Mikkeller / Prairie American Style

Mikkeller / Prairie American Style

American Style is an international collaboration between the godfather of all gypsy brewers, Mikkeller, and one of the new stars of the US tenant brewing scene, Prairie Artisan Ales. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Chase Healey journeyed to Flanders to brew this twist on an American-style IPA with Dirk Naudts at De Proefbrouwerij . Predictably, it’s loaded with West Coast hops. What you might not have guessed, though, is that it was fermented exclusively with a special strain of Brettanomyces claussenii that’s light on the funkiness, but really aromatic. It leaves behind an astoundingly well attenuated IPA, which means it’s good for drinkin’. A serious amount of West Coast hops are added to the whirlpool and as dry hops to compliment the tropical notes from the Brett.

3.0 Copper blond, white head. Nose of citrus, melon, vegetables, mint. Light body, lot of carbonation. Taste is similar, more bitterness from the end to the aftertaste.
1.6 Calling this an American IPA is totally misleading. And to say that it’s "light on the funkiness" is also misleading. If you don’t like saisons, but do like hoppy IPA’s, this is a waste of your money (and it’s not cheap!).
4.0 Bottle... Poured golden amber with a nice forming head. Brett IPAs are starting to hit their stride and I’m getting into them. Most for me have been failures but when one comes around like American Style they nail it. Bitterness and grassy hop with full mouthfeel and subtly funky bits of yeast spice. I wish I had another bottle to see how this develops.
3.2 Tester. Erbierschof Tab. Riecht sehr urchig, manche meinen Söilistall. Sehr hopfig-spritziges Bier, erfrischend aber stark.
4.0 draught@Erzbierschof - cloudy dark orange beer with a long lasting pale beige foam; nice lace; pretty fair hoppy aroma of orange peel, tangerines; full-bodied, some sweetness, assertive and decentlly bitter, some residual sweetness, long fruity hoppy finish; light estery
3.6 Bomber, pours a light straw color with a fluffy, pillowy head, taste is the funk that you’d expect from the Brett yeast, but since I enjoy farmhouse ales, I really enjoyed it. The funk of the Brett yeast really masks the IPA character that I expected, but not in an offensive way. I would buy this again.
3.7 Backlog rating. Keg at the King’s Arms tap takeover. It pours a clean golden color with a large white head. Aroma is fruity, hoppy, citrusy, with notes of biscuit, pine needles, mango. Taste is sweet fruity upfront with notes of ripe peaches and mango. Then turns more hoppy with bitter pine cones, grass. Herbs. Finishes quite dry and peppery/estery. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Liked it
3.6 Orange-brown color with nice head. Citrus and tropical hop fruitiness, but not too aggressive. Good bitterness and fruitiness in the taste, a bit of caramel. Smooth carbonation. Dry and a little bit funky towards the end.
3.9 750ml bottle .. . drops out the bottle a deep gold .. . the foam, you see, is ll over the glass, from the rocky head to the splattered lacing . .. great nose, clean brett and fresh hay .. . nice amount of the bitters .. . the palate is pretty light and finishes clean and spunky .. . nice easy going beer .. . . I don’t like the idea of bacteria in my yogurt so I mix it with hand sanitizer. It cuts down on the taste, but I sleep better at night.
3.4 Bottle from Venerables. Hazy golden coloured with a white head. Nose is citric, hoppy, light malty. Flavour is fairly bitter, hoppy, citric. Medium to high carbonation. Finish is fairly bitter. Don’t get the Brett. Average overall.
3.6 Draft at the Kings Arms - London. Pours clear orange-gold with a foamy white head. Lots of fruity hops in the aroma, some tropical, some citrusy. Medium sweet flavor with more juicy citrus, some rindy bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly bitter on the finish with pale bread sweetness, more fruity hops. Not bad overall.
3.1 Draught @ Real Gastropub, Honolulu. Cloudy light amber, thin head. Aroma is kind of overripe and stale. Kicks off boozy, almost barrelly, and the hops are still old, though the are more in the background here. Not sure I can get behind this, needs brighter hops.
3.5 Pours orange to yellow with a small head, aroma of fruits, mango, peach, flavor is bitter with malt, quite easy to sip and jug. Fresh and nice IPA
3.3 How: Bottle. Where: SBWF 2014. Appearance: Golden colour with an off-white head. Aroma: Tropical fruit, hops, malt, caramel, citrus. Body: Medium body and carbonation. Flavour: Citrus, caramel, alcohol, hops.
4.4 Bottle from Whole Foods in Redwood City, CA. Pours an orangey-pink. Aroma is guava, fermented strawberries, citrus, funk. Taste is dry fruits, guava, wood, rinds. A funky, dry, fruity, fermented, smooth and beautiful expression.
3.9 Tap - small foamy head, hazy medium orange copper color, big tropical fruit hop aroma and flavor, fair malt backbone, mild spice like complexity, excellent overall
3.7 Draft at Šoljica Cafe in central Belgrade, where else? Hazy golden color. Nice aroma of dusty overripe apricots and peaches. Taste is slightly funky, dusty, peppery stone fruit. Very tasty.
3.3 Thanks go out to Craft Shack for the bottle. A very pretty IPA; bright gold with a solid and long lasting head of foam. I get that Brett in the smell. Mixed with grapefruit, it gives me a tropical fruity nose. What worked in the smell seems to fall short for me in the taste. The grapefruit and Brett combo just doesn’t appeal to me taste wise. Dry, bitter, Brett..does Brett really need to infiltrate IPAs? I find it makes the beer, this beer, a chore to drink, and that doesn’t have anything to do with the abv. Nothing wrong with the mouth feel. This is not something I’d want to drink again...
3.7 Bottle shared at the Syb Pig in Boca. Poured into small snifters. Golden hazy copper with a thick fluffy head. Head lasted and laced. Aroma is fresh pine, wet cut grass, hay field, and slight brett funkiness. The taste is fresh piney hops, cut grass, tart lemon, slight citrus, and a well balanced malt. Finish is crisp and slight tart. Heavy carbonation and tingly mouth.
3.6 On tap at Ölhus Stockholm, Helsinki. Pours hazy amber with a little white head. The aroma displays citrus fruitiness, resinous pine and a touch of caramel. Taste is dry and medium to heavy bitter. Not much initial sweetness. Flavours include fresh fruits and pine. The palate is medium bodied, slightly sticky and a bit aggressive carbonation. Fairly strong for an IPA but still very drinkable.
3.7 Tap at Mikkeller SF. Floral nose with a hint of straw and barnyard along with a tinge of funk to suit. Flavors are similar, but not as loud as one might gather from the nose. Semi-surprisingly coming from these two guys. Still yum though!
3.9 On tap at Brewdog Stockholm, april 18th 2014. Hazy amber body with a small white head. Hoppy aroma of tangerine, grapefruit zest, light brett character. Taste is superdry bitter tropical fruits, very refreshing, with a light balancing malt presence. Dry woody aftertaste, an excellent brett ipa.
3.0 large bottle poured light amber with a decent head. Sweet malty aroma is followed by a more balance and hoppy flavor. Largely an APA. Somewhat thin body.
3.6 A slightly hazy dark orange body with a well-lasting white gead. Nose has nice notes of citrus fruits, resin and caramel. Taste has a smooth but assertive hoppy bitterness and a long bitter finish. Carbonation is average and the mouthfeel is on the richer side. A nice well balanced IPA with a well presented hop presence.
4.1 "Though called American style, definitely a different take on an american IPA. Fruity in a nice tropical sorta way. Good nose, opens up very well. Moderately bitter and lightly sweet. Dry, bretty finish after a hint of underlying funk. Cool beer from 2 cool brewers."
3.0 Smell of hops, basement. Hazy amber colour, tiny white head. Aroma of raisins, hops, alcohol, rum. Sweet with a faint bitterness. Flat carbon, oily texture.
2.9 On tap at Christian Firtal. Cloudy golden with a lasting white head. Aroma of citrus and pine, with a bit of diacetyl. Sweet citrus hoppy and malty flavour.
3.9 Draft. Pours hazy orange amber with an off white head. Bretty funky notes, peach, fresh grassy hops, and a balanced and refreshing finish. Good stuff.
3.9 Tapped at Hostinec Richtar Jakub in Bratislava/Slovakia. Overall a very tasty IPA, more citrusy if not a bit sour in aroma and taste. I love the west coast style IPAs and this one fulfilled my expectations.
3.8 From tap at Richtar Jakub. Clear golden color with small head. Intense fruity aroma. Flavor of apricot, honey. Balance towards bitterness which lingers in aftertaste.
