3.4Bottle (from beergium.com). Pours brown with beige head. Aroma is sweet and sour, raspberries. Flavor is sour, oak, raspberries, wine, and cellar. Alcohol is rather well covered. Overall: ok.
3.7Clear dark reddish-inflected mahogany, tan head that almost immediately disappeared. Oily look. Grape must, leather, molasses, deeply earthy, quite a bit of funk. More than moderately sour, sticky, oily sweetness. Heavier body, very little effervescence. Extremely long finish. Alcohol is reasonably muted. Very unique, grew on me throughout the course of the bottle. Very unbalanced.
2.4375ml bottle @martjoobolut’s, thanks. Murky copper color. Medium size, pinky-brown head, stays. Milky, sharp raspberry, punch in the face of alcohol and sweet sugar in aroma. Sour raspberry, twiggy, acidic taste. Acidic mouthfeel. I have no idea what I’m drinking.
3.3Appearance: muddy dark brown, with a thick and creamy tan head that shrinks quickly to a thick collar and thin cap. Aroma: huge aroma that changes as it warms; starts full of treacle, toffee, molasses, raisins, plums, and prunes; then it moves into sour territory with prominent balsamic and white vinegar notes over raspberry and stone fruit. Finish: aggressively tart and sour up front, with strong, woody balsamic and raspberry notes; there’s an undertone of dark bitter chocolate and fruitcake long lasting tart and sour, drying with some rising woody notes. Notes: Wouldn’t say I loved it, but I’m so glad to have tried it. A complex and creative beer. Beerthday 2015.
2.5375ml bottle - thanks martjoobolut!
Ugh, what a mess in the aroma, there’s some raspberry, but it’s otherwise an sugary acidic mess. Taste not much better, sweet, sour, raspberry, lots of stuff totally not integrating with each other at all. But at least it’s not actually bad. This is prog-rock in the beer scene - sometimes it rocks, sometimes it sucks. This time, it sucks. The fruity berry sharpness is the best bit.
3.6Brown beer with a reddish tinge, small tan head. Nose is raspberry sweetness, chocolate and some roast. Flavor is raspberry tart and some white wine notes. Finishes with roasty notes plus milk chocolate, tartness, some wood and dry notes. Weird one.
3.9Couleur rouge aux reflets bruns avec une tete respectable. Explosions de framboisr, bois, vineux. Tres interessante mais ce n’est pas une quadrupel plus un belgian strong ale!
3.6pours cloudy light brown, red tint, with a small reviving light beige head, some particles, perhaps raspberry puréed chunks, minimal lacing. raspberries-plenty, other berries - borderline rotten, strong vinous character if not a tad overdone - lots of tannins; red grapes, olives - kalamatas; light sweetness - barley sugars; light citric/lactic acidity, very spicy too. average belgian carbonation - slightly foamy, medium body, very tannic and grassy-spicy finish. was anticipating a quad which seems far-fetched. anyhow, this is an interestingly unique boozy belgian strong ale with strong perfumey raspberry and winey flavors.
4.6375cl bottle served in a snifter. Pours dark brown and very cloudy with hints of garnet and a short-lived off white head. Aroma is oaky red wine, sharp red fruits with a hint of dark chocolate. Aroma is perfectly balanced with sweetness from the chocolate, sharpness from the raspberries, earthy oakiness from the wine barrels and a typically nourishing Belgian ABT base. One of the best Mikkellers I have tried which is high praise indeed.
3.5Poured from bottle into snifter. Pours a brown with some red notes, thick head with soft pink color, almost like melted raspberry ice cream. Aroma - lots of raspberry with some chocolate underneath. Taste - definitely some raspberry, but lots of funk and medium low tartness. Mouthfeel is almost gritty.
3.5Bottle shared with BBGTC. Aroma is heavy raspberries, some bitter grassy notes and hints of wood and leather. Taste is very special. Notes of wood, red wine, raspberries, malts and leather. Medium body and co2 levels.
3.6Bottle, shared with BBGTC. Pours a dark brown murky body with a medium off-white head. Nose is raspberries, wood, brown sugar, dark berries, caramel, grains and hints of alcohol, licorice and deep malty notes. Taste is raspberries, wood, red wine, grape peel, dark berries, licorice and hints of caramel and alcohol in the back. Medium body, medium to high carbonation, dry finish. Not bad at all, the combo of raspberries in a sweet quad which has dried out from the barrel aging quite a bit.
4.337,5cl bottle at home. Transparent dark reddish brown colour, red wine like too, with a beige creamy head. Incredibly fruity raspberry nose along with caramel malty creaminess and cask originated vanilla. Taste is deep and complex with red wine fruitiness and warmth together with white wine dryness and astringency coming through the raspberries nicely, along with roasted, creamy soft and sweet malted tones reminiscent of a Belgian abbey quad. Lingering raspberry fruity finish, dry from the tannins of the wine. Medium body (minor letdown), medium carbonation and dry mouthfeel. Another great experimental brew by Mikkeller!
3.6375ml shared by Jason, thanks! Pours cherry coke red brown with a beige head. Aroma is brown bread, acetic, raspberry. Flavor follows. Not so much acetic, but light brown bread, raspberry. A touch of mold, chocolate, then more raspberry in the finish. Moldy earth flavor keeps this from being really good.
4.0375 ml, bottled. Pours dark ruby with a small white head. Aroma: Spices, berries, raspberries. Wood. Taste: Medium sweet, some acidity. Bitter. Palate: Medium body, semi-dry. Excellent. @Stockholm 21.12.2014.
4.9Gorgeous raspberry flavor, the taste of a wine barrel. A lot of raspberry, sour, sweet, very fragrant and delicious! On the quad is not very similar, but great
4.0Tasted at the Triple Rock Sour and Barrel Aged Fest on 2/10/2013. This quad pours a medium brown color. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is malty, sweet and raspberry. A medium bodied quad. The malts are fruity and sweet, brown sugar and raspberry. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. Kind of funky and tart, but there is some sweetness and nice raspberry flavors as well. This is a nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
3.4Bottle: Murky brown, creamy khaki & bubbly head on top. Aroma of raspberry pound cake & raspberry Tootsie Pops. Some caramel drizzle, both lightly sweet & lightly tart. Fruity. Hint of red wine grapes. Flavor is a little boozy & vinous with notes of wood, red grapes, sharp raspberry skin acidity that fades into a sweet grape & caramel finish. Hints of vanilla, cherry, & a touch of lactic acid. Boozy, warming wine finish.
3.8Deep dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is a big hit of raspberries, followed by a little grape, prunes, figs and brown sugar. Full bodied, slightly sticky mouthfeel, lightly tart on the palate with a lightly warming fruity finish. Taste is raspberries, berry pie, prunes, figs, caramel, red wine, white grapes. Delicious
3.8bottle - from the beergeek stall at slunce ve skle 2013. somewhere between red and brown with a thin sliver of a head; plenty of raspberry in the aroma, white grape, lacquered floorboards; some tart forest fruit flavours, hints of brown sugar, oak, some alcohol burn with tart raspberry as compensation
3.9Bottle. Aroma raspberry, quite intense, fresh, at the same time some overripe fruits. Hazy brown colour with floaties. Taste is fruity, moderate sourness surprises you after a moment. Raspberries noticeable. Sweetness in the background, dark beer character hidden. Very good beer, although IMO most interesting for its uniqueness.
4.0Bottle shared at Behind The Hills 2014 Autumn Edition. Hazy brown color with medium beige head. Ripe raspberries, red vine. Taste, ripe raspberries, red vine, plums, cherries. Tasty.
3.8Fľaša. Tmavšia hnedá farba, pena malá a hneď padla. Vôňa prezretých malín a sliviek, jemne alkohol. V chuti sladko-kyslá chuť malín a v pozadí opäť prezreté slivky. Pozadie veľmi dlhá kyslosť, s jemným alkoholovým nádychom. Krásne ovocné tóny. Telo stredne plné, stredná nasýtenosť. Na druhé napitie je to lepšie a lepšie.
3.6Bottle at Behind The Hills 2014 Autumn Edition. Pours hazy brown colo with floaters. Aroma of raspberries, plums, sweet. Taste is sourish, lightly sweet, raisins, raspberries, plums, red wine, cherry. Sourish fruity finish.
3.8Bottle from the hive. Pours black with tan (Crimson) head. Big raspberry vinegar nose. Can't place the taste, wine, vinegar, soft tart fruits. Special.
3.7Shared 12.7 oz. bottle poured to snifters, displaying a cloudy, dark brown color that showed maybe a touch of ruby highlighting at the base, with a frothy, tan layer of head foam that reduced down to a fairly persistent ring & film, and left some spots & strands of lacing. First impression was a noticeable hint of soy in the nose that disappeared as the beer breathed, then dark chocolate covered cherry, or in this case, raspberry, and some alcohol readiness. Medium bodied, with soft carbonation, the taste was initially dry, and continued with red wine notes, and cask bitterness & tannic astringency, as the alcohol got my attention, but remained somewhat in the background. Dryness followed through for the finale. Maybe a little age on the bottle, but interesting, and quite tasty.
2.6Bottle at SSAN V. Dirty brown pour full of chunks. Aroma of tons of old raspberries, medicinal raspberry, light winey notes. Taste is pretty harsh, boozy, old rotten raspberries, lots of red wine, oak, medicinal notes. Palate is rich, full bodied with light carbonation. Bleh.
4.0"Faaaaantastic aroma of raspberries and wine, with a little bit of sweet malt and yeast poking it’s head in there too. Slightly overcarbonated, but no hint of 10%. I think you are just so distracted by the awesome flavor, you don’t notice any alcohol. Fruit forward and sweet, but not overly so. Well done! 9/12 still really good the 2nd time around but well sweeter and boozier."
