Mikkeller Hop Series Sorachi Ace

Mikkeller Hop Series Sorachi Ace

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.9 Bottle from Erzbierschof / Hazy amber color, beautiful beige head, good lasting and lacing / aroma of coconuts, pineaple frutiy, hints of caramel / Flavor is resinous, herbal, coconuts, caramel / Medium body, fizzy carbonation, medium--high bitterness, long bitter herbal finish / really good, a little bit too fizzy but i really enjoyed this beer, this hops is amazing
3.8 Particular taste. A single hop ipa perfect colour and also barm. Aroma different by others
2.8 Dunkel strågul farve med lyst skum. Lukt av sitrus. Smak av søt malt og sitrus. Melkebaren.
3.3 Frisk duft av citrus frukter. Dunkel grumset gulbrun farge. Kremet dekkende skum. Frisk smak av citrus.
4.0 Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy amber body with a thick off-white head that slowly fades. Average carbonation. Excellent lacing. Unusual aroma of lemon, vine tomato, furniture polish, mint and bubblegum. Flavour of aniseed, pine, muted citrus and Black Jack sweets (thanks to DruncanVeasey for that). Medium body with an oily texture. Nice carbonation fizz. A complex beer and a complex hop. I’m still not sure if I like Sorachi Ace or not, but it definitely intrigues me.
3.8 Keg at Brewdog Birmingham; dark copper pour with big beige head, hubba bubba aroma, resinous pine action and some gooseberry.
3.2 33 cl bottle. Light murdy brown, huge head. Taste and aroma a bit rubber-like. Bubblegum notes too. Very bitter (102 ibu). Thanks to Mikkeller R&D I now know that sorachi will never be my favourite hop...
3.9 Bottle at five points brewery. Hazed vibrant burnt orange colour with a long lasting off white foam. Nice classic funky lime coconut aroma. Flavour is mod sweet cara malt. Good sorachi character great stuff.
3.3 Part of a 5 bottle tasting. Seems a colourful one this, and possibly a little confused. Some definite bubblegum, tropical fruits and a moderate bitterness. Perfect with spicy Asian finger food.
3.8 Flummoxed indeed. Thought I’d had the Nelson. Ah well. Sorachi is ace. If a little odd. Odd is good. Thankfully.
3.9 Up with citra as my favourite hop. It always seems to surprise me. And it has the best name for a hop in the world. Although, if someone names a hop Ernest then that will be the best.
3.8 330ml bottle from Great Grog. Reddish brown colour, reasonable head. Flowery fruity hop aroma. Flowery biscuit grapefruit hop flavour. Citrus aftertaste. Quite different from other beers in this series but still good.
3.9 from Erzbierschof - light hazy reddish-amber beer with a persistent beige foam; a fair hoppy aroma of coconut with notes of lemon, some earthy woody notes, almondy finish with a solid bitterness, more notes of coconuts and hints of wood
3.5 On tap at Beer Temple. Hazy golden orange colour, white head. Aroma of Hubba Bubba, oak, floral and caramel sweetness. Flavour is oak, bubblegum, medium-bitter finish. Light-bodied.
3.3 From tap at Beer Temple. Pours hazy orange with a medium off-white head. Aroma has some citrus, sweaty, bit less malty than the other 4. Taste is citrussy, grassy, some lemon, medium bitter.
3.8 Pours a dark amber with two fingers of fluffy beige head. Nose is incredible. My first beer with sorachi and I’m already in love. Nose is pineapple for days, some sweet malt, a hint of lemony citrus and a bit of grapefruit. Taste is more subtle. Some more lemon hop character and some grapefruit on the palate, with a strong malty backbone and a lingering grapefruit bitter finish. Some honey and just a hint of booziness too. The pineapple is there, but not as strong as on the nose. Bottle seems slightly old as it doesn’t taste of 102 IBU, but still delicious.
3.0 quite dense light beige head that disappears quickly, but not entirely, with structured lacing. amber clear colour. aroma of malt and herbs, dill. very pronounced taste of dill, alcoholic, malt with a long bitter aftertaste. quite dense mouthfeel, a lot of carbonation and medium body. bottle 33 cl
3.9 Second bottle tonight from Cornelius. Second better than the first. Lovely amber pour with off white generous head that lingers. Then piney lemon and grapefruit on the nose. Fizzy tangerine moving through to lemon with a mellow boozy sharpness and sweetness all rolled into the end.
3.2 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: fruity, little lemon, acidity. Taste: lasting bitterness, peculiar aftertaste, can’t really describe it. I recently had the Duvel Tripel Hop with the same hop, never thought that those beers had the same hops during the blind tasting...
3.5 Bottle at home. Pours a cloudy amber colour with a medium light beige head. Herbal hoppy aroma with pine, slightly smokey and rich malt, some tropical fruits and dried peaches. The flavour is dominated by grassy hops with a touch of lemon, and ends pretty dry. Rich and smooth mouthfeel, with a lingering heavy bitterness. Both a tasteful and aromatic IPA, and the hops shines through it all. Balanced and nice
3.5 Love the concept but think I got an old bottle with this one. Cloudy 24 karat pour with a 1/2 inch eggshell foam. Candied citrus, lemongrass and orange peel in the nose. Grapefruit pith, lemon zest, and leafy evergreen flavor. Solid amount of caramel, toffee, and honey indicating age. Medium mouthfeel. Still not bad.
3.4 Bottle, Stirchley Wines, Brum. Hazy orange pour with a generous white head. Fragrant nose of citrus and herby hop, Flavour was fruits, caramel, spice with a slight earthiness. Dry bitter finish. Ok, but not my favourite hop from their excellent saga. Think that’s what you call subtle labeling by the way....
3.1 Bottle. Amber beer with a dark cream head. Earth and light vanilla aroma with light citrus. Vanilla and earth flavor with light pine and light citrus. Medium bodied. Light pine and vanilla linger with earth and light citrus.
2.8 Fra flaske på Humle i Annen mars-13: sjette av i alt 19 i serien, og denne luktet sylteagurk og dill. Smaker heldigvis bedre enn den lukter, men minner for mye om rå champignon til å bli en nytelse. IBU 102.
3.5 Nose is orange, white pepper, lactose, cooked pear. Taste is citrus, mandarin and lactose
3.4 Bottle (discounted) from Five Points Bottle Shop (Lumpkin St.) in Athens. Coconut, butter, yeast aromas. Clear, bright copper/brown color, filmy head. Very sweetish initial / coconut and strawberries in mid / finish is pleasant, with a lingering jam-like sweetness and mild bitterness. Thin-medium body. Okay. This one has held up better than some of the others in the series (sampled at the same time). The hops have maintained some integrity.
3.5 Clear amber of color with an off white head. An aroma of fruit, spice, dust, oranges and sweets. A flavor of spice, hops, herbs, dusty, dry and pineapple.
3.5 33cl bottle (BB:? Wish Mr Mikkeller would entertain the non-avantgardist concept to put a BB stamp on the label, so as to judge these hops by their decay time..) This crazy Japanese hop is all over the place! - at least in this mix, as I enjoyed it in Troubadour Magma’s edition for it. Soap all over the place, but soap mixed in with exotic fruit juice, well placed on a full malt base, a soapy coat cloaked over a malty--- (etc.) Picked up (stale-ish) lemongrass, which is the one herb that always wastes away in our fridge for weeks after having cooked Thai for once; the kiwi remains a hint, anything else I’d have to guess, as I had a mouth full of soap to come to terms with! - Schizogenetic plus feature: this had the same great round body of all the other Single Hops Series. Hm, weird fruity soapy head + tasty round body...? Mikkeller should re-dub this the Bathing Anna Nicole RIP/IPA!
4.6 2/26/2013 From geers . Pours amber , nice foam ! Beautifull ! Smell is not intense , and not that hoppy . Get some nice exotic fruits however Bitter , high carbo Taste is just WWAAAAAAW sweet kiwis, mango , juicy , bitter , coconut . Daaaamn this is unexpected good ! Even great , maybe even better ! 4/15/2016 Drank side by side with the 19 other variants of the serie. I would like to note up front that - since these beer’s are no longer in production, they were not fresh. this rating should thus be viewed with that in mind, and can shed a light on the ’ageing’ differences between the variants. They were probably better fresh... Pours rather clear, dark amber, small white foam. Smell is yoghurty, very lactic. Taste is sharp, lactic, yoghurt, coconut and grass. Still one of the most unique hops, and it’s differences remain very clear even after years. Fairly bitter, but way to lactic. As most of the one’s i’ve had before had a difference in score of 0-0.4 , this one is a huge difference, as I curently gave this a 3.5. Which just comes to show, sorachi is one of the best hops out there, but ages the least , probably. As like the others, Original score remains since they are past BBD now.
