Mikkeller Hop Series Palisade

Mikkeller Hop Series Palisade

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.1 330ml bottle from Appellation Wines - Cheers Ash! First thoughts - is this off? Very funky nose. Cloudy orange pour, good head, kept there by high carbonation, bit too prickly I thought. Orange notes come through on the taste, but the yeastiness o’erwhelms this one for me.
3.3 33cl bottle from Appellation Wines - who retired this? It’s clearly still available! Appearance - creamy orange with a lovely pillow of lacy head. Nose - earthy, funky, completely lacking in fruit. Maybe there’s a problem with this? Taste - bready, creamy, citrus, definitely better on the nose. Palate - medium bodied and creamy, long zingy finish. Overall - there’s a problem with the nose. The rest seems fine.
3.9 Bottle from Vino Wines. Murky amber body with a large, pinkish head. Excellent lacing. Sweet aroma - honey, maple syrup, tangerine and pine. Flavour of caramel, resin and flowers. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Average carbonation. Palisade doesn’t seem to be a particularly intense hop, given the sweet malt characteristics of this beer, but it’s nice and subtle (though maybe not powerful enough to for a single-hop beer).
3.4 bottle a amber colored beer with a white head aroma malts spicy earthy citrus and hops flavor malts spicy fruits some earthy citrus and bitter hops
3.6 330 ml bottle. Pours a dark amber colour with a small white head. Aroma of sweet caramel, weak herbal notes and some bread. Flavour of slightly complex caramel, strong piney and floral bitterness, bread, herbs and grass. Medium bodied, soft carbonation and rather sweet, bitter and bready finish. Not musty at all and quite refreshing. Good.
3.7 draft @ delirium 9/16/2013 . pours amber, small white foam . smells herbal, tastes bitter, herbal , floral . low carbo, rather sweet. edit 4/15/2016 Drank side by side with the 19 other variants of the serie. I would like to note up front that - since these beer’s are no longer in production, they were not fresh. this rating should thus be viewed with that in mind, and can shed a light on the ’ageing’ differences between the variants. They were probably better fresh... Pours rather clear, dark amber, small white foam. Smell is sweet, more sharp, bit fruity. Not so intense, taste is sweet, dusty, madeira , barely bitter. I’m pretty far appart, at 3.7 when fresh, compared to 3.4 when old ( other variants were waty closer or the exact same ) gonna give this the benefit of doubt, and keep the 3.7. Do note though, that when aged, this was one of the lesser versions for sure.
3.8 Aroma: Pineapple, sweet caramel, mango, Appearance: Deep amber with red highlights, slight haziness and a quickly dissipating off-white head. Taste: Sweet initial taste, Pineapple, grapefruit, herby notes, clean light bitterness. Palate: Light body, medium carbonated, long sharp pleasant hot finish. Overall: Highly aromatic and tasty IPA. Nicely balanced.

3.3 Bottle at home. Pours a hazy dark orange colour with a creamy beige medium head. Fruity and hoppy aroma of lots of grapefruits, resin and some spices, lemon and ammonia. The flavour is more fruity with sweet and sour berries. In addition there’s some caramel, wet cardboard, leather and almost roasted tones in the end. Pretty nice. Soft and slick mouth feel, and has a lingering medium bitterness. A bit faint aroma but is a flavourful and interesting IPA.
3.3 Bottle, thanks to Leighton, at the 500 miles tasting in the Sham, 23/03/13. Hazed dark amber with a thin off white head that clears to the edge and leaves a film. Nose is floral hops, mineral tones, light caramel. Taste comprises bitter hops, caramel malt, sugars, dark over ripened oranges. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, dry finish with a fairly aggressive level of bitterness. Ok but not my favourite in the series.

3.7 Nose is earthy, floar. Taste is spice, fruit and earth. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
