Mikkeller Hop Series Galena

Mikkeller Hop Series Galena

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.2 Pours a nice hazy amber with light brown head but has heavy dark sediment in it. Has a strong rasin and dark fruit malt aroma. Taste is much more malty than hoppy with dark fruits, dark alcohol, and caramel. A decent bitter aftertaste from malts and hops.
3.3 Okay so this is 6 months out-of-date but... Pours well - hardly any hop aroma to describe - however, tastes berry fruity which well counters the usual Mikkeller too heavily roasted malt - this suits me better than a lot of the others in this single hopped series - short lived but reasonable bitterness - just a pity there’s no big hop aroma which would score a lot higher.
3.3 Bottle. Pours hazy amber color with big head. Aroma is malty. Flavor is also very malty with some bitterness. Too malty. Not worth the price tag.
3.3 On tap at Beer Revolution. Cloudy amber, minimal cap. Aroma of pine, caramel, lemon, fruit. Taste is a bit sweet with a slight bitterness. Effervescent mouthfeel, but overall thin.
2.9 Didn't really enjoy this. Malt is kinda funky to me. Maybe it's just the batch. Hop flavours our mosty resin and earthy. Probably won't have another.
2.9 0.33 l bottle, thanks hanniku! Dark amber color with particulates. Sweet caramelly, toffeish and raisiny aroma. Bitter, toffeish and caramelly taste with fruity hops an menthol. Full body. Too caramelly for Galena come through.
3.5 Bottle (BB 04/14) from BarleyWine, CPH - orange amber coloured pour with medium white head. Sweet fruity aroma and taste, nice exotic tropical fruits, slight spicy bite in the hops, caramel malts, light toffee. One month over best before but still tasting great.
3.2 Pours dark orange with a lot of sediment in the bottom. Decent hop aroma but the hop flavor dies in the body and is over whelmed by the crystal malt.
3.3 Cerveja bem encorpada, bem lupulada. Gostosa. Coloração marrom terra. Compraria novamente.
3.1 Cervesa amb molt bon aroma, refrescant i fàcil de beure. Cerveza con muy buen aroma, refrescante y fácil de beber.
3.8 Bottle shared. Pours cloudy amber. Aroma hints of caramel. Taste is medium bitter, little caramel. Not bad.
3.7 3/5/2014 Thnx to ST247 Pours darker amber no real foam Smell has some vegetables Taste is bit old , bitter , some green aspect . Still good . edit : 4/15/2016 Drank side by side with the 19 other variants of the serie. I would like to note up front that - since these beer’s are no longer in production, they were not fresh. this rating should thus be viewed with that in mind, and can shed a light on the ’ageing’ differences between the variants. They were probably better fresh... Pours rather clear, dark amber, small white foam. Smell is sweet, bit dusty, some booze. Taste is full, fruity, fairly bitter. Bit sweet in the back. Gave it 3.6 as of today, but will keep the Original score.
3.4 bottle. Deep amber with one finger head. Sweet malty body. Quite a bit of peach and citrus. Moderate bitterness.
3.3 On tap @Cimmeria, Oviedo. 28-2-2014. In short: an earthy IPA. Pours murky orangewith nice creamy off ehite head. Good head rention, good lacework. Malty, grassy, caramel aromas. Medium body, viscous texture, average carbonation. Taste is quite bitter, earthy, resins, some residual sweetness and caramel. A bit unbalanced.
3.4 Pours brown to amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and taste is quite the same: pretty malty, caramely with an touch of herbs. Rather subtle hop, resp. could be stronger in taste. Subtle bitterness with a minimal aftertaste. Quite an ok IPA / hops.
3.2 Bottle from a Binny’s mixed 4-pack of Mikkller’s ’Single Hop’series’. Second one in that 4-pack tonight (just finished the Cascade). This one pours a deep orange, cloudy (my fault as it was in the trunk overnight when it was about 2 degrees here in Chicago), nice off-white head with okay retention and nice lacing, a whole bunch of floaties though. Nose is somewhat citrusy (orange peel), malt (which is a plus as it was lacking in the last varietal) , hay. Mouth is medium bodied, candy-likemedium sweet orange-peel and a faint soapiness, caramelly malt backbone, some astringency towards the back end with a dry, bitter finish. Decent. I definitely liked this one more than the Casacde version.
1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.7 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This hazy orange amber beer has orange marmalade, pine and earthy notes, with blackcurrant and slight woody notes on the finish.
3.9 Clean red brown golden body. Pine, spruce, dry leaves, very nice. Much smoother than I expected yet it balances the light biscuit and sweet malty body very well. Sharper but nice bitterness. (33cl bootle from Dranken Geers)
3.7 Pretty solid. No such thing as a bad IPA from Mikkeller. Good citrusy/fruity bitter hops with a little caramel sweetness from the malt. Not pushing the boundary. But very drinkable.
3.8 Another one of the hop series from mikeller Galena hops are a little fruity and really bitter. Leaves a bitter finish and really thirsty.
3.8 Keg @ Brewdog, Shoreditch. Lovely biscuit aroma with a refreshing tropical fruit taste and a touch of caramel bitterness. Personally one of my favourites of the single hop series.
3.5 Lovely orange-gold colour - bitterness and a toffee flavour are the overwhelming characteristics. Pretty tasty but not amazing.
3.6 Pours an orange beer with a good white frothy head. Smells citrus and I guess grapefruit. Tastes fruity. Grapefruit and citrus. Good bitter finish. Good average carbo, thin body and a dry texture.
3.1 33 cl bottle Pours hazy amber color with a huge head. Aroma is kind of biscuity and malty, not a good sign, some mild resinous hops and grass follow. Flavor is also malty and a bit resinous, some caramel and tangy fruits on the finish. A bit stuffy and too malty for my taste. 4414
3.7 from Erzbierschof - cloudy dark amber beer with a little foam left; aroma of honey, almond and pine needles; a good malt body, very bitter, fizzy and almondy honeyish, dry and piney finish
3.6 Bottle. medium creamy white head. medium carbonated. hazy orange colore. strong citrus hoppy nose with caramel malt note. herbal, citrusy, not very hoppy for ~100ibu, little malty finish
3.9 bottle 33cl. amber colour, thick foamy head with distinct lacing patterns. hoppy aroma. spicy, malty sweet and moderatly bitter taste (94 ibu) , oily mouthfeel, balanced and delicate. like this.
