Mikkeller HUES

Mikkeller HUES

This spontaneous fermented beer has been aged in Hungarian oak barrels and appears with a light amber color with almost no head.

The aroma is huge and very vinous. A clear impression of oxidized apples is the first thing that hits you, which made us think of heavy old fashioned British apple ciders. The aroma also reveals the wooden notes from the barrels along with some burned toffee and spices like Star anise.

It has a very heavy acidic profile at first, one that quickly slides into a smooth kind of sweetness. We taste green apples, carambola and very young green grapes. It has a certain lactic acidic touch and a creamy dry finish that lasts forever and bares the green impressions through.

Some mild creamy blue cheese on roasted rye bread would work great due to both the lactic and acidity impressions in this beer.

3.7 Lovely velvet hay/farmhouse funk, solid gueze, balanced towards medium-high lactic, acidic acid, vinous oak, citrus and rotten fruit.
4.2 Vintage 2014. Half champagne bottle.
4.0 Bottle at home. 2014 vintage. Has a slightly hazy orange amber colour with a small off-white head. Aroma of apple cider vinegar, tea, spices, apricots, rowan berries, oak, forest floor and barn yard. Sour flavor of vinegar, lime and barn yard but the ending is sweeter with apricots and sugared tea. Has slick and sparkly mouth feel, medium bodied, and light bitterness. A both acidic and sweet gueuze. Well-balanced.

3.8 375ml cork and cage bottle at home in Richmond as ’Mikkeller HUES’, 5%, 2014 vintage. Pours a brilliant amber orange, sparkling with a diminishing beige head. Aroma is plastic, polished leather, varnish, baby food, and apricot. Touch acetic. Body is smooth with tingly carbonation. Taste is red grape, lime, plum, plastic, soured green apple. Not much acidity or tartness but a bit tannic and dry. Light sherry. Very drinkable and enjoyable. Not as vibrant or as complex as the gueuzes that come out of Belgium, but nice in its own right.
3.5 Dumpfer Geruch. Trockener, mild säuerlicher Antrunk. Geringe Würzigkeit, dann holziger etwas dumpf bleibend, der Tiefgang fehlt. Süffig und nett aber zu. 10/11/10/11/11/11
3.7 Sampled from 0.375 l bottle. Clear, golden amber with a white head. Sourish-fruity, quite funky aroma of lemon, gooseberry, green apples, barnyard and oak. Moderately sour, quite fruity, very funky and dusty taste of lemon, gooseberry, green apples, barnyard and oak, followed by a medium long, moderately tart and rather woody-dry finish. Medium body, moderately astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very nice!

4.3 2014 vintage. Gold color. Off white head that's quickly gone. Aroma of orange marmalade, glazed donut, little funky, citrus peel rind, some cinnamon spice. Taste is sharp and tart, lemon citrus, subtle earthy funk. Dry as a bone. So good. Medium to high carbonation, champagne like. Medium body. She's a beaut.

3.8 375 ml bottle. Pours a slightly veiled golden with a short lived white head. Aroma is sour, vinegar, fruit, red grapes. Flavor is rose wine, white grapes, pepper. Finish is sour, vinegar, wood. Lingering sour, fruit, funky, oldish. Light to medium body, average carbonation.
3.9 2016/06/04 - Pours a clear medium amber colour with a thin head that immediately vanishes. Aroma is green apple, woody notes, barnyard, toffee and light burnt rubber. Taste is tart apple, wood, toffee, barnyard and hay. Mouthfeel is medium with effervescent carbonation and a crisp, drying, tart finish. Sharp, simple and delicious.

3.6 375 ml flaske fra 2014. Klar oransje-gyllen kropp uten skum. Vinøs og bærpreget aroma med innslag av appelsinmarmelade. Frisk syrlighet med fin smak av grapefrukt. God overgang til corn flakes. God fylde og passende snerpete munnfølelse. Snadder på brygga i sola.

4.2 At cellar cleanup tasting at deanso’s. Vintage 2014. Smooth, grapes, minerals. Very nice /// Bottle courtesy of Maakun shared at Maakun’s. Dark golden with little ring of greyish bubbles. Grapes, white wine, horse barn hay, a sporadic (over)ripe strawberry, dried apricots, subtle wood tones, subtle cobwebs, wild yeast, herbal notes such as cardemom, cinnamon, vanilla. Medium sour, mild spices, subtle complex long bitter finish, minerallike saltiness. Medium body, smoothened almost oily minerallike texture. Faint carbo fizziness. Pretty nice!
3.9 Bottle shared at home. Clear dark golden with short lasting white head that leaves a small ring. Quite fruity with white grapes and apple, some malts, soft lactic notes, light funk and hay with a bit of dry cellar too but in a soft way not the massive dry cobwebs some gueuzes have. Vanilla and some berry pits, hint of cinnamon. Light sweet and under medium sour. Medium bodied with soft fine carbonation. Surprisingly good.
3.7 pours unclear light gold with a small white cap offering some retention and lacing. golden delicious apples, meaty orcharness - tasty granny smiths as well, toasted woodsiness, old rag, spent grassy hops, medium toasted wheat, lemon and lime-driven acidity, pepper. moderate carbonation, light body - oily; dry and tart herbal-grassy finish. more than decent gueuze, slightly lacking in complexity tho.
3.5 clear yellow, small white to offwhite head. Nice leathery sourish aroma, mostly reminds me of belgian lambic but i also get some crazier stuff in there. notes resembling tart spanish apple cider, woody notes hide in the leather. flavor is extremely sour and dry and tart. loads of wood, quite acidic, very close to the border where things get overly phenolic. I have this feeling that this beer is somewhat off what they were aiming for, that it just went crazy, but it is interesting and a treat nevertheless.
3.7 37.5 bottle courtesy of and shared with Kermis. Thin white head. Funky aroma. Hazy light amber pour.
