Millstream Iowa Pale Ale

Millstream Iowa Pale Ale

Pale Ale's on the coasts of this country are turning into hoppy monsters, but our beer is more mild, and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base. It gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops. This beer was first made in a few small test batches in 2003. The response was so incredibly positive, that it has worked it’s way into a year round beer. A hoppy IPA in the central plains... how exciting!

3.1 Faint grassy nose with some caramel malts. Amber with some haziness. Frothy white head. Very balanced with mild bitterness on the finish. Good grassy and herbal flavor. Very easy to drink.
3.1 12oz bottle pours a pale brown color with a bit of head. Malt, hops ... It's a pale ale
3.1 Rich amber color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of floral hops, hay, & citrus; Flavor of slight sweet malt, floral/pine hops, and citrus zest; Decent.
2.9 12oz bottle from Pizz5116. Pours a clear amber color with a small foamy beige head. Aroma of caramel malt, lemons, and herbal hops. Taste of caramel, lemon zest, pine, and yeast. Meh
3.1 Beer of month club offering. Pours clear gold - ice tea like. Not much of a nose - some faint pine. Taste of some citrus, caramel and bitter hops - but kinda rushed (goes to the bitterness quickly). Ok.
3.0 has a clear amber pour with thin eggshell color head. there’s a caramel, straw, light sour dough, and floral aroma. flavors of citrus zest, grapefruit, yeast, caramel malt, and resinous pine. average overall and would be a good summer time session ipa.
2.6 bottle from Dave...thx man...ok ipa not great not bad...drinkable but not one to search out....(#447)
2.7 A half decent IPA from my home state. Has a nice earthy taste but not well balanced.
3.7 Bottle. Pleasant nose with hints of hops and caramel. Murky dark Amber body with a lasting white layer of head. Mouthfeel is a little overly effervescent from carbonation but the flavor is good.
3.2 Lotta cred. Soft breach doughy caramel. Some resin grapefruit. Not the highest boost. Dry. Fj e.
3.6 Pours a very hazy dark orange with big off white frothy head. Grapefruit, hay, caramel on the nose. Very smooth with light carbonation, sweet caramel notes through to the finish. Hints of grassy hops without too much bitterness. Very well balanced.
3.6 Thanks to Chris for bringing this bottle over! Smooth fresh nose. The beer starts very floral, intense bitter-floral with a nice slight malty body. The mainpart is a bit sharp-bitter, great floralness, smooth, easy to drink with deepness. Nice!
3.3 Thanks to erzengel!! Pours a clear drop golf color with a light tan head. The smell is citrus, mild malt. The taste is fruit, citrus, some bitterness. Light+ body with average carbonation.
3.5 Bottle poured a hazy amber with a small lasting creamy amber head. Aromas of bread, earthiness, citrus and light pine. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, citrus and light earthiness with a crisp dry lingering bitter finish.
3.4 12oz bottle. Notch is maybe late July? Pours copper, offwhite head. Pine grass aroma, taste is big and hop bitter grass. Not a huge body. Nice enough.
3.3 12oz bottle, purchased from Brennan’s in Madison during GTMW. Notch in the bottle indicates June. Entirely hazy amber color. Thin khaki head. Leaves decent, thicker ridges of lace. Medium plus body. Smooth, tingly, kind of crisp lightly soft moderate strength carbonation. Light dry finish. Bigger bitter taste, light sweet. Mild caramel malt, kind of spicy. Piney hop. Pretty solid, enjoyable lighter-bodied IPA. Good bitterness, good bigger piney hop. A little 1-dimensional, but solid. Enjoyed with my sandwich, not really sold on the pairing though. As it goes, it drags a bit, loses it’s luster, but never becomes disappointing.
3.1 12 oz bottle. Looks like a hazy sweet tea. Has a small white ring. Aroma of citrus rinds, fruit esters, caramel and toffee. Citrus rinds , caramel, earth, and tobacco hit the palate. It’s a weird mix, but oddly interesting. Not great not horrible just ehh
3.9 Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with thin white head. Nose and taste are mostly malt.
3.2 bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Deep amber color, long 1/2" ivory head, strings of lace. Taste is clear malt that grows a little sweeter in the palate, then suddenly has pine hops dropped on top of it, pretty much obliterating everything. An unusual balance, a little off, but then again, I keep drinking it.
2.7 On tap at the Millstream pub in the Amana Colonies. Near clear orange amber color with slight white head. Aroma is citrus and light malts. Taste has citrus, caramel, balanced toward the hops but not too bitter.
3.3 On tap at Boonie?s on the Avenue. Aroma of pale malts, bread, and citrus bitter hops. Average body with a crisp, dry, smooth feel. Mild sweetness.
2.5 Medium amber, hazy with a decent amount of white foam. Aroma is a pleasant citrus and warm bread. Grainy mouthfeel and malty sweetness could use a better balance. I could swear there’s a slight film left behind in the finish.
2.5 I really wanted to like this one a bit more, being from Iowa, and not getting much millstream anymore. But, alas, it wasn’t very good, wonder how much corn was used in its production?
2.2 As much as I love Mill Stream Brewery this one is a bit rough around the edges. Not bad if you love IPAs.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a hazy straw yellow with some white head. Decent citrus hops, fairly malty, possibly old/stale. Overall a nice beer, one of Millstreams better beers.
3.6 Not much aroma to this. Pours a brownish red with fully diminishing head, excellent lacing. The taste is a slight bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter. I think this is a good beer just sat on it too long.
3.2 Pours hazy gold with lots of minute suspended flocculation. Aroma is piney and herbal (basil, maybe rosemary). Flavor is sweet with a nutty character as the malts warm, transitioning to a very sinuous hop brightness with a mildy veggie note. Flavor drops back to a subdues nutty malt in the finish, with a bit of grass and a slight bitterness. Really nice.
2.6 Tap at CID airport tap house. Pour is almost clear amber with a small white head. Aroma is light chemical and soft hop notes up front with a light caramel malt note. Flavor also with light chemical, faint hop, and the same light, off tarty fruit taste of the octoberfest. Definitely a line problem here; or maybe a problem of too much detergent in the glass cleaning. I don’t know what it is, but it’s not right. I will have to revisit this later.
3.2 12oz bottle 9/29/13 (Hy-Vee Cedar Rapids)-40° in Shaker-Pours a murky orangish amber with a small white head. Aroma of roasted malt and hops. Taste of hops, malt, and citrus. This medium bodied brew is not bad.
2.9 Nothing blows me away... Just a pale...would be awesome on a hot day at the brewery in Amana ...but here on Illinois it's just ok ... Drinkable but in no way memorable...in no way
