Mikkeller X-mas Porter 2007 Til Fra (To From)

Mikkeller X-mas Porter 2007 Til Fra (To From)

English: ’To From’ is the perfect Christmas gift for lazy dudes. Just fill in the To/From card on the front label and put it under the three.
’To From’ is an easy drinkable christmasporter with light malty sweetness and a slight touch of X-mas spices.

Editor’s note: This is the 2007 edition. 2008 has a separate listing.

3.8 (Bottle) Black colour with brief, foamy, brown head. Malty, roasted, spicy nose with notes of strong black coffee, dark rye bread, soy sauce, raisins and lots of spices (star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). Malty, spicy taste with strong black coffee, roasted malt, muscovado sugar, cocoa, soy sauce, star anise, clove, cinnamon and lots of citric hops in the finish. Almost full body, fairly sweet. Powerful, spicy and tasty. Very nice beer.
3.6 Thanks to yespr for that one! Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass deep black, small head, a bit oily. Starts mild-malty, fine fruity like apricot and dried fruits. Finish more roasty-malty with coffee notes, drier, a bit moldy. Interesting, but not the best Mikkeller beer!
3.5 Bottle @ Dan’s house. Dark brown/black appearance with a light brown head. A touch spicy, but quite mellow, slightly smoky, dark malty nose. Mellow nutty, smoky, roasty, dark malty porter flavor. Light smoky, burnt, BBQ, roasty aftertaste. I enjoy this one a lot more than the ’09 and ’10 versions.
3.7 14/06/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Nera, densa, quasi impenetrabile, schiuma crespa color cappuccino abbastanza persistente.
3.1 (Bottle, party downstairs at Falling Rock) near black, creamy tan head. Nose of caramel, sweet chocolate, raisin, maple, light alcohol and cocoa. Smells great! Unfortunately the taste has really not done well. Taste is very smooth, ashtray, chipotle and roasty. Thin body, old coffee, grounds and water.
4.0 Flaske 0,75l spandert av Rune under vennetreff hos ham 15 jan 11. Svart. Mokkafarget skum. Aroma av sjokolade & vanilje. Innholdsrik smak: Krydder & sjokolade. Innslag av tørr frukt, så en syrlig bitterhet. Variert & godt.
3.7 On tap. Poured a dark ruby brown with a nice tan head. Nose was nice mix of roasted malt, spice, oak, light fruit. Taste was also very complex, with the same roasted malt, oak, dark fruit, and chocolate. A nice change of pace from some other holiday ales. Finsh was a little bitter. Hops were a bit citrusy. Overall, a very nice ale.
3.7 24th February 2009 Opaque black beer. Short lived frothy tan head. Dominated by by some unusually fruity flavours - orange, peach and grapefruit flavours burst through the smooth but slightly roasty stout. Also a distinct minty - licorice note just after the mid. Finishes with a touch more hop but a little more bitterness. Unusual porter with an unusual flavour profile.
3.5 Two 750ml bottles, bb.25.09.11, bought at Ølbutikken in Copenhagen some years ago and stored in my cellar waiting for a special occasion. Topped by a wire cradle and a cork. Pitch black body under tiny, tan coloured patches. Smell of chocolate and coffee. Taste of earthy malts flavoured with chocolate, liquorice and raisin. Dusty hops to the ending. Creamy and dry in the mouth. Drinks quite well (shared with good friends at a New Year’s party in Tromsø, 15.01.2011).
4.7 Creamy, thick, coffee stout that lingers on the tongue! Definitely a do over
3.9 I bought this from Knightly a while back and have sort of unintentionally aged it. Very dark brown color and pours with a thin tan foam on top. A thin frothy layer for the most part sticks around and produces spots of lacing. Once the cork was pulled the first scent picked up was dark fruit. As I lean in the dark fruit is gone and the aroma consists of lots of smokey ash and chocolate. Following suit, an ashy smoke character is prominent in the flavor. I guess it’s a bit like charcoal. Dark, somewhat creamy, chocolate follows with woody notes and leaves. There are some lighter vinous notes as well but I’m not really picking up much fruit flavor. This tastes a little peppery, again quite ashy, but it’s nearly matched by the sweetness of the beer. A lot of that seemingly from chocolate. This is good stuff. It’s very drinkable for sure but with a full body and tasty flavors. I never had this fresh but I find it hard to believe that this has gotten worse with age.
4.6 Haoppy aroma. Black in color with solid tan head. Super chocolatey coffee with a nice hop balance. Notes: Kerstbier Festival ’10
4.4 From notes: Pours pitch black and completely opaque without even a slight trace of lighter color when held to a light source and a massive three finger frothy mocha colored head. Excellent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap that coats the glass with large chunks of soapy lacing. Roasted mal aroma with lots of spicy notes and roasty chocolate. Hints of peppermint, pepper and cinnamon as well as some toast, coffee bean, toffee and oatmeal in the nose. That unpleasant medicinal cough syrup presence that often appears in holiday beers is absent. This beer smells amazing! Wonderful chewy full body with lots of different flavors bouncing off of one another. Roasted chocolate maltiness with silky lactic creaminess as well as plenty of peppery spice. I’m picking up a lot of peppermint and cinnamon which add a decent balance to the roasted coffee, oatmeal and toffee notes. This beer is extremely well balanced with some subtle dark fruit notes thrown in there as well. The ABV is very well masked making this beer extremely quaffable. Excellent and highly recommended!
3.0 Dark pour with almost no head. Sweet inviting festive aroma. Starts like a porter with the slight hint of chocolate. In case you forgot this was a holiday brew, soon the nutmeg and cinnamon take over. Finishes with a nice burnt aftertaste. A bit light for a Mikkeller porter yet heavy on taste.
3.8 On tap at Trappeze in Athens, GA, this raised a handsome milk chocolate head above a thick, viscous black body. The head laced the glass as I drank it down, though this was a genuine sipper, and so it took some time. This was labeled a Christmas beer, but it gave off more than a few characteristics of an imperial stout, including a thick, roasty aroma with lots of booze and flavors of chocolate, caramel, and roasted nuts.
3.7 750 ml bottle from Belmont Party Supply. Looks just like the rest of this series- dark, hazy brown with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate syrup, roast, earth, olives, alcohol, and slight oxidation. Flavor of dark fruits, roast, earth, coffee, dark chocolate, and burnt toast. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a roasty mouthfeel. Tried along with the Fra Til and Til Via Fra, and this was the roastiest of the three, but also my least favorite.
3.5 Pours a nice deep ruby brown with a nice vigorous head. Aroma is slightly red wine like, light oak, tanin grapeskin, with toast, dark chocolate malt, nuts, earth, peppery phenolics, spice- cardamon, and even some smoke. Flavor is light lemon lime with chocolate, citrus, nutty, earthy cocoa nibs, then crackery dusty malts, roasted barley and some cobwebby earthy notes and a medium bitter finish. Ok.
3.4 Taps @Brasserie 4:20 (Rome). Strong, extreme porter, with an intense aroma of coffee, chocolate and brown foam. Good body, creamy, quite carbonated. Unfortunately the taste is not perfectly balanced and the end is quite sickening. So so...
4.2 750 c&c Perrys Liquor (To is on top of label). Pours really black with a 4 finger tan head. Smells very much like chocolate raisin rum cake. Which I imagine - never having had it. Med plus body with very foamy carbonation. Flavor is chocolate, smooth burnt malt, and a touch of evergreen Finishes both sweet and bitter - seems fairly balanced. Drinks quite nicely.
3.8 This corked and caged bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a very large sized head of cascading foam fine to medium sized dark brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque black colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The strong aroma was hoppy metallic and dark malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The strong flavor contained notes of mildly vinous roasted malt dark malt and hops. A wonderful best in class brew.
3.5 chocolate, nuts, vanilla, spicieblack, brown foam, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, full body, creamy, soft carbonation, long finish.
3.9 A note to the Editors note: Can’t find the 2008 edition?? Almost black. Has a beige head, lasting. Aroma is dark, dark bread, laqurice, faint christmas spice, yeast, chocolate. Flavor is heavy sweet, light acidic, moderate bitter. Syrupy texture.
3.5 Black color/ tan head. Nice dry chocolate, woody, musty aromas. medium body. Dry chocolate, deep roasted malt flavor with a mild tartness.
3.6 Old bottle with much thanks to a trade with AJM. Pours with a small, deep brown head and a black body. Light oxidation on the aroma, some mustiness. Chocolate, raisins, earth and dark fruit. Taste is very dry and earthy with cocoa. Very bitter. Roastiness and leather. A touch of lactic possibly (like some dry stouts). Light carbonation with a syrupy mouthfeel.
3.5 courtesy of Jespr - dark black colour under a persistent dark beige foam; roasted aroma of pralines, licorice with robust notes of ginger; thick and heavy but quite creamy mouthfeel; solid malt backbone, some sweetness and a fair bitterness; long roasted malty finish with notes of chocolate, coffee and ginger
4.1 18/02/2010. 750ml bottle (takeaway) from Hashigio Zake. I’m not going to say much about this beer because David at Hashigo Zake wouldn’t give me a discount for being the frist to try it (including their own staff!)... I could have given them tasting notes. Anyway, it is a perfect beer for lying around with a bag of peas on your crotch and it’s complexity is a very good match for the dialogue driven "Nine Queens" (though the finish on the beer was more pleasing than the last scene of the movie). Something like a spiced Baltic Porter cross-pollinated with a Dubbel.
3.5 75cl, recently retired Danish brew, thx to Jeppe!, complex Porter, yet easy to drink, balanced, hazy, small head, good Winter brew
4.3 A serious Christmas time gem. 750 shared at Beer Engine. Dark black pour and an awesome aroma like a fruit cake that isn’t the neon green and red studded logs sold everywhere, cloves. Flavor had a hint of smoke with a coffee water aftertaste. Full bodied, enjoyable, bottle is awesome.
4.2 750 mL bottle. Aroma of chocolate and Christmas spices. Fantastic taste of spices, bitter milk chocolate, yeast and dough. Full finish. Great dessert brew.
4.1 We (with Fistfull and Twindog) can’t believe we found this beer; especially, since it is retired! Stout dark, slightly murky with a light, small bubble structured head with tinges of chesnut brown lacing in foam - beautiful head, even though light. Filberts, powdered cocoa, walnuts perfume this uniquely crafted beer. A malolactic sourness - think light gueze - hits up front before deep tones of coffee, brown sugar (but not sweet) and spices raise their heads to produce an extremely interesting array of flavors these tasters have yet to encounter. After drinking five different Thomas Hardy ales (ranging from 1986 - 1995) in a vertical tasting last week, we couldn’t help noticing the similarities in style even though the alcohol content pales by comparrison. A sensational, one-of-a-kind brew we’re glad to have been afforded the luck to taste!
