Mikkeller Hop Series Magnum

Mikkeller Hop Series Magnum

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.3 Bottle. Hazy deep golden color with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit and spruce. Dry taste with medium bitterness and some sourness.
3.7 Bottle from Vino Wines. Murky amber body with a thick off-white head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of grain, pale malt, grass. Earthy flavours - rocket, wood and grass. Nice bitterness and a light spicy finish. Medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. I think Magnum would work really alongside a hop with a tangy, fruity profile.
3.1 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This dark amber beer has rich sherry and orange marmalade flavours, pine and grapefruit with warming citrus on the finish.
3.3 330ml bottle at home. This one is sweeter and maltier than the others I have tried in this series. Deeper amber body with fluffy white head with again caramel malts and orangey citrussy hops dominating the aromas. Moderate dry bitter hop finish. Satisfying smooth malty mouthfeel.
4.0 A single hop, magnum is one of my favorites. Super bitter but not as dry as the others. The taste is a little sweeter and it is smoother.
3.4 Hazy copper pour with an off-white head. Aromas of citrus peel mainly. Flavor has lots of citrus peel as well with some earthy/pine notes.
3.0 Bottle courtesy of Mr_H flavour is of dry orange slightly sweet but also sour which is overpowering on the finish
3.0 330ml bottle from Valhalla’s Goat, Glasgow - amber brown with a marginal haze, thin off-white head, citrus, fruity, green hop aroma, bittersweet heavily hopped, dry hoppy finish
3.5 330ml bottle from Valhalla’s Goat. Hazy reddish amber brown, reasonable head. Dry grain hop aroma. Dry biscuit resin hop flavour. Bitter aftertaste. A decent IPA but not my favourite hop.
4.0 Draft.
3.4 33 cl bottle. Pours hazy orange color with a large head. Aroma of very resiny hops and caramel malts, the hop profile is quite aggressive, some grass and herbs also. Flavor of hops, hay, some pale malts, caramel and goose berris, lingering citric fruits on the aftertaste. Bitter palate, sticky sweetish finish. Again, a bit too stuffy and I didn’t quite like the hop profile. 4514
2.9 from Erzbierschof - slightly amber-orange beer with a modest head retention; hoppy notes of plastic and grapefruit; a good malt backbone, light astringency, herbal and spicy bitterness; quite dry with more plastic reminiscence - not convincing
3.4 33cl bottle, bitter (94 ibu) and cleans your gums, notes of grapefruit, alcohol heat is noticeable, aftertaste also bitter and long lasting.
3.2 Bottle from Beer Cartel. Hazy amber, strong caramel aroma, some pine, citrus peel, a bit spicy. Bitterness characteristics of the hops dominate over flavour and aroma. Ok, but not my favourite single hop from Mikkeller.
3.7 Bottle at home. Pours hazy amber with off-white head. Strong herbal pine aroma, hint of malt. High carbonation. Good bitterness. Medium bodied, oily, bitter finish. Nice.
3.1 Bottle from Mi-Orge Mi-Houblon, Arlon, Belgium! Pours dark amber colored with high creamy head. Smell is slight hoppy bitter, caramelly. Starts with nice caramel notes and grassy bitterish hops. Middle part is slight fruity, caramelly, deliciously grassy and fruity. Goes into a caramelly, hoppy-grassy finish with some grapefruit.
3.4 On tap at Beer Temple. Hazy orange colour, white head. Aroma of pine, hint of weed, cabbage, herbs. Flavour is light caramel, pine, herbal bitterness, cabbage, firm pine bitter finish with a hint of spice. Light-bodied.
2.8 From tap at Beer Temple. Pours hazy orange with a medium off-white head. Aroma is grassy hops, herbal, malts. Taste is mostly the same, quite herbal.
3.5 Amber color with a white head. This one is a bit more on the hoppy side with a nice finish, but still lacking the pine and fruit notes.
3.2 Color: nice clear amber beer with small carbonation and medium white/ivory head. Smell: hops, grass and floral nose. Taste: strong hops taste and some bread presence. Aftertaste: strong bitterness.
4.0 pale beige head that disappears rather quickly with some good lacing. amber coloured clear beer. some caramel, herbal and spicy notes that resembles liquor like cognac or rhum, some vanilla, oak/wood .. difficult to find words to describe this aroma. taste is similar to the smell with a light sweetness followed by a nice bitterness that lasts a long time. very well balanced, nice one! (bottle 33cl / notes from backlog)
3.4 Bottle at home. Has a cloudy amber colour with a big light beige whipped eggwhite-like head. The aroma is a bit faint but I find citrus, grapefruit and some pine. Grassy hops in the flavour along with some sweet malt, spices, apricot and some alcohol. Slick mouth feel, and has a medium bitterness. A well-balanced and fruity IPA. Nice.
3.3 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: somewhat smoked, bitterness noticeable. Taste: quite bitter, burned aspects, some sugar.
2.8 Tasted EXACTLY the same as the Bravo version I just drank back to back so I have to cut and paste. No difference once so ever. Wish I could’ve had this fresh. Meh..I’m rating a bottle I got last year from a place where it probably sat for a while so I’m taking that into consideration. All things aside, it’s not a bad beer. Tastes like an English barley wine. Aroma was OK. Hints of earth and melted caramel. Pour was a nice medium brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was all malt. Decent caramel backbone is all this beer has left with just a tiny astringent note that was probably deliciously hoppy. Nice strong carbonation stayed with this beer. Bitter thing finish.
3.8 Nose is caramel, floral, spicy. Taste is grassy and citrusy. No hard bitter here. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
3.5 33cl bottle, poured into an English Pint. Dark Orange colour with a generous off-white head. Hoppy herbal aroma, earth notes as well. Roasted flavours in the mouth, similar to barbacue, with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Good balance, body and carbonation. Peculiar single hop beer, like it.
3.5 Bottle from Kihoskh, september 15th 2012. Amber body, large white head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, honey, pineapple, orange peels. High bitterness, with a pineapple and lemon taste dominating over the malt sweetness. Dry and nice fruity finish.
3.2 Not my favourite, lacks that little something; I cannot put my finger on it. Still a good IPA though.
