Mikkeller Hop Series Simcoe

Mikkeller Hop Series Simcoe

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.7 33 cl bottle. Light hazy brown, hoppy skunky aroma. Very hoppy and grapefruity bitternes (95 ibu) , dry mouthfeel. Maybe the best in the series.
3.5 Flaska från Kihoskh, Köpenhamn. Doft av tall, jäst, citrus. Grape i smaken, tillsammans med tall och aprikos. Bra beska i avslutningen.
3.8 Dunkel lys beige farve med beige skum. Lukt av malt, sopp. Smak av sitrus, malt og frukt. Melkebaren.
3.7 Fin duft av friske citrusfrukter. Lite skum. Fin honning farge. Fin søtlig smak med bitterhet fra citrusfrukter.
4.1 Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy amber body with tiny yeast flecks floating around. Medium off-white head that leaves lots of sticky lacing. Bright aroma of orange, lime and yeast. Flavour of tangy citrus, orange, creamy malt and pine - very dry and spritzy. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Lively carbonation. A fantastic hop that’s showcased perfectly here.
3.4 330ml bottle courtesy of Valhalla’s Goat, Glasgow - hazy orange amber, no head, pine and grapefruity aroma, pine, citrusy, high carbonation, dry bitter hoppy finish
3.8 330ml bottle shared with mr_ h. Cloudy reddish amber brown, not much head. Resin grain hop aroma. Tropical fruit biscuit hop flavour. Bitter aftertaste. Solid IPA.
3.9 330 ml bottle, enjoyed at Barcelona in a tasting of Centennial-Citra-Amarillo-Simcoe. Pours a dark copper amber colour with a white foamy head. Aroma of strong floral hops, herbs and also strong citrus. Flavour of smooth maltiness, strong floral hops, strong citrus, biscuit and some mild honey/caramel sweetness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation and a lingering bitter, dry, floral and citrusy finish. Very nicely balanced.
3.9 Keg at The Brewdog Bar, Birmingham. Cloudy amber with no head. There was so much right with this beer and then again so much wrong, it looked pretty ordinary towards disgusting, it was served freezing cold and yet the flavour delivery was fantastic, there is pine leaf, citrus, bitter orange and a hint of cherry all in one go. Certainly not a quaffing beer, but it gives you the hop profile better than any other beer.
3.6 Buon ambrato buona schiuma leggermente grossolana buona persisten nado pouttosto intrnso resinoso fruttato pesca nota citrica sgrumata amaro deciso secchezza media discreto corpo nota di caramello
3.9 In bottle. Smells like dark orange, pine and redwood. With a corresponding taste. Not a very surprising beer but a very solid one. Om nom nom.
3.8 Bottle split at JF’s, acquired from Cotteridge Wines, 19/07/13. Hazy dark amber with a medium sized light beige head that retains well. Nose is floral hops, bitter orange, caramel malts, mango, light mineral notes. Taste comprises orange pith, bitter tropical fruits, juicy hops, mineral bite, sugar, bitter grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, hop bitterness in the finish - very lightly warming alcohol. Decent IPA - lots of juicy tropicals - one of, if not the best from this series.
4.4 One of the best single hops IPAs I have had and maybe Mikkellers best? Aroma of lots of red grapefruit and citrus. The taste is similar. The taste of the malt balance up all the hops in a good way.
3.4 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: lemon, citrus. Taste: citrus, grapefruit, good fruity bitterness. Thought this was the citra hop in the blind tasting.
3.8 Fra flaske på Humle i Annen mars-13: den fjortende denne kvelden av i alt 19 i serien, og det var stor begeistring for aroma og smak av grapefrukt, sitron og furunål. IBU 95. Deilig.
4.0 Banana, yoghurt, cloudberries in nose. Floar and cloudberry taste. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
3.8 Bottle, september 15th 2012. Light hazy amber body, lasting fingerthick white head. Aroma of grapefruit, blackcurrant, peach. Strong bitterness, taste is fruity, grapefruit mostly ,some pine, with a hint of caramel. Good bitter and fruity finish.
3.7 3rd July 2011 Very hazy deep amber beer. Good sized pale cream coloured head. Semi soft and semi dry palate with fine carbonation. Rich fresh orange and a little dark marmalade. Some pine in there. Sweeter orange. All set in a creamy malt background. Mildly bitter aftertaste. Pretty decent.
3.9 Dark golden color with a nice head. This ale really celebrates the Simcoe hop. Nice citrus and somewhat spicy aroma although the ale shows signs of aging. I imagine this ale would fare even better with a fresher ale. Balanced malts to back it up - but it doesn’t steal any spotlight from the hop profile. A very nice single hop.
4.2 Aroma is yeast, citrus/lemon zest and pine. The flavor is grapefruit, malts, fruit undertones and a very bitter finish.
3.6 I got a couple bottles of this from the bargain bin at Paul’s Grocery in McCall, Idaho. .Poured a cloudy orange color with an off white head and dedent lacing. Nose of tropical fruit hops. . Medium in body with a good balance between hops and malts, and s very nice bitterness that holds up im the finish. Good single hop bee
3.7 Hazy orange colour with a fine frothy off white head with a fine lacing. Tropical fruity and rich grape hoppy aroma. Medium body with a balanced sweetness and a fine bitterness. Tropical fruity and rich grape hoppy flavour. Nice bitter tail. [Bottle from Vinmonopolet Oslo - Vika in Oslo, Norway]
3.5 Bottle... Pours a hazy caramel color with a mid-sized, frothy, off-white head. Great retention. Surprisingly, the nose features the malts - marmalade, fruitcake and sugar cookie – providing only a suggestion of the earthy, Simcoe hop bill. Full-bodied with a whole-milk mouthfeel and modest carbonation. The flavor is balanced perfectly – sweet, fruity malts keep the acrid, earthy bitterness in check. Finishes crisp with light bitterness. This bottle has some serious age on it and the beer has responded favorably. Several layers of complexity have developed in both the aroma and flavor. I’m not much of an IPA fan, so the changes that have occurred here are welcomed. Bottle courtesy of growler!
3.5 Strong aroma is more fruity than hoppy, a bit on the sweet side but not off-putting. Pours a clear, dark amber headed towards mahogany with a thick, persistent, fluffy pale tan head. Strongly hoppy flavor has a sweet fruity note that peeks through and balances the bitterness of the hops. Smooth texture is rough around the edges and has decent fizz and body.
4.2 Bottled. Poured medium orange with a creamy, well-retained beige head. The aroma picked up juicy pine resin, grapefruit, and pear hoppage over soft, mostly biscuity malts.. really well done. The flavor found juicy orange and spicy pine bitterness over sweet caramel and biscuity malts.. dries out toward the finish, leaving a long bitter citrus over bready malt impression. Medium-bodied with moderate-plus carbonation on the palate (though it thinned out a bit on the middle).. well-balanced, tasty, and engaging. Great beer!
3.7 0,33l bottle. Golden with a nice small head. The hop aroma really punches the nose, and I’m a sucker for the simcoe hop. This beer series is not about any smoke and mirrors. The maltbase is simple and the focus is completely on the hop. And what a hop this is. Too much and this will throw off a resiny flavor, and this one is well balanced. A great IPA indeed.
3.8 33cl bottle from Vinmonopolet, Vika. Pours hazy, deep amber with an off-white head. Very fruity and hoppy aroma with tropical fruits, citrus, grapefruit, malt and hints of caramel and floral notes. Sweet and fruity with a nice bitterness. Very well balanced. Bitter aftertaste with grapefruits. One of the best in hop series that I have tried so far. (2012-10-26)
3.7 33cl bottle. brewed 2012-03-21, best before 2014-03-21. No batch info. orange colour with a medium big white had that settled down fast. Aroma is very fresh and laden with tropical fruits. A bit more aroma than Magnum. Hints of bread. Flavour is sweet and laden with tropical fruits and citrus. Some passion fruit. Short aftertaste
3.9 Intro: I tested 10 beers from Mikkeller’s Hop Series over a two day period. Some characteristics were quite similar, so I’ll divide this rating in two: a general part for the Hop Series and a specific part for the individual beer. The beers that were tested (in testing order, sorted by IBU): Willamette, Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo, Citra, Simcoe, Super Galena, Sorachi Ace, Bravo and Columbus. General: All beers had a bit to much malt aroma and sweetness in my opinion. I’m not sure I liked the choice of Munich malt. In general, they all lacked some carbonation as well. Quite good beers though, I’m just pointing out some flaws. Specific for Simcoe: Lots of citrus and hop aroma. Very good. Quite bitter.
3.8 Dark golden pour w/ a huge fluffy white head w/ big bubbles and sticky lacing. Big fruity aroma citrus and a touch of a piney resin. Full well coated palate a bit acidic and tacky on the tongue. Hints of orange zest some passion fruit only a little more tart, maybe under ripe. A touch of grassiness in the finish w/ some hints of caramel. A bit more acidic than expected. Good but not great.
