrus in the bitter. Mellow bitter but balanced. I feel a little cheated out of experiencing the true character of columbus by this being as old as whatever date this was made that it does not tell you on the bottle. Ive had his series before but none maybe that fresh, but would imagine they are all pretty great within the first few months.
0.5 Very cloudy bronzy brew with a head of tan head of small to medium bubbles. Nose is strong with the slightly pine scent of hops. Taste is dry initially with a good hit of hops. They start with more pine but resolve to almost a white pepper on the finish. Body is lively. Finish is a touch of bitters. Quite an interesting beer.
3.6 from Erzbierschof - cloudy dark reddish-amber beer with a poor head retention; solid hoppiness where notes of quince dominate; full-bodied, dry and solidly bitter, long fruity hoppy finish with more notes of quince marmalade
3.8 33cl bottle. foamy head. spicy, sweet and bitter (114 ibu) with lots of grapefruit. one of the better hops series beers so far
3.9 330 ml bottle. Pours a deep orange amber colour with a red hue and a white lacy head. Aroma of strong fresh grass, some caramel, wet earth and mango. Flavour is very pleasant with it’s strong, mainly grassy bitterness with floral undertones, grapefruit, strong herbs, citrus, mango and huge complex earthiness. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Long, lingering bitter, earthy finish. Columbus rocks.
3.5 Ambrée légèrement trouble, pétillance moyenne, mousse moyenne vite tombée. L’amertume de pamplemousse domine dès le départ malgré quelques notes herbeuses. Trop peu de nuance...
3.5 Bottle, shared with my wife. Deep amber-orange, slightly hazy, average off-white head. Aroma is sharp conifer and light citrus with underlying caramel malt. The palate is equally hoppy and malty, with more citrus coming through than was present on the nose. The malts are nice but the hops are flattening out for sure. Very bitter finish.
3.7 Bottle from Brewdog shop. Amber color, white head. Intense bitter taste with grapefruit, pine, resin, loads of floral hops and a bit of fruits. Body is mostly dominated by hops, in a good way. Bitter finish with grapefruit and fruits. Excellent, a bit brutal IPA.
3.7 2nd for me in the Mikkeller hop series (Cascade 1). 330ml bottle from Sherbrooke Pours a hazy copper with a fairly frothy head. sticky lacing. Aroma is sweet, tangerine, meyer lemon, and mild sappy, resinous pine note.Taste is mild sweetness (citrusy, piney, floral) and a lingering bitterness - cookie dough, caramel malt character really brought out, and the sticky pine-tar, sappyness of the hops. A beautiful balanced beer that isn’t shy about its IBU.
3.6 Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; cloudy copper pour with foamy beige head, tangerine aroma, tangerine taste grapefruit, malty backbone, big IBU’s.
3.6 Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass golden-copper coloured, nice head. Starts dry-hoppy, modest grasy, a bit soapy. Modest bitter background. Finish well balanced, a bit milder. Okay!
2.8 Poured at The Top in Gainesville. Murky brownish pour and small white head. Malty aroma, caramel, bit of hops pine. Flavor follows with big caramel malt notes, candy brown sugar, not much hop presence. Interesting but won’t return to this one.
4.0 Pours a cloudy(likely from dry hopping) amber colour with a massive sticky, dense, creamy off white head that leaves tons of lace up the glass.Aroma is tropical fruits, some caramel, and sweet orange. Flavour is resin, pine, grape fruit, medium bitterness, light grass, and mild malty sweetness. Nice balance to this one.
3.9 Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a lightly cloudy burnt orange with a half finger of white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, bitter orange, a little caramel and grapefruit. Taste is medium bitter. Citrus and pine. Medium bodied with a slightly slick texture. Lively carbonation and a very long finish. Overall, good. Definitely a fan of this hop.
3.8 Color: clear amber beer with particles, small carbonation and small ivory foam. Smell: caramel, hops, sugar, cane, herbs. Taste: strong hops and caramel taste. Really strong taste of hops. Aftertaste: hops, wet bitterness, and caramel.
3.9 33cl bottle from dranken Geers in Oostakker. Amber body with large white head. Nice fruity , malt aroma and medium bitter taste. ***
3.6 Bottle. Clear dark golden with a fizzy white head. Caramel grapefruit and pine aroma and taste with a clean citrus finish. Quite good.
3.6 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: citrus. Taste: quite fruity, citrus in the taste again. Lots of grapefruit.
3.7 Bottle - I don’t exactly recall where or when. Pours clear, bright copper-gold with a large, frothy white foam head. Dried citrus in the nose, some toasty biscuits, faint caramel and dirt. Medium sweet flavor with juicy melon, mango, orange, light pine, bubblegum, some dirt and grass. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Quick sticky and resinous to finish, with more melon, lingering grass, light boozy warmth, some further dirt and caramel, toast and bubblegum. One of the better beers I’ve had from this series.
4.5 330ml bottle from Warners at the Bay Bottle Shop. Yet another in the line up of great beers from Mikkeller. Strong in the mouth with great flavour and aroma. Big bold and ballsy.
3.6 Fra flaske på Humle i Annen mars-13, den åttende av de i alt 19: aroma av tørket frukt og gress (og karamell - fra malten?). En fast og bestemt smak med engelsk bittermarmelade. IBU 114, og her merkes det.
3.8 Nose is dried fruit, grass, caramel. Taste is bitter marmelade, maltsweetness, lovely bitterbalance trough the whole taste. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
