Millstream Back Road Stout

Millstream Back Road Stout

Colony Oatmeal Stout Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair.

The ’oatmeal’ in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors.

If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you!

3.8 Smells like coffee and a tiny bit of vanilla. Black in color, with a small tan head that is gone in about a minute. Taste is coffee and roasted malts, I personaly don’t taste the slight vanilla I can smell. A bit watery... I would like it more if it didn’t have that slight watered down taste, and the vanilla was stronger. Pleasantly surprised considering I only picked it up since it was a Iowa brew.
3.1 Dark cola colored beer with a thin beige head that disappears almost immediately. Rich nose of nuts, cocoa, and vanilla bean. The flavor starts with some roasted grain and charred brown sugar followed by some lighter flavors of vanilla, cream, and almonds. The body is pretty thin for a stout and lacks viscosity and mouth feel. Decent flavor, but overall a little lacking.
2.8 12oz bottle from Pizz5116. Pours black with a small foamy tan head. Aroma of sweet cocoa, roasted malts, and vanilla extract. Taste is really watered down. Roasted malt, watered down coffee, cardboard, hints of vanilla. Aroma was nice, but overall this was pretty flavorless. Meh
3.3 Bottle. Medium dark brown, clear when held to the light. Light roasty chocolate aroma. Milk chocolate and tobacco flavor. Lightly bitter, medium to light body.
3.0 pours black with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. has a nice roasted malt and chocolate aroma. flavors of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, and slight earthy notes. medium body that was a little watery on the palate. average overall.
3.8 Draft at the brewery. Pour is near black with a creamy tan head. Aroma and flavors are roasted malt, light chocolate and a touch of coffee. Not mind blowing but certainly very solid. Clean.
2.9 Bottlepoured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of dark chocolate, roasted malt and light vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of cocoa and roasted malt with a smooth lingering cocoa finish.
3.3 Oily black pour. Roasted malt, vanilla, cocoa powder in the aroma. Medium thick body. Flavor is roasted, chocolate, tobacco, sweet oats. Decent stout.
3.7 Bottle. A- Black licorice, tobacco, coffee, roasty, cocoa. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Roasty, cocoa, anise, tobacco, coffee, malty. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- This was a pleasant surprise. Didn’t expect much but got a lot. Nice rich and deep flavors with anise and tobacco seeming to come through the most on the nose and a complex taste. Enjoyed this one well enough.
3.2 Bottle; pours dark brown with a thin tan head; aroma is chocolate, coffee, and a little bit of oats with malt; taste is mostly bittersweet chocolate with some coffee and malt; has a dry finish; pretty good
3.4 12oz bottle sold to me by some dipass that is on this site, thanks bro. Poured a pitch black body with an average quick fading deep beige fizzy head. Aroma is on the weak side, chocolate, marshmallow, wet burnt toast, hint of vanilla extract. Body is medium with some average to lighter carbonation. Flavor is better than the aroma, notes of well done toast, dark chocolate, marshmallow, oats. Good stuff.
3.4 12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Beer Crazy in Urbandale, Iowa. The pour is a black brown with a khaki head that falls fast. The aroma is a soft roast. The taste is char roast, the oatmeal and a clean dry mineral finish. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with soft carbonation and the clean finish. Solid Stout.
2.0 bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Black color with a tan head that completely disappears, no lace. Very still, unappealing looking. Taste is roasted malt, a little chocolate, and some carbonation edge in the finish. Pretty disappointing, not really workable.
2.8 Predictably opaque cocoa brown, with a tan ring of head. Aroma of s’mores, roasted hazelnut coffee beans, cocoa powder. A little watery/lack of complexity in the initial mouthfeel, but finishes with a nice roasty, dry flavor, as if you just bit into a coffee bean. The oats impart more of a textural quality, a little granular. Pretty straightforward "everyday" oatmeal stout. Not lackluster by any means, as the ratings might indicate. Decent.
2.7 Bottle, pours black color with small head. Notes are licorice, malt, coffee, and roast. Not thick bodied like they said but refreshing. Still too bland and weak to get a nice tick
3.4 Pours a dark ruby red with a dark tan head and good lacing. Aroma of rich roast coffee with light toffee and caramel notes. The taste is complex smokey sweet rich syrupy and very slightly bitter. Mouthfeel is thick with a clean biter finish
2.8 bottle from iowa boxxdaddy aroma tossed way over to pouring bus ave via pepsican. thank you! aroma of sweet prunes. a bit of ashley tar. like a mikkeller stout light. cold old coffe. creamy milk roast. touch of playdough. not sure if this is shelfie or extreme or what. not all bad, but not all good either. consumed pre-tuck.
3.4 Not a stout fan generally unless a Russian imperial or the like. This is a standard stout. pours dark with thick head and moderate carbonation. smells of light chocolate. tastes a toasted nutty flavor.
3.4 On tap at the brewery. Black appearance with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted dark malts, coffee, dark chocolate, earthy hops and a touch of dark fruits. Similar flavor, malty and smooth with light bitterness. Medium body with a lingering finish.
3.3 Beer of month club. Pours dark, dark brown with half finger tan head. Nose of coffee, roasted malt. Taste of some black licorice, roasted malt. Thickness/chewiness to it. Not incredibly complex for a stout, but a good, straight forward, basic one.
3.3 Aroma is roasty , creamy and slightly smokey. Taste is a roasty maltiness with some slight dry character. Body is dark with a very creamy head that retains well.

2.9 Upping my stout AND Iowa cred with this one. Pour is dark as expected, not quite black but surely not clear. Thin palate gives way to some roasted oats, I dunno, some of the other 200 ratings will be beter for you to read.
3.6 One year bottle pours dark brown black with a small amount of tan fizz. Modest aroma of roasted grains with a light sweetness. The brew goes down very easy when cold. Flavors of sweet roasted barley fell oatmeal start with a light hearted fell but become fairly fillinfilling 5.6% beer. There is a light dark chocolate and dark berry flavor underneath the roasted grains as it warms, nice grainy feel with rounded flavors. Pretty enjoyable, would grab another next time I?m up north.
3.7 Draft pour at catfish Charlie's in Dubuque. Almost black with off white head. Creamy indeed. Nothing special or complex about this beer but I really like it. Just a good tasty creamy standard stout.
3.8 Black with thin head, leaving a tan ring. Very slight spotty lace. Aromas of chocoloate, roast, mildly of dark fruit berries. Same in taste, smooth, full bodied richness. Pretty good not light or watery. The oats definatly give this 5.6%er some depth. Solid stout. Tastes bigger than it is which is a good thing.
3.1 12oz bottle 9/29/13 (Hy-Vee Cedar Rapids)-42° in English Pint-Pours black with ruby tints with a one finger tan head. Aroma of sweetness, chocolate, malt, and coffee. Taste of the same with more sweetness and chocolate. This medium to full bodied brew is not too shabby as I was expecting worse.
2.8 Bottle. Pours a black color with off white head. Very sweet, light chocolatey, roasty aromas. Light, sweet, syrupy, molasses flavors. Lighter, sweeter stout.
3.4 Bottle. Pours deep brown with a beige head. Sweet and lightly roasted malts, medium chocolate notes, and a roasted grainy finish. Not bad.
2.5 Not real great... No head... Light and syrup ie looking ... No big deal ...the main downside was the taste and over all drinking enjoyment period... it offered a half step or more below average oatmeal stout drinking experience...
