Mikkeller Hop Series Super Galena

Mikkeller Hop Series Super Galena

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.0 Hazy orange brown with a ton of sediment and a little ring. Big caramel malts in the nose. Taste is caramel and resinous. Big bitter after, fairly sweet and dry. Okay. Maybe a bit past prime.
3.4 bottle. Deep amber with one finger head. Sweet malty body. Similar to the Galena with quite a bit of citrus, but a little more bitterness.
3.8 Un poco flojo este lúpulo. ..pero no esta mal...quizás demasiado turbia la cerveza. .pero bien balanceada. ..
3.5 Bottle. Unclear deep orange with a thick good lacing foamy off white head. Aroma is citrus, dry grass, melon, peach, caramel. Taste is medium sweet and medium to heavy bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Long bitter hoppy finish.
3.3 Reduced to half off, I should know better than to spend my coin on old beer by now. Copper dead yeast soup with a slowly fading large tan topper. Aroma of caramel, amber, biscuit, grassy hops and some peach. Taste is bready and floral with caramel, wort and stalky notes. Aggressively bitter, I don’t like this hop all on its own very much.
Aroma a ligero tostado.
3.5 Pours a translucent dark copper from the bottle with dissipating off-white head that leaves good lace. Aroma is malty sweetness, caramel and pils, slight grassiness on the back end. Taste is less malty, better balance, but the hops have definitely fallen off. Lasting bitterness, bit of burn on the way down. Definitely not fresh, but interesting concept.
3.9 Bottle from Erzbiershof - Hazy amber color, persistent creamy beige head - resinous, pine, earthy, caramalt aroma - flavor are the same, resinous, pine, earthy hops with good malt backbone (caramalt) and hints of yeast - medium body, strong bitterness, dry, long earthy bitter and dry finish - bitterness showing more than others in this series
3.4 Smells yeasty, resinous with some toffee sweetness. Tastes floral and honey sweet but ends very dry and very, very bitter. Palate has just enough slickness to match the dryness. Definitely not bad but of the single hop IPAs I've tried (eight in all), I'd say it's middle of the pack.
3.5 Great copper color with relatively thick head and lacing. Very floral aroma, somehow smells like sawdust - though not in a bad way. Taste starts out incredibly sweet, honey, flowers, finishes bitter and quite dry. Nice thick palate. Very interesting beer but too bitter to drink a lot of.
1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.4 Bottle from Brewdog shop. Dark amber color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, peach, pine, caramel and hops. Bitter finish with citrus, pine and a bit of peach. Very nice IPA, surprisingly smooth considering the high IBU.
3.8 Dunkel lys brun farve med lys beige skum. Lukt av sopp og grapefrukt. Smak av malt og sitrusfrukt. Melkebaren.
3.8 Fin duft av honning og citrus frukter. Lite skum. Fin honning farge. Frisk smak av honning og citrus.
3.5 33 cl bottle 6.8% abv. Amber color with creamy head. Bitter (96 ibu) and smooth mouthfeel. Very bitter after taste. A bit boring.
3.5 Draught at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Pours murky orange with a moderate white head. Nice caramel, fruity, light hoppy aroma. Flavor is sweet followed by a light bitterness, tropical fruits, citrus.
3.9 Bottle 0.33l from Daniels Tongeren. Pours hazy dark amber with off white head and some sediment. Medium carbonation. Aroma is malt, hops citrus and grapefruit. Taste is predominantly malty and bitter. Grapefruit and bitter orange with very little sweetness. Complex beer. Very good but not an everyday choice.
3.9 14/IX/13 - on tap @ Hoppy Loft (Delirium café, Brussels) - BB: n/a (2013-851) Thanks to KyotoLefty for sharing the beer! Clear deep orange to red beer, creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: fruity, exotic fruits mainly, sweet, spicy, bit sugary impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sweet, malty, jam, red forest fruits, citrus, sweet, pretty bitter and spicy. Aftertaste: fruity, dry, piny hops, honey, sweet and fruity, red fruit jam. Weird and interesting, I liked it.
3.3 Tap at Hoppy Loft. Light brown, cloudy, with lace. Spicy nose, grass and chocolate, but a bit faint. Spicy orange flavor, speculoos, strawberry jam, caramel, sweet and cake-like. A weird IPA. Interesting.
4.2 Sampled draft @ Delirium Hoppy Loft during Zwanze Day shenanigans. Appearance is hazy, murky fox orange, slightly off-white head. Smell is big grapefruit, very hoppy, very fruity, touch caramel, small touch of pine. Taste is pretty bitter, slight caramel malts, grapefruit, slight overripe peaches, some bitter herbs in the back, pretty fruity, faint herbs. Full, very slightly yeasty body. Pretty nice, def. neater than the single hop / hop series Mikkeller’s I had a long time ago. (Thx! for sharing people!)
3.6 9/4/13 draft @ hoppy loft pours blonde, small white foam . hoppy smell taste is mostly bitter, not realy aromatic/floral taste is the same . ok, but not my type of hops edit : 4/15/2016 Drank side by side with the 19 other variants of the serie. I would like to note up front that - since these beer’s are no longer in production, they were not fresh. this rating should thus be viewed with that in mind, and can shed a light on the ’ageing’ differences between the variants. They were probably better fresh... Pours rather clear, dark amber, small white foam. Smell is more medicinal than the other versions. Taste is intensely bitter, woddy. Aftertaste also is very bitter, still. Fun to see how I rated it the exact same number ( 3.6) on both occasions !
3.3 33 cl bottle. Pours murky orange color with a huge frothy head. Aroma is quite straightforward with caramel malts, hops and fruits. Resinous hops on the flavor, sweet caramel, malts and sweet fruits, some biscuit notes make this feels a bit stuffy. Somewhat bitter palate. Not the best of these single hops. 4414
4.2 Bottle from Beer Cartel. Murky dark orange/red, strong pineapple and tropical fruit characters, slight yeasty notes, slightly grainy, caramel malt, quite bitter but well balanced. Different, but very good.
3.9 Pours a very unique, opaque mahogany with a huge 3 finger, off white head that lingers around. Not much lacing and almost no carbonation. The nose is very hoppy with a surprisingly high amount of yeast and malt. Tropical fruits are very much present here with a slight touch of caramel. The mouth is very bitter, but not an overpowering bitter. The hops in this series are definitely citrus hops. A lot of grapefruit and lemon. There is a malt presence, but it’s subtle. Not a huge beer, but a slow sipper none the less. After this beer warmed up, it took on a lot of barleywine characteristics. Very malty and yeasty with a lot of dark fruits.
3.5 On tap at Independent Ale House. Aromas of sweet Malta, tropical fruit including pineapple, and little bit of bread and caramel. Flavors of strong hop bitterness, sweet bready malts, tropical fruit, and caramel. Now that I am homebrewing I find these beers more interesting, but would not say this OA great stand alone IPA. Might be an interesting hop for a barley wine.
3.8 330 ml bottle. Pours a deep amber colour with a large frothy white head. Aroma is rather strong and pungent with notes of grapefruit, peach and some wet grass. Flavour is full-on bitter with floral hops, grapefruit, peach, pine and strong pineapple sweetness. Medium bodied, thick mouthfeel and a long, fruity, lingering bitter and dry finish. Much stronger than the normal Galena and has a lot more character, although this seems to be a fresh bottle. The normal Galena one wasn’t as fresh.
4.2 Yes! Big pineapple beer. Having this on the back of a disappointing lager! The aroma hits the nose right after cracking the top. Big deep fruit hit. Muddy gold pour with big foaming head that fades slow like. Massive pineapple on the nose, as well as a healthy dose of funk. A little frothy in the mouth though. Damn shame as it’s nectar.
4.1 draught@Erzbierschof - hazy reddishamber beer with a persistent beige foam; nice lace; hoppy aroma of pine needles, caramel and earth; a good malt backbone, rounded and tasty; fair and long lasting bitterness; hoppy aftertaste of spices, caramel and herbs; long lasting - very nice
3.2 Bottle shared at home - cheers Steven! Pours a hazy orange with a decent white head. Aromas are muted, some caramel, some dark fruits. and earthiness. Some of those fruits turn into blackcurrants when tasting. Finishes thin, and a bit disappointing.
3.5 Tap. Pours hazy orange. Nice fresh hoppy aroma. Grassy, creamy and some hay. Medium body medium carbonation.
