3.7 375 ml bottle. Cloudy brown with some big bubbled tan froth. Nose is caramel, brandy, raisin and apple. Medium body with a crisp bite finishing dry and a bit dull. Brief candy apple sweetness then brandy and wood. Ends bitter and leafy. Too much barrel.
4.1 A clear dark red/brown colored beer, with a large beige head. The aromared fruits like berries.A little caramel with wood, a little winery and alcohol. The taste of red fruits, berries, wood notes some malts, winery, madera with notes of alcohol. The aftertaste is sweet, has wood notes with bitter hints.
4.4 Bottle. Clear amber, beautiful off white head. Aroma of port and madeira. Very nice, complex flavor, full of malts, caramel, sweet red wine. More if a barley wine than an amber.
3.3 Bottle @ tasting. Aroma is whiskey, red wine, barrel, slight fruity note and some caramel. Flavour is wine, caramel, alcohol and some spice. A bit thin.
4.2 Dark copper, very nice body and tan coloured head. Barley wine like aroma with concentrated fruit, powerful madera and complex wild wood. Smooth low carbonation, not super thick and well developed. Flavourful and dangerously drinkable. (33cl bottle at MrHangover’s tasting)
3.6 Green bottle, 375 ml, best before 15/09/19, with Louise et Luc Bourbonnière, savoured on June 1 2012; eye: dirty brown, hazy, no effervescence, tiny ring of brown head, no lacing; nose: alcohol, rose water, hops, light spices, fruity; mouth: alcohol, malt, light fruity, light spices, light hops, really dry finale in alcohol, full body, not much carbonation, rather bitter, lightly sweet, alcoholic texture; overall: fine FRANÇAIS Bouteille verte, 375 ml, meilleure avant 15/09/19, avec Louise et Luc Bourbonnière, savourée le 1er juin 2012; œil : brun sale, trouble, pas d’effervescence, petit anneau de mousse brun, pas de dentelle; nez : alcool, eau de rose, houblon, léger épices, fruité; bouche : alcool, malt, léger fruités, léger épices, léger houblon, finale très sèche en alcool, corsée, peu carbonatée, plutôt amère, légèrement sucrée, texture alcoolique; en résumé : bien
4.2 Ok normal Lambic sized bottle, but the lovely draped wax makes it lovely exclusive and so nice looking, that it’s a pity to open this bottle, so nicely waxed. Medium vast yellow ish cheesy creamy head on top of a deep hazy to murky amber ruby colored beer with some big chunks on the bottom of my glass. Aroma’s of red fruit, red berries, light whiskey/vinous tones, wood, light boozey, some barley malts, some roosvice,  Smells good. Flavours of alcohol, spices, barleys, barley malts, barrel aged boozy red fruit, alcohol soaked cherries, some berries, hints of something strawberry and raspberry, some rose hip, sticky barley malts, some slight hints of sour ish yeast (not that the beer is sour, but there are some sporadic moments where there seems to come out some slight soury tints). Equally spread bitterness and sweetness with a full flavoured sticky warmth. Aftertaste of barley malts, wood, some fruit tones and a light spicy bitterness. Low carbo, soft creamy almost silky mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture. Nice brew, bit boozey, but good tasty!
3.9 A reddish amber ale with a thick brown head. In aroma, a beautiful rosewater and hops, warming alcohol, gin juniper and berries. In mouth, a doughy malt with intense herbal bitterness, white grape skins, mineral qualities, and warming alcohol. Tasted with GRM on June 1 2012. Merci Sylvain!
3.1 Shared bottle at Cardinal. Pours amber, small beige head.Aroma of barrel, vanilla, berries and alcohol. Taste is malty, barrel and oak, dry mouthfeel, light fruity, dark red fruits. A bit messy towards the end.
3.7 Bottle. Hazy brownish with a small head. A lot of barrel in both the aroma and taste. Dried fruit, wood, sugar, hops, almonds and some spices. Dry with minimal carbonation. A different and enjoyable beer.
3.6 Tydlig fat i doften. Smaken är god och mycket söt. Stora andelen av kandis socker och frukt. Lång lite torr eftersmak.
4.4 Intensly complex; yet so easy to enjoy. The barrel-aging has a more pronounced effect than most beers I’ve ever had, which results in a truly wood’ish aftertaste. Taste lingers in the vicinity between sweet-bitter and tender umami. A true masterpiece and one of my all time Mikkeler favourites.
2.9 (Bottle) Pours muddy brown with a nougat coloured tiny head. The aroma holds almonds, apples, mud, penicillin, liqueur, bready malt and wood. Bit yeasty. The flavour is light to medium sweet, medium bitter and light to medium acidic. Tones of bitter hops, almonds, wood, alcohol and apples. The mouthfeel is peppery and astringent with almost no carbonation. The finish is fiery from the alcohol alongside a light liqueur hint. Medium bodied.
4.4 Bottle courtesy of Jesse. Thanks! Cloudy medium brown with a creamy tan head. Very nice brandy, grape, raisin, chocolate, caramel, and subtle vanilla aroma and taste with a sharp oaky finish. Creamy, velvety palate. Damn good.
3.5 Bottled 375ml (Pikkulintu, BB 15.09.19) Deep ruby color, steady creamy beige head, lace. Intensive aroma of berries, wood, oak, vanilla, madeira ... after 2.5 years this shows some ageing going on. Medium to full-bodied, Caramel, light alcohol, vanilla, light hoppyness. A bit sweet, probably gained a lot by ageing. Maybe closer to some kind of scotch ale than amber ale.
3.3 05/01/2012 Brasserie 4:20 (375ml bottle). Bevuta al Mikkeller Beer Festival. Ambrata, torbida, poca schiuma, poco persistente. Corpo medio, carbonazione soft. Un po’ sgraziata, ma bevibile.
3.9 Bottle. Creamy off-white excellent mostly lasting head. Amber colour. Moderate malty and hopy aroma. Intense. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate. Excellent.
3.5 Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is dark amber. Aroma and taste are caramel, fruits, malt and hops. Slightly vinous.
3.8 BB 13/09/2019.
3.5 Wow... never had anything like this. Pours murky dark brown with a large fading head and big chunks of yeast. Nose shows currants, port/sherry notes, caramel and faint spicy characters. Really similar to a fortified wine! Similar flavours, definitely sherry-like in character, but with carbonation! Big sultana and grape notes, very rich and sweet, with a fair amount of booze. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of sherry so a little off-putting in that regard. A bit too much booze.
3.6 Reddish brown of color with a beige head. An aroma of brandy, alcohol, raisins, spice, caramel and port. A flavor of port, raisins, caramel, dry, brandy, oak and bitter.
3.6 Bottled. A hazy red beer with a lazing tan head. The aroma has notes of over ripe fruits, malt, caramel, wood, alcohol, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of wood, alcohol, toffee, nuts, vanilla, roasted malt, fruits, and yeast, leading to a dry roasted finish.
3.6 375 ml bottle @ Olutravintola Pikkulintu. BBE 15.09.2019. Pours hazy orange colour with small head. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, candy sugar, ripe fruits, plum, light berries, oak and whiskey. Flavour of sour berries, ripe fruits, malts, caramel, toffee, spices and some licorice. Very complex mesh of flavours that do not mix together quite that well. 5434
3.7 375ml bottle @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki Pours dark red with a bubbly head. Aroma has notes of berries, malts and wine. Complex taste has notes of red wine, berries and malts. Warming, sticky and slightly bitter finish. A bit unbalanced, but otherwise a quite nice amber ale.
3.7 375 ml bottle @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki. BBE 15.9.2019. Pours a dark, hazy, reddish brown colour with a thick beigeish head. Aroma of sweet berries, grains and some yeast. Flavour of slightly toasted malts, caramel, grains, yeast, oak, sweet berries and hay. Bitter hops as well. Medium bodied, thick mouthfeel and a finish of sweet berries, oak and somewhat bitter hops. Alcohol comes through a bit too much but this clearly has aging potential.
2.9 Courtesy of Jason Bertrand, who can’t remember his Ratebeer name, but is a great friend nonetheless. Aroma of caramel, candy sugar, red wine and moderate herbal hops. Appearance was red tinted brown with light tan head. Flavor matched the nose with a really boozy finish. Palate was bubbly. I didn’t get it.
3.5 Sampled at Gothenburg Beer Festival 2011. September 2, 2011 Pours soggy amber, almost brown. Minimal foam. Sweet, slightly sour aromas of leaves, sweet caramel, dust and wood. Sweet almost futile taste. Small tannin notes that mixes up with fresh fruits. Very unique. Good boozy character with some spirit characteristics.
3.9 Bottle 375ml @ home Pours cloudy dark amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, grape, alcohol and wood. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light to medium bitter with a long light bitter and sweet woody finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
1.0 A: The pour is a murky dark amber color with almost no head to speak of. S: Whew, that’s a rough nose. Tons of alcohol with just as much, if not more, acetone. It’s almost got a mace/pepper spray aroma to it, too. Intense aroma of cheap perfume with a little bit of vanilla and malt. T: God, the flavor is just awful, too. Acetone, booze, and searing heat. A little bit of bready malt and vanilla, a touch of oak, too. There’s a really solventy and rubber cement kind of character to it that is just incredibly harsh. M: Medium bodied with very low carbonation. O: Atrocious is a good word to describe this beer.
3.1 Hazy orange / red color with small off-white head. Vinous aroma. Flavor is mild acidic but incredibly exciting flavors from the Barrael. Is not the red wine you should probably just leave it.
