3.4 Black with a dark tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee though a little on the burnt side. Flavor is intense bitter coffee, with an almost syrupy sweetness in the finish. Definitely interesting, but the burnt flavors and overly sweet finish keep it from being a keeper.
3.1 Bottle (375 ml) from Systembolaget. Black with a fluffy beige head. Roasted malt aroma with notes of salmiak and gunpowder, along with greep pepper, asparagus, and spices. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry with high bitterness. Did not like it as much as previous years.
4.2 Black body with a brown head. Aroma has coffee, alcohol and herbal hoppy notes. Smooth, well carbonated palate. Flavour has coffee, mocha and a bitter hoppy finish. Great.
3.7 Dark brown body with tan head. Roasted coffee notes on the nose, alcohol is in the taste though not overpowering it at all, good body, dark chocolate with some dark fruit and vanilla. Could have got into several of these but had to drive.
4.1 750 ml C&C bottle with gold foil into snifter, 2010 bottle(I think). Pours pitch black color with an impressive 3 finger dense tan head with insane retention that reduces to a nice cap that lasts forever. Tons of nice soapy lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of huge orange, grapefruit, pine, floral, and spicy hops; with some roasted malt, caramel, light fruits, chocolate, and apple. Super hoppy aromas here, not what I was expecting at all. Taste of huge dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, smoke, coffee, molasses, citrus, pine, and spiciness. Good amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of big dark chocolate, caramel, smoke, and coffee on the finish for a bit. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy and lush mouthfeel. Alcohol is pretty much invisible, hardly any warming after the finish. Overall this is an interesting and tasty Baltic porter with huge robust flavor and easy drinking.
3.3 Pour is dark brown with off white head out of bottle, aroma brings notes of dark chocolate, bitter cocoa powder, wet coffee grounds, hints of caramel, touch of dark fruit, some slight spice notes. Taste is a mix of dusty cocoa and bitter coffee, some sweet dark fruit and spice in there as well, finishes fairly dry and slightly sweet. A bit hot.
3.8 Smell of herbs. Very dark brown colour with massive dark brown head. Very roasted. Strong aroma of coffee, also somewhat earthy. Also dark chocolate. Oily palate, long finish.
4.4 Appearance: near black with a rich, foamy dark purple head, frothy lacing even in a plastic cup. Aroma: chocolate, espresso, pine cones, vanilla, cinnamon, some other spices I can’t put my finger on. Taste: as the aroma indicates, with a little smoke. Finish: smooth, creamy, slowly drying with hops becoming a bit more assertive and resinous. Notes: A terrific holiday treat. Palate was creamy and thick, smooth and drinkable. Flavors a wonderful mix of chocolate, coffee, and holiday spices. Bottle from the Rare Beer Club, aged since Christmas 2010 and well worth the wait.
3.5 Bottled 750ml (Alko, batch 201121) Dark opaque brown color, good creamy brown head, lots of lace. Roasted, coffee beans aroma, maybe hints of vegetables (from coffee beans?). Medium-bodied. Oily palate. Roasted malty, some tobacco, also some sweet flavors. Quite straightforward porter. Ok.
4.2 Bottle courtesy of Kirk, thank you sir! Very dark murky brown, massive brown head with good retention. Aroma of burnt cocoa with various season-appropriate spices. Taste is burnt espresso, dark chocolate, cinnamon. Very nice stuff. Earlier Rating: 12/15/2011 Total Score: 4.1 Draft. Nearly black, large brown head that settles to an edge. Nice cocoa powder aroma. Taste is coffee grounds and dark cocoa.
4.2 Bottle. black colour with a tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, spices, coffee, citrus, hop. Flavour is roasted malt, spices, coffee, cinnamon, chocolate. bitter finish. Full body. Very nice beer.
4.2 Pours pitch black with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee and alcohol. Flavor is roasted malts, alcohol, spices and lots of hops. Splendid.
4.1 750 from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours black with a lacing 4 finger dark tan head. Aromas of coffee, smooth burnt malt and chocolate. Hint of spice. Flavor is chocolate, coffee and smooth burnt malt with some smoke and a hint of spice.
3.6 75cl bottle. BBE 08/2015. Poured black color with a brown head, some lacing. Aroma is coffee, spices and licorice. Flavor is roasted malt, licorice, tar and strong coffee. Very dry ashy finish with burnt notes. As it gets warmer, some medicine notes also. Very oily mouthfeel. Preferred this beer quite cold, gets too ashy and burnt when warm. In small doses quite enjoyable.
3.9 Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours dark brown with a huge brown head and a treacle aroma. There is a smoky treacle, chocolate, coffee and burnt malt flavor with some spices and a dry alcohol finish. Complex and tasty.
3.7 750 ml bottle. Deep dark brown colour, thick and creamy brown head. Slightly sour aroma of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. The flavour is dry, strongly roasted malty, with coffee and some smoky notes. Lingering, burnt bitter finish. Very tasty.
3.6 (tap) very dark brown with small brown head; aroma of fruit and smoke; dry, smokey flavor with long medium bitter finish
4.0 Really beautiful beer, dark with thin foamy top. Spicy, malty, roasted big taste.
3.6 Bottle. Very dark brown - almost black, average to large and mostly diminishing dark brown head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, lots of roasted malt and coffee, light chocolate. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, lots of roasted malt - burnt malt and coffee, some chocolate and caramel. Finish is average to long, malty and sweetish, lots of roasted malt - burnt malt and coffee, some hoppyness. Sweetish stron porter with lots of coffee, roasted/burnt malt makes the finish bit drier. Anyway, too sweet and too much coffee for me.
4.0 Lasiin kaatuu mättiä, mustaa olutta muodostaen ruskean vaahdon. Mikkeller From Via To on ulkomuodoltaan hyvin kaunis olut tulppaanilasissa. Tuoksultaan se on mausteinen, hieman suklainen ja kahvinen. Maku on mausteinen, kahvinen, paahtunut, hieman makea ja katkerahko. Suutuntumaltaan suhteellisen paksua tavaraa. Hieman ehkä jopa positiivinen yllätys itselleni. Voisin ostaa tätä varastoonkin pullon tai kaksi.
3.7 75 cl bottle @ home. Batch 201121 with ”From via To” on front label, BBE 30.08.2015 Rich aroma with chocolate, spices, some coffee and hints of vegetables. Flavour is rather ashy with very roasted – actually burned – malt, spices and hints of chocolate. Rather creamy palate, dry and over-spicy finish. Still I kind of like this.
3.2 (Bottled, 0.75l) Almost black with a huge latte head. Strongly roasted, malty nose with chocolate, milk/oatmeal sourness, notes of licorice. Very roasted-malty, ashy-sour flavor with faint licorice notes, and no fruitiness. Medium body, foamy CO2, slightly thin for the style. Way too burned and ashy to be enjoyable, even in small doses.
3.8 (Bottle, 0.75 l - batch 201121, 20111112) The beer poured black. Its head was light brown, dense and a little bit fizzy. Aroma had roasted malts, coffee and hops. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice, saltiness, hops and bitterness. Aftertaste had roastedness, coffee and bitterness. A beer wth very strong flavours but still balanced.
3.6 Bottle 750ml. Pours black with a brown thick foam. Aroma chocolate, nuts and burnt malts. Strong aftertaste. Not Bad.
3.7 75 cl bottle. BBE 30.8.2015. Pours pitch black colour with huge beautiful and foamy beige head. Lots and lots of burnt and roasted malts on the nose, mild chocolate, ash, distant notes of fruits, wooden notes, caramel, faint alcohol and some earth. As the beer warms up, some distinct salmiac is found. Flavour of burnt malts, ash dry chocolate, caramel, wood, distant peat and some notes of vanilla. A bit too burnt taste and could do better with a slightly heavier backbone. Otherwise decent. 4424
3.8 Bottled. Pitch black beer, huge beige head. Resiny hop nose with lots of tar-like roastedness and smoke, cold coffee and sweet pomarans. Malty, sligthly salty and smoky taste is starts slightly syrupy. It has firm, thick malt body, loads of roastedness, fresh hops and coffeyish finish. Lingering bitter and dry roasty finish. Good stuff.
3.7 Bottled (from Alko, Vaasa). Boy what a mess to sort this out. According to Mikkel a special version for Alko (to me it looks more like 2011 version (backlabel) with 2010 versions front label...). Quite much pitch black colour with a deep brown head. Aroma is caramel, ashes, toffee, nuts, some toasted notes, roasted malts and mild fudge. Flavour is ashes, roasted malts, toffee, caramel malts and some slight alcohol sweetness as well. Aftertaste is rather ashy. A bit thin in the palate. Also feels rather fresh "young alcohol" when you drink it.
3.2 0.75 l bottle, thanks hanniku. Black color. Thick roasty aroma with licorice, coffee and some medicinal notes. Roasty coffeish flavor with plenty of licorice, cinnamon and some charcoal. Long spicy and roasty finish. Full body. Pungent licorice taste.
3.9 750 ml bottle. BBE 30.8.2015. Pours a pitch black colour with a beatiful brown head. Aroma of espresso coffee, roasted malts and raisins. Flavour of roasted malts, bitter espresso coffee, raisins, dark chocolate, weak toffee and some spices. Full bodied, quite high carbonation and a finish of roasted malts and coffee. Quite raw, needs aging. 7-4-8-3-14 3.6 750 ml bottle. BBE 30.8.2015. Has aged really well after two years. Aroma is strong with salty licorice and roasted malts, flavour is rather strong in bitterness and lovely roasted maltiness which isn’t too aggressive anymore. Great stuff. 8-4-8-4-15 3.8
