Mikkeller Hop Series Tettnanger

Mikkeller Hop Series Tettnanger

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

2.8 38 theoretical IBU. Pours a cloudy copper from the bottle with particles in suspension, dissipating off-white head that leaves light lace. Aroma is malty sweetness, caramel and toffee, slight grassiness on the back end. Taste follows, hint of earth, but the hops have definitely fallen off. Definitely not fresh, but interesting concept.
2.8 Bottle. Loved the ideal behind this but way too expensive to try everyone. So I waited on trying these. Almost missed out. Last bottle on the shelve for this retired beer. Dark golden color, slightly hazy. Lots of floaties. Medium head. Taste is typical IPA, except, the aftertaste is not as bitter. Nice aroma, citrus, grapefruit.
1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.3 Bernstein, feine luftige schaumkrone, aroma leicht alkoholisch, nicht so fruchtig, leicht hopfig, mässige bittere im geschmack, guter malziger hintergrund, abgang etwas zu flach
3.5 bottle a amber colored beer with a white head aroma malts citrus spicy earty and hops flavor malts citrus spicy pineapple grapefruits and a bitter hoppy finish
3.7 Clean brown flowing body and large head. Leather, light spice, pine, tea. Clean bitterness, clean yeast, nice aftertaste with this hop. Nice hop, complements the light malts, biscuity body very well. (33cl bottle from Dranken Geers)
4.0 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. A hazy dark amber beer with floral fruity notes, tropical fruits and elderflower followed by orange and a creamy mouthfeel to the finish. Excellent!
3.1 Bottle from Brewdog shop. Amber color, white head. Bittersweet taste with caramel, citrus, a bit of roasted aroma, grass and a bit of hops. Very mild body for an IPA. Bittersweet finish with caramel and citrus. A nice demonstration of Tettnanger hop, but quite unbalanced.
3.3 33 cl bottle. Cloudy orange brown colour. Creamy head. Weak yeasty aroma. Not very bitter (38 ibu) but fruity and refreshing. Dry bitter mouthfeel. Ok for a low bitternes ipa but not that interesting either.
3.3 330 ml bottle. Pours a dark amber colour with a white foamy head. Aroma of caramel, some weak herbal notes and quite heavy maltiness. Flavour of heavy caramel malts, grassy bitterness, sweet fruits and weak herbal notes. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Finishes sweet, warming and bitter. Decent, but this hop is just not the most suitable hop for single hop IPAs. Base beer with it’s sweetness comes through too much.
3.1 Bottle from Erzbierschof - Hazy amber color. with small white head - flower, grass, caramalt aroma - bready, grassy, caramalt flavor- sweet, medium body, good carbonation, medium/low bitterness, medium grassy finish - i’m not fan of this hops

3.4 Backlog: 33cl bottle Geers 2012, sampled Summer 2012. Rating this from notes, yet still asynchronously "side by side" with the Tettnang Hopfenkrone Pils: the confrontation proves that the delicate grass, citrus & white pepper Tettnanger seems to be an ideal Pils/pale ale hop, and easily loses its edges when confronted with caramalty Vienna or darker malts, where it leaves a somewhat tired and besieged impression. Remember this beer was dominated by tasty base ESB-like caramalts, given an indefinite citrus & minty edge. Extra points for establishing a precedent with the brave uncool didacticism of this series.
3.1 Draught at Delirium. Brown-orange with a fine head. Grassy caramel nose, light lemon. Rich malt flavor, caramel, chocolate, grass. Light orange and esters. Nice bitterness.
3.5 Smooth, a little sweet for an IPA and fruity. A touch of citrus and caramel in the malts.
3.1 Tap @ Fairbar, Aarhus. Hazy amber with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - grass and herbal. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish. 070913
3.0 Draught @ Fairbar. Pours slightly hazy orange with a creamy white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, little grass, old hops. Flavor is malt, caramel, dusty, old grassy hops. Medium body, soft carbonation. 070913
3.1 Tap @ fairbar Aarhus. Slightly clouded dark orange, medium off white head, nice lacing. Aroma, it feels old, not mich hop aroma left, malty, smells like a tuborg classic. Taste, better than the aroma, but still old, malty, slightly hoppy, some berrie motes.
3.6 (Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 27 July 2013) Hazy dark amber colour with dense, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, toast, grass, hay, dried apricots and slightly earthy hops. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, treacle toffee, apricots and a grassy, earthy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Interesting with only noble hops in an IPA, but this worked out quite well. Nice one.
2.9 33 cl bottle Pours hazy amber color with a large head. Aroma of grape fruits, hops, some grass and goose berry bush. Flavor of caramel malts, grape fruits, goose berries and some wooden notes. Medium carbonation, bitter fruity palate with a harsh malty finish. Some weird off-flavors. Not very pleasant. 3413
3.5 Keg at brewdog... Amber... Thin tan lacing... Soft sweet fruity... Jui y... Zezty lime nose... Soft toffee.. Juicy malts... Lime and tropical tones ok
4.0 Tap at Brewdog, Leeds. This has the exact same aroma as the first beer I ever drank, about 30 years ago. That was Wards Bitter, brewed up until 1999 in Sheffield. It tasted not unlike it too! Sold.. to the gentleman with the big nose..
3.5 Peu d amertume, un final terreux, racines. Cette single hop est très agréable et discrète
3.6 Bottle from Beer Cartel. Hazy orange/amber, citrus, pine, grass, spicy/peppery, quite subtle, nothing stands out, but quite nice.
3.9 33cl bottle @ home; from Geers Oostakker; side-by-side tasting with 4 others; pours hazy orange with big white head; low carbo; smell is exotic fruits, flowers; taste is bitter, malty, some wood, some dryness. Best one I had so far!
3.7 from Erzbierschof - hazy dark amber beer with a little foam left; aroma of spices and almonds; honeyish; pretty aromatic; a good malt body; decent and rounded bitterness, more gentle spicyness and herbal tones in the finish
3.5 Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass dark golden, nice head. Mild-hoppy aroma. Starts flowery-hoppy, modest soapy. Dry background, not too intense. Finish milder. Okay.
3.4 Bottled. Hazy orangeish amber colour with a mediumsized slightly off-white head. Aroma is bready and caramel malts along with fruits, toffee and some slight herbal and hayish notes. Flavour is grassy, flora, mild fruityness along with some bready and caramel malts to it. Quite mouthdrying palate and a nice fresg grassy and floral aftertaste.
4.3 33cl bottle from dranken Geers in Oostakker. Dark amber body with a nice of-white head. Aroma of bread. Nice resin and light caramel malt taste. *****
3.5 Deep amber colour with great head and lacing. Citrus malt hop spice aroma. Herbal spice malt flavour. Fizzy palate.
