3.8Can from Brewcraft at home - along with Cascade, Citra, Mosaic. This one in the middle clarity-wise, very similar to Mosaic. Dull golden. Seems like it could be more fresh than the others but who knows. Sudsy white head. Aroma is rounder than the others and probably my favorite with the Mosiac - tart tropical fruit with earthy spice and pine. Similar to Mosaic but more pepper and spice. Taste is pine bitterness with spicy earthiness. Boozy burn with lasting bitter bite.
4.30.33l can. Hazy orange body with a white head. Aroma and taste of sugar syrup, mango, pine, resin and grapefruit. Awesome.
4.1Can. Piney lemony aroma and taste. Deep full palate bitterness. Easy and drinkable a little dankness. Pretty cool but still the cascade is better.
4.010 oz draft at the probably the world’s smallest beer bar, Beer Cargo, in Taipei! Appearance of this massive Imperial IPA is a hazy golden orange hue, topped with generous and regenerating white froth, which releases an big aroma bouquet perfumed with hoppy floral, grass, and predominantly citrus notes. Guzzling it down, the taste starts of sweet and full of citrus fruits, mainly grapefruit, and then the sweetness fades into an eye-poppingly intense bitterness, which lasts throughout the long lingering finish. In the mouth, this brew has a nice medium bodied feel to it, aided by a decent level of carbonation which never lets you forget its presence. Great brew!
3.6Can at Craft Room, thanks Trolleo and Luka D.! Amber, white head. Dry malty aromas, some herbs, onion, fruit, okay. Herbal-citric light notes ending in bitterness, and bubblegum really. Too much dry grainy bitterness, otherwise excellent.
3.6Bottle sample from notes. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have pale toasted malts, grapefruit citrus, dank, resiny hops, light catty notes, caramel, decent enough for a Mikkeller IPA.
3.8Taster from can at Kultainen Apina, Finland. Hazyish amber. Nose is resin, caramel, sticky sweet. Tastes sweet fruity, pineapple, citrus, tropical fruits.
4.233cl can at home from De Caigny, Belgium. Nose is tropical fruits. Body is hazy amber copper, head is big, offwhite, rocky, mostly lasting, good lacing. Aroma is tropical fruits, pine resin, honey, tea, soap, grapefruit. Medium sweet, light to medium bitter, light fruity citric sour. Finish is long lasting hoppy fruity medium bittersweet. Full body, slick texture, medium carbonation. Quite easy, quite refreshing, strong flavor, very tasty, perfectly balanced, great one.
3.8Hatalmas, örökké tartó hab, félbarna szín. Déligyümölcsös, fenyős illat. Déligyümölcsös, fenyős, kissé földes ízek. Testes, erősen szénsavas, erősen keserű. Jól összerakott hardcore IPA.
4.5From a can bought at Bierhalle Deconinck. One of countless Mikkeller IPAs with a not very inspired but all the more clear name: an imperial IPA with Simcoe, this cannot go wrong... Thickly ’membranous’ lacing, irregular, moussy, slightly greyish white, stable head over a hazy, deep, pure and warm orange blonde beer. Strong aroma (reaching my nostrils from half a yard away), classic fresh IIPA, with impressions of pink grapefruit flesh, raw garlic, red onion (obviously very Simcoe indeed), sweet red curry, biscuit, pine resin, mandarin juice, withering basil leaves, calvados, paprika, dried mango cubes, unripe banana, a faint hint of sewer water (fading away quickly, fortunately) and something very vaguely, subtly ’intoxicating’ gasoline-like though this is likely a fusel alcohol effect. Vividly fruity onset, mildly tropical in ’colour’ with impressions of green banana, dried mango, slight lychee and a lot of blood orange, sweetish with a balancing sourish edge, vaguely salty hoppiness already noticeable at the start but subtly so (more subtle than in many other IPAs of this potency, in fact), spritzy carbo but not overcarbonated, full and oily, almost lightly glueish body. Lovely, creamy, biscuity and caramelly malt sweet backbone supports a growing hop intensity, debouching into a lush, big retronasal ’cloud’ of Simcoe fragrance, a ton of fresh grapefruit juice with that undeniable sweet onion accent, red curry spicing and a slight ’pineyness’, resinous and very firmly bittering in the mouth, very grapefruity and tonic water-like, long but not as long as I’ve seen in some more ’over the top’ DIPAs and IIPAs and still leaving a narrow opening for the lovely biscuity malt sweetness to seep through. Spicy, very aromatic, bold and almost overwhelming, yet still elegant ending, in all, reinforced by a potent, whisky-like alcohol heat trying to fight the Simcoe for dominance but just not achieving that - luckily. A real balancing act in terms of alcohol presence and almost intimidating hop bitterness (both admittedly typical for the style), this one, but somehow it remains on the ’good’ side, that is to say: though both the alcohol and the hop bitterness are unsurprisingly prominent in the finish, neither of them overrules the malt core completely, so that everything falls into one piece with the Simcoe obviously attracting the bulk of the attention. Elegant example of high standard, highly recommendable if you like big, fruity, juicy DIPAs - and particularly recommendable if you like Simcoe, because this beautiful and colourful hop variety (one of my personal favorites) is really the star of the show here, I rarely came across it in such a degree of vibrant splendidness. Very well done, it’s been a while since I had a Mikkeller but this brand rarely disappoints - yet even then, this is among the finest DIPAs I had so far from Europe (or from anywhere for that matter). Kudos!
3.9W nosie średnio/wyraźnie intensywnie: pełno słodkiej żywicy i nut leśnych, resztę dopełnia słodko-gorzki grapefruit. Świetna DIPA, gdyby lekko zejść z woltażu i całkowicie ukryć alko, byłaby idealna imperialna IPA. Puszka do 15.11.2017
3.633 cl. bottle @ Home.
Aroma: not very intense aromas of tropical fruits, passion fruit, mango, grapefruit, pine, resin, citrus and hints of alcohol, caramel and malts.
Appearance: quite deep golden-honey color with much above average head thickness. Off-white head foam made of very tiny bubbles. Excellent retention, very much above average. Medium-High Brussels’ lacing. A very little bit of hazyness, almost clear.
Taste: low-to-medium sweetness, medium-high bitterness, no sourness. Flavors of tropical fruits, passion fruit, grapefruit, pine, resin, citrus, caramel, some hints of wine, porto wine.
Palate: medium body, oily texture, above average carbonation, very long dry bitter finish of pine, citrus, resin, tropical fruits, some porto wine overtones. Very well hidden alcohol. Very well balanced at first, and high bitterness at the end.
Overall: Very pretty color and excellent appearance, head thickness and retention. Not very intense aromas but very good and lingering flavors of pine, citrus, tropical frutis, mango, passion fruit, resin, with hints of wine, porto wine. Very good beer.
3.8330ml can from Vinmonopolet Langnes. Near-clear orange-gold body. Firm white head leaving lacing rings down the glass. Tropical fruity nose. mid-dry. Rather solid taste profile of citrus drops and passion fruits. Well hopped tail, warming. Full bodied. Good drinking on a Friday eve (Tromsø 10.03.2017).
4.4330 ml. can. BBF 15/11/17. Near clear bright orange, creamy nearly off-white head. Nose is creamy base, some yeast with pine resin, caramel, lightly herbal, yeasty grapefruit peal. Taste is yeasty upfront; caramel, malty onion, grapefruit peel, orange peel, mandarin, sugar, interesting as others of the series, malty oily caramel, mandarin, malt mix with thick grapefruit peel, some slightly sweet apricot, dried stone fruit, interesting malt + hop combo, slightly herbal, exotic sugar, faint dried kiwi, herbal pine, faint leaf hops, raisin, sweet red grape,... Body is thicker than usual malt, creamy yeast, hop milkshake,... Interesting but tasty brew, unusual but intriguing. Very thick brew, interesting mix of big malt, yeast with lots of hops, interplay of near sweetness & USA hops (Simcoe I presume). Really grew on me, classy very nice, very thick brew.
4.5Fresh bb11/2017, Geers beeline from Proef without a DK detour I presume. Any case: still radiant. Probably the smoothest IIPA I’ve had the pleasure of solo-enjoying in scarily few gulps. Including Heady Topper. Was never a hardcore Simcoe fan, finding it catty like old lemongrass, but seeing it in such splendorous Single Hop action, maybe some revisiting is in order. -nose of ripe actual mango&passionfruits swearing through their skins, invitingly sweet. Ideally matched by a touch of oats for full, pre-NEIPA "cloudy"-yet-smooth mouthfeel. Basically drinks like fresh exotic fruit pulp&peel juice, freshly infused for balance with pine tree sap. Just the slightest hint of abv to make you question how that can went down so fast. "Product of Belgium"...- keep mailing them in, Mikkel!
3.7Tym razem bardziej żywiczno-grejfprutowo, z zestową goryczką i słodkimi akcentami owoców tropikalnych. Jest świetnie, ale o dziwo lepiej wypadło Cascade i Mosaic.
3.3Boks 330ml fra Vinmonopolet Tromsø - Langnes. Gyldenbrun. Lett uklar. Lavt tett skum som daler sakte. Aroma av plommer. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken appelsin & fersken. Tørr syrlig ettersmak.
3.7Can shared with JMD at HNB 16.02.17. Hazy orange. Dense off-white head and lacing. Aroma of oranges, bitter orange marmalade, fresh pine and bitter grapefruit. Similar taste, balanced with pale malt, bitterness and alcohol. Citrus bitterness is lingering on.
3.8Can at home. Pours a clearish golden with an off-white head. Quite sweet with a high bitterness, especially towards the end. Aromas of sprucey hops with hints of alcohol. Medium to full bodied. Medium carbonation. Long very bitter finish.
2.8Cloudy bronze. Big, fluffy head. Piney aroma. Taste is grass, malt, marmalade, but overall imbalanced.
3.5Can from Vinmonopolet’s BU. Golden to amber body. Frothy, white head. Grapefruit, resin, pine flavour. Bitter. Herbal bitterness. Medium body and carbonation.
2.4Draught @ C4, Odense. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Dusty Sweet caramel and pine. Basement, alcohol and paperbag. Poor condition.
3.3Lys brun lett tåkete med lavt hvitt skum. Lett fruktig lukt. Middels fylde. Tung fruktig smak, middels bitterhet.
2.4330ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber, off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt. Taste is rather muddled crystal malt, marmalade, simcoe fruit. Rather muddled, syrupy, lacking balance of character. Really didn’t enjoy this.
3.7Tap at Mikkeller Bangkok. Poured a hazy medium amber with a thin white head and some broken lace. The aroma is tropical fruit, alcohol. The flavour is moderate bitter with a smooth rich woody resinous hoppy citrus palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A DIPA with the alcohol nicely in the background.
4.5Fett. Mehr wär gut 😉. 0,33?45DKK BOTTLE from the MIKKELLER BOTTLE SHOP in Kopenhagen.Dose : 8/4/9/4/18 OLD SCHOOL US DIPA MaltPineDampf, lasziv verHoneyÖlTraubt✨😀 in Szene gesetzt. 4.4Bottle. Pours golden with a frothy white head. Quite malty aroma, sugar, honey, caramel, also some grapefruit and berries. Amazing palate, thick and just perfectly carbonated. Long bitter and sweet finish. Perfectly balanced flavour, sugar, grapefruit, peach. I can drink this forever, so good.
3.9Clear amber, big white froth. Juicy aroma, passionfruit and peach, light pine. Similar flavour with sweet caramely backing and smooth piney bitterness, nicely balanced sweetness. Creamy mouthfeel and very drinkable.
