Mikkeller Hop Series Willamette

Mikkeller Hop Series Willamette

This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

3.5 Bottle. Hazy amber pour with some particles and a huge frothy offwhite head. Aroma with lots of malt and some notes of yeast. Taste is sweet and has some dry bitterness. Various fruity notes as well. Ends metallic
1.1 I was looking forward to Trying Mikkeler, since it gets so many praises of being good and innovative brewer. I was excited to find It’s Hop Series at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my anticipation and excitement was not matched by high standards that everyone praises Mikkeller to live by. Everyone in supply chain is to blame… Mikkeller does not have production dates, Distributor Trying to sell the product no matter what, Binny’s not having balls to stand up to its supplier and let them know that it is out of date and no good. I was pissed… All of them were old and stale, therefore complete waste of time and money. Every time I come across bad batch I swear to stop buying anything that has no dates… I just might do that, since there are plenty of other choices… Going Back to Mikkeller Hop Series… All of them Poured A Shade Lighter Or A Shade Darker of Muddy Brown. All of them Had Smaller or Larger Floaters. Huge Head, Decent Lacing. Earthy, Stale Hops Aroma. Tasted pretty much the same: Earthy, Malt, Stale Hops. Moderate Bitter Finish… Pass It Unless You Know It Is Fresh…
3.7 Glowing body, clean and with large head. Dark fruit, toast, spruce, straightforward aroma. Drinkable. Juicy bitterness, better than expected. Nice hop but straightforward taste profile. (33cl bottle from Dranken Geers)
3.7 Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This is a hazy orange beer with sweet citrus fruit and orange blossom flavours, toffee notes and more citrus on the sweet finish.
3.4 Orange, schöne weisse schaumkrone, aroma nicht so stark, etwas nach orange, geschmack nicht allzu komplex, etwas süss malzig mit bittere, angenehme rezenz
3.7 Good bitter hops with a piney, earthy and floral taste. A little sweet from the malt too, as are the others in this series, but maybe the lower citrus content in the hops allows the sweetness to come through more in this one. As always, smooth and very well balanced.
3.2 This one is probably the harshest of the single hop IPAs from Mikkeller. Copper pour, aromas of earthy, pine hops and some floral hops as well. Flavor is sticky resinous pine and earthy hops. Bitter finish. Not as well balanced as the others but not a bad beer.
3.7 9/16/2013 draft @ delirium pours amber, fuzzy good white head, smells pretty grainy/hoppy taste is sugary , bitter, sweet, somewhat floral . good ! Edit 4/15/2016 - Drank side by side with the 19 other variants of the serie. I would like to note up front that - since these beer’s are no longer in production, they were not fresh. this rating should thus be viewed with that in mind, and can shed a light on the ’ageing’ differences between the variants. They were probably better fresh... Pours rather clear, dark amber, small white foam. Smell is very thick, but not intense. Taste is bitter, some pine - more than the cluster variant - and a mild orange-character. Aromatic, almost yeasty ending. Original score of 3.7 will be kept since it was fresh than, but it’s fun to see how I rated this one 3.6 at my tasting. not too far off !
2.7 Bottle from The Grove, Huddersfield. Lumpy, dark amber. Thick, off white head. Aroma is heady sweet malt, black currant too. Quite fusty and sickly. Palate is sickly too. Long clacky finish. Not good.
3.3 Draught at Delirium Brussels. Deep, cloudy orange with a fine, high head. Hoppy nsoe, grass, peaches, orange, earth. A bit dirty. Sweet malt in the back. Very fruity flavor, orange, peach, earth, hay, bread. Sweet and jammy. Rich body. This hop is a bit bland, not my favorite.
3.3 33cl bottle. huge foamy head. sweet herbal and malty, weak bitternes (35 ibu). some alcohol bite too. really not bad considering its low bitternes.
3.3 33 cl bottle. Pours hazy orange color with a large head. Aroma of nettle, hay, hops, some pine and malts. Flavor of grape fruits, grass, some goose berries, mild apricot notes and some hops. Medium carbonation, bitter sweetish fruity palate. A bit stuffy. 3414
3.3 Bottle from Beer Cartel. Slightly murky amber/orange, grassy, pine, earthy/loamy, quite tangy on palate, medium bitterness, dry finish. Ok.
3.5 0,33 bottle, Brewdog Online Store. Poured opalescent amber with a medium creamy tan head. Moderated aroma of tropical fruits, bublegum, fig and grass, pine. Flavor opens with malts, after some slips the fruity yeasts arrive. The bitterness level is lower than expected with pine and grass.
3.5 33cl bottle @ home, from Geers Oostakker; side-by-side tasting with 4 others; pours hazy orange with big white head; low carbo; smell is wood, fruity; taste is quite bitter, oily and dry. Nice beer!
3.7 Bottle from Vino Wines. Muddy orange with large open structured off-white head. Loads of funk on the nose, some malt, ripe pineapple. Dryish palate but full mouthfeel. Dry funky end. Something slightly cloying all said, but a heady delight.
3.7 Tap. Moderate roasted and caramel for the malt, pine for the hops, light sweat for the yeast, with notes of light dried fruit like peaches and apricot. Head is average size, creamy, swirly tan with god lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is opaque light brown, like chocolate milk. Flavor starts faintly sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, watery with a carbonation between soft and lively. Other than the completely polluted look of this beer I understand I got the bottom of the barrel) this IPA is pretty standard fair.
3.5 bottle a amber dark golden yellow colored beer with a white head aroma malts spicy earthy some fruits en hops flavor malts spicy some earthy citrus fruits and bitter hops
3.3 Poured on tap in a flight of other mikkeller beers.. hazy Amber body lacy off white head..bready low bitterness malty..goes excellent I mean excellent with fresh fish dip!
2.6 Possible new 2013 series? Hazy amber, not a lot going on in the nose, some blackcurrant maybe, some bready/hay. Tastes a bit thin, tastes like a 5%er. Not a lot to like.
3.6 from Erzbierschof - pours a hazy amber-orange beer with no foam left; aroma of blood oranges dominates; a good malt backbone, some astringency, fairly bitter with more hoppy notes of bitter oranges in the finish
3.6 Ipa ambrata. Single hop willamette. Luppolo da aroma, infatti la birra e' ben equilibrata tra dolcezza del malto e amaro. Ottima
2.6 Bottled@Cask Pub & Kitchen, London. Orangeish amber hazy colour with a slightly off-white head. Aroma is fruits, mild sweet malts, wood, resin and some mild metallic notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, nectary with some caramel and mild metallic notes. The metallicness shows up quite evidently as the beer gets warmer.
3.2 ivory white head that disappears fast with some lacing. dark caramel clear colour. aroma is sweet, hop resin and nutty, reminds me of hazelnut. taste is bitter, resin with a long bitter aftertaste. medium carbonation. bottle 33 cl / notes from backlog
3.2 33cl Bottle. Blind tasting of all 19 Mikkeller Hop Series beers. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: amber beer, stable white head. Nose: quite bitter, little fruit noticeable. Taste: less hoppy, rather dry, though one off the lesser from the Series. Update TAP at Delirium Brussels, shared with Mathieu87. Labeled as "Mikkeller Single Willamette" so I’m not sure if it’s the same entry or not... APPEARANCE: dark blond clouded beer, nice stable off white head. NOSE: hoppy, fresh, little peppery, not much in total though. TASTE: heavy hoppy aftertaste, though not really balanced. Not much nose, taste is not bad. Score was not different
4.2 Sampled as part of a hop education class. Very mild hop flavor, with mild bitterness. The beer itself has a nice malt backbone.
3.8 Bottle. Aroma of nuts, caramel and hay. Slightly unclear golden brown colour with beige head. Biitersweet flavour according to aroma with some melon and a long lasting dry and pleasant finish. Some liquorice in the aftertaste.
IBU 35.
4.0 Taste is mature fruit. Taste is more mature fruit over to mature melon. (From tasting of all Hop series Cardinal 11. March)
3.2 Bottle, january 12th 2013. Hazy amber body, creamy offwhite head. Hoppy aroma, fresh fruits, together with caramel and hay. Taste of bread, caramel, pine and peach. Low bitterness, sweet malty finish with a subtle fruit taste.
