Millstream Schokolade Bock

Millstream Schokolade Bock

Just in time for the holidays is our special treat. A dark and chewy bock beer. Around November you’ll find ’chocolate bock’ on tap down at the brewery.

The history of Bock beer is a complicated one, going all the way back the dark ages in Europe. In the 14th century, the city of Einbeck became famous for this style of beer. So thats where the name "beck" or "bock" has come from. No other beer has a more pure and intense malt character as a true Bock. Many large breweries in the U.S. have diluted the original strength of this beer, but we make the real thing. The body of this beer is rich, making it a good beer to warm up to during those "special" Iowa winters. The blackened malt that we use in it gives the brew a slight hint of chocolate. Its a smooth brew, having been lagered for over a month in our cellars, in true bock style.

3.9 Bottle - Dark brown pour, clear with a creamy tan head. Nose is peanut butter, rye bread, chocolate, and a bit of roast. Taste is the same, and it’s well-integrated. Wave after wave of nutty, chocolatey malt hits you until it finishes with a lightly bitter, roasty snap. Thin in the mouth, almost watery, with a bit of soft carbonation. Wow, really taken by surprise by this one.
3.9 Originally reviewed: 4/23/09. Poured into my pilsner glass. Pours a dark brown with ruby tints. Nice 2-inch tan head on top. Retention is weak, as is the lacing. Nothing much sticking at all. Smells of cocoa, bread, hints of molasses, and grains. Mouthfeel is crisp and sharp due to a high amount of carbonation. It’s a little biting. Great chocolate flavors mixed with a warm breadiness. Lots of sweet maltiness in this one. This is a very pleasant beer. Nothing harsh about this at all. Very high drinkability. I could have a few of these for sure.
3.9 Clear, dark, red-amber, with fair, fizzy, beige head / Clean, toasty, nose of chocolate and coffee / Medium body, a hint of sweetness, smooth with soft carbonation, with good balance and dry, finish / Subdued, clean, flavors of chocolate, roast coffee, and banana / A good, solid, example of the style.
3.6 12 oz bottle from Pepsican. Nose is a hint of banana, toffee, chocolate, and very slight bubblegum. Clear rusty brown with a small beige head. Flavor is toffee, ripe banana, and light sugary caramel sweetness. Hidden in the finish is a slight bitterness. Actually an very good beer I would drink every day if needed..
3.3 Bottle courtesy of adnielsen (thanks AAron) poured a clear reddish amber with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of toasted malt, toffe, carmel, light molases and a hint of fruittiness. Palate was medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of toasted malt, toffee, carmel and light molasses with a crisp lingering malty finish.
3.3 Pours clear brown with some tan head. Very nutty aroma with toasted almonds, malt and caramel, some roast and chocolate. Bit of malty sweetness up front, more caramel. Pretty solid.
2.9 It does have a slight hint of chocolate, which provided something of a redeeming quality here, but the color and body were much lighter than I expected. Bottle.
3.7 Bottle in Iowa City hotel room. Amber-red-brown appearance with a light colored head. Dark nutty, caramel malty lager nose. Nutty, caramel malty Dunkel-style lager. Well carbonated. Nutty finish and aftertaste.
3.5 Nice malt sweetness, not too much so, good and balanced and very easy to drink, a pretty good, authentic bock.
3.9 Bottle. A - Dark amber tawny color with an average, maybe slightly above average, sized, foamy, bubbly, slightly sticky, off-white head. Average retention with a nice layer of lace. S - A little on the faint side. A good amount of powder cocoa and chocolate aroma. Toasted malt with some caramel and bread. Touch of dark fruit, particularly raisin. Also some nuttiness. Fairly sweet aroma. T - Cocoa powder and Baker’s chocolate and toasted nutty flavors dominate the taste. Slightly roasted malt and bitter roasted flavors and bitter chocolate provide some bite. Hints of earthy and spicy hops. Some sweet caramel and bready flavors. M - Fuller side of light body with a good level of carbonation. Smooth and slick feel. D - Easy to drink and an enjoyable tasting beer. Lots of chocolate but it is neither overly sweet nor bitter. Enjoyable beer to drink. Notes: Enjoyable beer. Plenty of cocoa and baker’s chocolate as well as nuttiness. Neither overly sweet nor bitter, rather a nice balance. Enjoyable Chocolate lager, although it is not amazing. Nice winter brew worth a try.
4.0 Thanks to Pa for getting this one. Very nice bock. A little nutty and chocolaty. Just a touch of hops. Serving: Bottle
3.2 Bottle shared by Sean, an Iowa tick and I didn’t even know it! Thanks! Poured a clear brown with a near white head that dissipated completely. Aroma was full of sweet grains and sweet chocolates. Flavor began with sweet grains and a mainly sweet chocolate grew through the finish.
3.2 Bottle. Poured a dark color with a small head. Aroma was nutty and dark. Flavor was nutty with a hoppy aftertaste. Medium body. Decent beer.
3.3 12 oz. bottle as an extra in a trade with fidelis83- thanks again, Jeremiah! Pours a cloudy brown color, but when held up to light reveals a more ruby color, and a small beige head. Aroma of nuts, roasted chocolate malts, toasted sugar, and earthy hops. The flavor is also nutty, with chocolate malts, and toasty and roasty notes, fruit, dirt, and cardboard. Dry finish. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty mouthfeel. Interesting beer.
3.7 Thanks to Barleydine for sending me this beer as an extra. This is my first beer from the great state of Iowa. The beer pours a dark reddish-brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is a mix of chocolate and dark fruit (cherries). The flavor is chocolate, caramel and toffee. There is also a little bit of dark fruit and possibly some coffee mixed in to the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

3.7 Pours a clear, dark, ruby tinted brown with a 1 finger, creamy beige head that has decent retention. Aroma is rich grain, roast, sweet bread crust, chocolate, light earth, dark caramel and a sweet milk like note. Flavor is sweet caramel, roast, chocolate, light char, light honey and a hint of vanilla. Palate is light to medium bodied with a sticky entry and creamy finish with a hint of chalkiness and a nice, tongue coating slightly prickly moderate strength carbonation. A really nice dunkler, sweet and rich, but well balanced and not too rich.
3.5 Pours a dark maghogany red with a light tan head, mostly fading. Aroma is chocolate, malt and carmel. Mouthfeel is full bodied, with a sweet tast of malt, caramel and honey. A good brew to pair with ham and cheese or a rueben on rye.
3.7 Pours a dark burgundy color with almost no head. Extremely sweet toffee/chocolate nose. Extremely sweet taste, a very strong taste of dark chocolate with a very smooth finish that is somewhat sour. Very little carbonation and medium bodied. Fairly complex beer form the nose to the finish.
