3.2 Golden amber-orange, off white frothy head, lacing with great stickiness. Floral, mild caramel, mild burnt malt, alcohol, aroma and flavors. Full bodied, creamy texture, high hop bitterness.
3.9 330ml bottle pours a golden orangeish color with a big white head that retains well and leaves some thin spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is fruity with citrus hops and lightly toasted malts. Taste is slightly fruity with a solid malt background with a bold citrus hop bitterness. Medium body and lively carbonation. A tasty IPA that is highly recommended to try.
3.2 330mL bottle, enjoy by 22/12/11. Light green label. Light copper color, thin light tan head. Dark orange label. Aroma is light herbal. Taste is herbal and of autumn leaves. Fruity finish.
3.8 On tap at Night after Monsters. Pours an orange gold with a small off white head with spotty lacing. The aroma is floral hops and grapefruit. Medium mouthfeel with citrus and resin with a nice lingering strong hop bite finish. A very good IPA from Mikkeller.
3.2 Name: East Kent Golding Single Hop Date: June 01, 2010 Mode: Draft Source: Taco Mac, Fred Appearance: cloudy orange, creamy off white head, sticky lace Aroma: sweet fruity aroma with a nice woody pine aroma Flavor: sweet malt flavor, nice growing fruityness, hint of citrus, lots of earthy woodyness, long bitter finish Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 13/20 Rating: 3.2/5.0 Drinkability: 8/10 Score: **+ /4
3.3 Unclear gold-orange with a beige head. The aroma is citrussy with little caramel. The aftertaste is a little bit bitter.
3.7 Tasted from bottle into nucleated pint glass. Poured a deep amber-orange color with off-white foam, good retention with some lace. The basis for the beer is a standardized strong American style IPA. The overall aroma, flavor, and heightened alcohol percentage were reminiscent of Stone’s Arrogant Bastard or Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale, for instance. Mikkeller’s Single Hop series is really fun for us beer nerds because you get to see what a familiar beer would taste like if a single hop cultivar was used for bittering, flavor, and aroma. I love, love, love the delicate, earthy, flowery aroma of East Kent Goldings (duh, it--or a closely related variety of it--is used in many of my favorite English Ales, ESBs especially, such as St. Peter’s Organic Ale). I even prefer Goldings’ aroma over the finest German noble hops. It’s fine for bittering; after a 60-90 minute boil, I have a hard time believing any expert can name the cultivar used for bittering. Although the low alpha acid percentage of Goldings requires the brewer to use a huge quantity of them, thereby also increasing the grassy, vegetable impression more than neccessary. But here’s the most interesting thing I learned today: I don’t really like Goldings for flavor hops, they’re not very smooth or tangy or citrusy like superior flavor varieties. For that reason, this specific beer is not as good as it could have been with a super high alpha for bittering, a better tasting flavoring hops, and East Kent Goldings for aroma hops. Now I know why Goldings is only ever advertised as an aroma hop. Duly noted. Thanks Mikkeller, keep up the great experiments!
3.3 Bottle from the Hope Valley Bottle Shop, Durham. To me, one of the least impressive of the single hop series (though maybe I just don’t like EKG too much). Nice enough pour, a deep murky orange with a fluffy head and a real stickiness to it. Nose was a bit overly pungent, with sweet malts not quite meshing with the leafy notes. Mouthfeel was full but the palate was a bit too treacly to me. As with the nose, the taste had its moments but the beer was especially well integrated or balanced to me.
3.4 Amber lively body with a white rocky head. Aroma has pine, lemon, very small hint of acidity. Flavour is a bit underwhelming and bitter, dusty, with a dry grassy finish.
3.7 Bottle 33 cl. Slightly hazy amber pour with a huge off-white head of long duration. Aroma of malt and hops with notes of pine and grass. The taste is slightly maltsød and good hoppy with notes of citrus and grass. Let dry and moderately bitter mouthfeel and finish
3.7 (Bottle 31/08-2011) Slightly unclear orange color, beige head, good bitterness, medium hoppy aroma. BB date 23/12/11.
3.6 golden orange with a big off white head. not much aroma hop. but very good hopy flavor without getting too hopy. Fine Ballance.
3.1 one of the single hop ipa beers brewed by everyones favourite danish brewery. perfectly drinkable though not exactly the greatest beer ever made. Fairly bitter.
3.8 Bottle given to me graciously from my step brother, I do believe he purchased it at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo. Pours a cloudy copper like colour, with a nice thick white head that recedes to a blanket that covers the top and clings to the walls of the glass. There is a couple spots of lace here and there. Aroma is not as strong as I had anticipated in comparison to the others I’ve had, which leads me to believe that the "East Kent Golding" is not that aromatic. Smells a little of pine, a little wood, and a tinge of citrus. Taste is quite bitter, dry and tart, maybe a little sour even?
3.5 Bottle. Clear amber colour with large creamy white mostly lasting head. Hoppy aroma. Bitter flavor. Creamy palate.
2.9 33cl bottle at Olympen. Hazy orange colour with a big creamy head. Aroma is lafen with notes of malts, grass and some hops and caramel. Flavour is bordering on sweet with notes of malts, grass, caramel, nuts. Some faint hint of hops. This beer shows me that East Kent Golding alone is not a good hop for IPA-style beers. Too bland and lacking the bitterness expected of and IPA. Short aftertaste.
3.2 Bottle at Sanctuary. Wonderful hop aroma. Sweet flavor with lots of grassy hop flavor--kind of raw, much less refined than the other single hop mikkellers. Good, not great.
3.8 Like Tbone says, indeed the name is wrong here. It should indeed be "East Kent Golding Single Hop IPA". Anyway, color is a hazy dark orange, kind of amber. Smell and taste of this hop seem to bring a little more bitterness instead of fruits, grapefruits and a little orange peel. In short: it smells and tastes a little less fruity than other IPA’s. Certainly not bad, but certainly not the best from this series.
2.9 Bottled 330ml (Beer Planet, BB 12/2011) By the way, all of these single hops have wrong name at Ratebeer, the name of this beer is "East Kent Golding Single Hop IPA". Maybe it is done for alphabetic sorting, but wrong they are ... Slightly hazy deep amber color, small off-white head. Resiny hoppy aroma has also sweetish notes, some rubber or glue, caramel. Medium-bodied. Dry woody hoppy flavor, salty finish, some resiny notes. Malt profile is suprisingly a bit weak for this ABV, but flavor has some alcohol too. Not a bad beer, but East Kent Golding does not play very well alone it seems.
3.2 On draft at Leons. A little citrusy but mostly bubble gum and my ever favorite band aid hop profile. Solid in the hop education just not one I would normally choose for a beer.
3.7 Pours a rusty haze of orange with nice fluffy off white head. Nose of sweet malt and light grassy pine. Creamy body of malty caramel and light citrus with a slightly dry finish that allows a little acidic bitterness to shine from the kent goldings. A good, well balanced IPA with a fantastic body.
3.2 Bottled 330ml. -Amber coloured, medium to big sized off-white head, citrusy fruity nose. Moderated toasted malt, citrusy fruity and very bitter hoppy with grassy notes. Quite dry and bitter hoppy finish. Ok IPA but nothing special in general.
3.3 Bottle at Olympen. Copper red, very hazy, big white head. Aroma is much weaker than the other singlehops and has notes of grass and citrus. Taste is much the same. Some malts and some sweetness but not anything that really dominates. Finish is quite bitter. Much grass aromas here. Easily the best part of this beer
3.1 Yellowish color, not quite as golden as the others in this series of 10 single hop IPAs. Tight and almost tart flavor, fresh taste with a slight sweetness. Not the greatest beer in the series, but a good thirst quencher, which lacks a little fullness.
2.8 It’s a beautiful, hazy/unclear dark orange beer with a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, straw and citrus. The flavour has a light sweetness and a nice bitterness and notes of malt, caramel, citrus, straw and a dry, bitter finish.
3.2 Unclear amber of color with a foamy white head. An aroma of fruits, apples, hops and weak spice. A flavor of spice, hops, weak bitter and dry.
3.6 From a bottle poured an amber color with a good amount of head. Hoppy flavor with a quick finish.
3.4 Bottled, BB 12/22/11. Poured clear lighter orange with a short, dense cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up a lovely dose of pine and citrus upfront, with bready and lesser honey backing.. slightly resiny.. this came across very well for me. The flavor found bready and pale maltage at the core.. bitterness surrounded, and was a lot more grassy than the nose indicated.. still some citrus and pine accents.. finished with tangy citrus and wheatgrass.. just a decent balance between the components. Medium-bodied with prickly carbonation on the palate.. almost more sourness than bitterness, which threw me off a bit.. overall a decent one, but disappointing after the initial impression.
3.3 Bottle. Dark golden color, big white head. Not really the hop you expect in a single hop ipa, and with good reason. Aroma of some hops and caramel, while taste is malty with a small hint of citrus fruits. I love the single hop series and the concept, and have to admit if this wasn’t a Mikkeller single hop there’s a high chance I’d have bought something else. Still surprised what’s been achieved with the east kent here though
