Mikkeller Hop Series Mt. Hood

Mikkeller Hop Series Mt. Hood

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

2.8 Bottle from Erzbieschof / Hazy amber color with creamy persitent beige head, good lacing / flower, grassy, hints of citrus an mango, malty aroma / flower, spicy, malty flavor/ light-medium body, light bitterness, soft carbonation, sweet, little caramel grassy finish / lake of bitterness and flavor, hops designed for lager
3.0 Bottle from Yamaichi. Caramel, rich perfumey hops, some earthiness. Cloudy, dull orange/amber color. Rough, sort of peppery initial/ mild hopping plus slightly sweet malt notes / very light finish, and it dissipates too quickly. Light-medium body. Good enough. A bit light and watery.
2.9 33 theoretical IBU. Pours a hazy dark copper from the bottle with thin off-white head that leaves good lace. Aroma is malty sweetness, caramel and pale, slight bread on the back end. Taste follows, sweet and malty, hint of earthiness; the hops have definitely fallen off. Definitely not fresh, but interesting concept.
1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.5 Bottle from John’s Grocery in Iowa City. Murky deep orange pour with a big pillowy head. I rather enjoy this hop variety - mild grapefruit and wood. Hits a good spot for me.
3.6 Bottle from Vino Wines. Murky amber body with a thin white head. Light lacing. Aroma of grapefruit and orange sherbert. Flavour of candy, wood, honey and lemon flavoured Lockets. Sweet malt wins - just - over the sharp hops. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft carbonation. On this evidence, Mount Hood is a sharp, woody hop.
3.7 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This hazy orange beer has citrus and orange blossom flavours with more sweet fruit and a slight woody hop note on the finish.
3.4 330 ml bottle. Pours a dark amber colour with a small white lacy head. Aroma of fresh herbs, mint and heavy caramel. Flavour of caramel, fresh herbs, some berries, grassy bitterness, citrus and some citrus. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and rough-ish carbonation. Finishes herbal, chewy and grassy. Interesting.
3.1 33 cl bottle 6.8% abv. Aroma with grapefruit notes and cooked vegetable. Little bitternes in the taste (33 ibu) probably the lowest in the series. Not bad though but not really interesting.
3.3 Brown amber bodied, small head. Not very hoppy. Old? Pine and resin, moderate. Dusty malt base, simple. Bitterness is light, simple. (33cl bottle from Dranken Geers)
3.3 Hazy orange/copper pour. Aromas of some biscuit notes with citrus hops. A bit strange. Flavor is similar. The biscuit character conflicts with the citrus hoppy notes.
3.3 from Erzbierschof - cloudy copper-orange beer with no head retention; aroma of strawberries marmalade; a good malt body; gently sticky and fizy, some harsh bitterness; earthy almost woody and fruity hoppy finish
3.2 Bottle at Five Points Brewery, Hackney. Poured a clear, light amber with a thin off white head. Aroma of caramel, floral hops and pine. Juicy tropical fruit flavours with hints of apricot and some herbal notes. Leaves dry grains and balanced spruce like hop bitterness.
3.2 Keg at Brewdog Birmingham, hazy amber pour with thin white head, grapefruit aroma, biscuity malt taste with a hint of caramel spice and pineapple.
3.4 33 cl bottle Pours hazy amber color with a large head. Aroma of grassy hops, some citric fruits, mandarin, pine and caramel. Flavor of biscuits, caramel malts, a bit stuffy hops and sweetish fruits. Strong carbonation, too biscuity and earthy flavor. Usually I don’t like Mt. Hood that much but this was decent. 3514
3.7 33cl bottle @ home; from Geers Oostakker; side-by-side tasting with 4 others; pours hazy orange with big white head; low carbo; smell has some sweetness, wood; taste is quite bitter, dry, oily, long bitter aftertaste. Nice!
2.9 Bottle enjoyed at a hotel room in Copenhagen Orange hazy, big frothy head. Smells of citrus zests, grapes and caramel. Moderate sweet, apple peel, zests, some fruity tones and malts. Moderate bitter, fruit peel. Ok experiment, but not very exciting
3.0 Bottle from Beer Cartel. Hazy amber/brown, resin/pine dominated aroma and flavour, a bit dusty/musty/earthy, pineapple, grapefruit, quite sweet finish. Not great.
3.3 Bottle at the five points brewery. Hazed burnt orange colour with a long lasting off white head. Faint orange blossom. Semi sweet cara malt. Some hot alcohol.

2.6 Bottled@Cask Pub & Kitchen, London. Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is grass, grains, fruits, hay, caramel and some mild sweet notes. Flavour is bready and sweet malts along with some grass, grains, hay and mild fruity notes. Quite dull.
2.7 tap at deep ellum. dirty old dough. touch of earthy nuts and caramel. touch of tangerine and tropical fruit hops. hint of pineapple. not too clean. tricky to drink.
3.5 Bottle at home. Has a cloudy dark amber colour with a beige medium creamy head. Fruity hops in the aroma with grapefruit, resin and some sweet crackers, spices and citrus. More pine and resin in the flavour with dry grassy hops and grapefruit. Has a slick and smooth mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. A balanced and nice IPA.
3.9 33 cl bottle from draken Geers in Oostakker. Amber/ copper body with large oof-white head. Sweet , malty nose. Nice bitter taste. ***£
3.5 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: nice scent, rather fruity, little caramel. Taste: good lasting bitterness.
3.3 33cl bottle, served in Shaker. Pours light hazy red with a huge off-white head, very nice. Soft aroma: Earthy hops, yeast, and hints of sugar. Taste is somewhat herbal blended with belgian style notes, leaving behind the earthy bitterness character, which isn’t lingering though. Average mouthfeel and carbonation. Not bad.
4.2 Bottle from BlackHearts&Sparrows. Fruity and malty, the hop didn’t do very much for me. Aromas of peach, cherry, and hints of caramel. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and average length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Amber, with a frothy head.
3.5 Nose is raspberries, light malt, caramel. Taste is lemony, butter, earthy. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
