3.7750ml bottle @ Varjopikkujoulut
Pours dark brown with a smooth head. Aroma of ripe fruits, syrup, candi sugar, some roastiness and orange peel. Taste is smooth, sweetish and syrupy with some orange peel, syrup, ripe fruits and hints of roastiness. Finish is sweetish, slightly roasty and fruity with some syrup and toffee. Quite interesting, feels a bit more fruity than the other versions.
3.4750 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black colour with a small head. Aroma of sweet maltiness, grass, some herbal notes and orange peel. Flavour of salty licorice, strong orange peel notes, coriander, metallic notes, chocolate malts and some bitterness. Medium bodied and a dry spicy finish. Probably the fruitiest SLH so far.
3.875 cl bottle @ tiong. Bottled 28.08.2012, BBE 28.08.2018
Aroma has oranges and some licorice. Flavour has licorice, some alcohol, ash, tobacco and orange. Also some smoky whisky tones even though this is not a BA beer. Pleasant.
3.9Poured deep reddish brown with a beige head. Aroma of roast malt, fudge, red wine, milk chocolate. Medium to full body, flavour as the aroma, light coconut.
3.2750ml bottle, into snifter. Bottled Aug 2012. Black, small tan head. Aroma is pungent with sherry, fruit n nut chocolate, hazelnut. Body is medium, smooth, slightly foamy. Taste is molasses, spice, alcohol. Fine, a bit sharp and boozy for me.
4.0"A little spicier than I remember older vintages being. Smells at first of Christmas tree in a bottle. Super smooth though the alcohol shows as it warms. Pine, chocolate, dark fruit, molasses...really nice, as expected."
4.2A little late on the upload of this but here goes.
This was poured into a tulip and a snifter.
The appearance was basically the same in both glasses. Here’s the rest: there’s a dark brown close to black color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light lacing sticking around the sides of the glass.
The smell had a really nice Belgian spiciness intertwining itself in between some delicate chocolate sweetness even still letting in some light vanilla and some hot booze.
The taste was mainly sweet and spicy.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium to heavy. Yup, this one’s a sipper and the carbonation was fairly smooth.
Overall, mmm, nice Belgian Strong Ale worthy of having again but would probably just welcome the following year’s version just as much.
3.8Bottle at home. Pours black, rich, chocolatey, full of spice, caramel, dry roast.
3.3Backlog. Bottle from Systembolaget. While not a huge fan of the winter-seasonals, i still found this to be quite exciting.
3.4Bottled 750ml. Tnx anna & fatphil. Opaque black color, tiny off-white head. Roasted, a bit spiceyness in the nose. Medium-bodied. Toasted, spiceyness, some burned notes. Simplish but decent.
3.3Very Dark Opaque Brown With Shades of Red, Big Mocha Head, Decent Strings Of Lacing. Light Sweet Fruity Aroma. Taste about the same: fruity with light booze finish. Medium body, hides high ABV, 11%, well., Smooth and easy to drink. OK. At this point it seems that Mikkeller is slightly over rated.
3.5Bottle. Pours brown with a lightbrown head. Aroma is chocolate, raisins, caramel, spices. Taste is sweet and spicy. Medium body, medium carbonation, warming finish.
3.811 Jan 2014, bottle. brown with a slight cherry twinge, thick foamy head. nosed is slightly harsh alcohol, raisins, plums. med body and mildly fizzy. plums, rock candy, moderate alcohol, slightly winey, some milk chocolate. nice.
3.3750 ml bottle. Aroma consists of chocolate, dark fruit (plums, raisins), soy sauce, alcohol. Pours opaque muddy brown with a large tan head with excellent retention; leaves lace. Taste is sweet and savory, sour and meaty, oxidation, soy sauce. Heavy body crushing my tongue, velvety mouthfeel. Not my cup of tea right now, but a quality product.
3.4Pikkupullo reitattu. Kaatuu tulppaaniin tummanruskeana/mustana vaahdon ollessa pari sormen paksuinen, melko hitaasti katoava ja vahvaa pitsiä jättävä. Haju poikkeaa melko lailla muista pukin pikku apureista. Viinikumiakin saattaa tuntua.
3.7750mL bottle, over a year old. Almost black beer with a hansom, big and brown head. The nose is roasted, some salt liquirice and dark dried fruits, plums, spices, hint of overcooked bananas and warm of alcohol. Quite complex and succesfully aroma. Taste of salt liquirice, dark fruits and some cellar. Clearly spicy taste and they are quite strong but smooth and balanced. Only medium bodied, low and smooth carbonation. Quite a mess but still it works at some level.
3.228.12.2013, 0,75l bottle @ home:
Big brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly dry and boozy, oak, spices, grass, dark malts, cocoa, burnt coffee. Taste is slightly dry boozy, dark malts, oak, alcohol, spices, grass, chocolate, dark sugar. Longlasting mild bitterness. Fair enough.
4.3Pours a cloudy dark brown with an average creamy brown head. Aroma is rich maltiness, dark fruity esters(raisins, plums, and cherries are most prominent), some mildy spicy phenols, caramel, alcohol, and a bit perfumey. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, dark dried fruits (raisins, prunes, plums.), warming alcohol, caramel, and dark candy sugar.
4.2Pours an almost opaque dark brown with a frothy brown head and good lacing. Aroma of Belgian yeast, dark dried fruits, chocolate, caramel and candi sugar. Taste is dark dried fruits(plums, dates and figs), alcohol, caramel, caramelized sugar and a light bit of sugar. Finish had a warm alcohol finish with a good hop bite... Excellent Belgian dark strong and wicked Christmas dinner beer.
3.4Poured from a bottle. Dark brown color, medium frothy head. Sweet candy malt smell. Light malt body with pepper and mineral finish.
4.2Bottle from Good Spirits Co., Glasgow. Pours very dark brown with a thin tan head, good lacing. Aromas of chocolate, brown sugar, dark fruits, roasted and booze on the nose. In the mouth I get more chocolate, spices, caramel and brown sugar but quite a bit of booziness and less of the fruit. Nice medium sweetness and a pleasant finish with the choc and caramel. Like this, shame they?ve not quite balanced the booze so well.
4.02012 ver. Bottle.
Smells whip cream. Milk. Butter on fruit cake.
Very boozy but not as strong as when it first came out last year. One year on it has taken a lot of the sharp alcohol taste off it; still a bit of heat. Great mouthfeel. Creamy and thick.
4.0Bottle at home, 2013 Christmas party. Dark brown pour, thin white head. Plums and burnt sugar on the nose, light spices and orange, then a hint of yeast. Good flavour, rich mouthfeel, sweet finish. Lovely.
4.2From tap at The Bishop Arms in Copenhagen. Small glass served at the right drinking temperature. Coal black body with a dark red shade. Low head, dotted spots to the glassware. Dark malty aromas joined by a nice touch of Christmas spices. Rich Yuletide taste of anise, coffee, and chocolate on a moderate roasted backbone. Long bittersweet tail tingled with alcohol warmth. Great stuff that fits the holiday season. Enjoyed in a relaxing atmosphere. I’ve always liked visiting this place and even placed one of my books in their library. Thanks (Copenhagen 09.12.2013).
3.9pours dark opaque plum. lots of toffee, caramel, cherries, plums, and burnt sugar. slightly sweet and a creamy body. hell yeah!
3.9Pours a dark brown beer with a good tan head. Smells coffee, chocolate and roasty. Tastes coffee, chocolate and roasted. Average carbo, medium body and a sticky texture.
3.7Well, let’s see how the leftovers from last Christmas tastes like. 75 cl. bottle poured in to a Trappist glass. Dark brown colour bordering black with a small, dense tanned head. Sweet aroma with dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, roasted, chocolate, "Christmas spices", some banana. A boozy hint. Taste is sweet. Full body, creamy to thick texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes sweet with chocolate, roasted malts and spices. More booze. A rich, juicy Christmas beer - however, the booziness is a bit of a let down.
3.9Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; dark black pour with thin tan head, dark fruit aroma, taste has chocolate really smooth tasting also has dried dark fruits and a slight hint of roast.
