The grand daddy of them all, Imperial Jack - robust, malty and heavily hopped. Who said "jackrabbits" don’t bite?.

3.0Boatswain Double IPA, decent. Strong but good
2.9Drank as Rhinelander Boatswain Double IPA. Supposed to hate this beer, I guess, but it’s not undrinkable, presenting an odd imperial wheat ale boozy clove-n-vanilla base with an outsized yeasty tartness and modest citrus hop notes. Confusing, sure, but not horrible, even if calling it a Double IPA seems almost treasonous among beer geeks. Would I actually buy a sixer? No. But if you’ve tried any of Walmart’s trouble brewing swill, you’ll appreciate that you can at least finish this pint.
2.7Boatswain Double IPA from Trader Joe’s in DC. Dull aroma. Not as unpleasant as the standard IPA, but not great.
2.912 oz can as Boatswain Double IPA. (Trader Joe's) San Diego, CA.
Clear golden color with a small white head.
Sweet caramel malt, some butterscotch, tea and more sweetness in the aroma.
Malt, tobacco, sweetness, alcohol and cardboard in the flavor. Not a good one. Really unfresh.
3.5Clear deep copper under a thin foamy white head. Bright pale malty base aroma with some moderate grassy hop bitterness. Crisp smooth flavor that’s a little grassy, a little floral, with a slightly citric bitterness. Pretty plain all around. Smooth pale and Munich malts supporting a just average but clean hop bill. Moderate bitterness and semi-full body.
3.3Sweet malty aroma. Poured golden-copper with decent off-white head. Tastes like a standard pale ale, not very aggressive in any department...moderate earthy hop, mostly malty-bready with some apple notes. Quite strong for a beer that is not so flavorfully intense...light alcohol notes in the finish.
Notes: bottle labeled "Boatswain Double IPA"
3.3Boatswain Double IPA can pour into nonic pint glass from Trader Joe's. Appearance is clear, dark amber with nice sparkle, 1/2-finger width white head with poor retention and trace lacing. Aroma is initial bready malt which then shifts quickly to fruity esters (seems like the wrong style). Taste is bread, caramel and fruity esters. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with silky texture, average-to-lively carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, this is so weird for a DIPA that it is a spectacular failure for the style. But, if you called it an imperial saison then it's fairly interesting. Not complex but odd in a somewhat good way.
2.5Can from Trader Joes. Medium brown in colour, with a thin, off-white, head. Fairly raw alcohol, sweet, heavy, grains, a touch of grassy hop. An ordeal to finish.
1.9can from Trader Joes. Deep golden with small head. Sweet and boozy, caramel and cardboard. Light metallic note, which seems to be a Minhas/Boatswain trait. I'd imagine it takes some skill to be this consistently bad. Mark Dantonio's spirit beer.
3.0Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. P ours light gold with a white head Nose is light lemon and floral. Body is light for a DIPA. Flavor haws lemon and some vegetable. Something else maybe like coriander. A spice anyway. Overall kind of muddled.
2.812oz bottle dark gold pour off white head aroma funky vegetable and light citrus taste is same funk with a bit of hop bitterness
2.412oz can labeled Boatswain Double IPA, picked up at Trader Joe’s
Pours clear amber with a small off-white head, light lacing. Aroma is sweet grains and sugar. Flavor is sweet malts, cardboard, caramel with a mild bitter finish
A cheap 6 pack, but I can’t finish a can. Glad I only bought a single can.
2.9Six pack branded as Boatswain Double IPA. Can to cup. Sweet floral aroma, honey. Metallic hops, apple, scotch.
2.5Can. Pours a clear orange with a light gold hue and a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a strong biscuit and earthy grain with a hint of grass backing. Flavor has lots of bread and biscuit with grass and a hint of earthy citrus.
3.183 cent can from Trader Joes. Canned as Boatswain Double IPA. Pours orange with a large beige head. Aroma of citrus, light spice, bubblegum, glue, coriander. Meh.
2.0(12oz can) - Soapy looking head. Clear body the color of dark golden with orange mixed in. Light aroma of rubbing alcohol. Flavor is unpleasant. Sort of oxidized with bitter traits. Lingers on the palate much longer than I’d hope for. Thankfully I only bought a single can.
2.0$2.29 bomber from Trader Joe’s. Mostly clear orange with an average white head and lacing. Aroma is sweeter with oranges, pine, yeast, and bubblegum. Taste is make forward. Sweet malts blend with mild citrus and pine. Very thin and bland overall with a dry finish.
2.522 ounce bottle (as "Rhinelander" Imperial Jack) picked up at Woodman’s in Beloit for the ridiculous and mind-boggling price of $2.50 and consumed cold from the fridge from a Flying Fish pint. Pours a small to moderate white head atop a light amber, very clear body, leaving bare hints of lacing as it decays with moderate speed...weak sugary nose - brown sugar and maybe honey, a hint of thyme, some plastic qualities...surprisingly not as sweet on the tongue, though still a bit sugary - some woody/dry qualities throughout, a bit of caramelized malt, just a touch of sourness and acidity...dry finish, somewhat syrupy mouthfeel, low to moderate carbonation. I was kind of expecting horrible after my last couple of Minha’s experiences, so with those low expectations...well, it’s passable at best.
2.6Smell is great. The like a strong bock with a very bitter finish. Just a little too strong for me.
3.1Bottled. A dark golden beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, alcohol, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw, malt, caramel, and over ripe fruit, leading to a bitter finish.
3.2Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Floral fruity aroma. Caramalt, resin, pine, and some citrus notes in the flavour. Bitter and somewhat boozy finish.
2.3From the 650 ml. bottle "Trader Joe’s" batch. Orange amber pour with a quick lasting white head. The aroma brings out a musty cellar and perfume character at first with a kind of floral and burnt character. Medium body. The taste seems to have a metallic and odd malt character with little in the way of hops. It was just boring to me.
2.2Poured from 650mL bottle. Slightly hazy light orange with minimal off-white head. Cereal corn-like malt with very subtle hops, mild metallic notes. This is the budweiser of DIPAs.
1.9Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel, Tel Aviv. Thanks to who. Slightly hazy orange with white head. The aroma has lots of honey, alcoholic with notes of overripe fruits. Bitterish flavor with notes of overripe fruits and honey, alcoholic. Medium. Unpleasant.
2.6Purchased a bottle under the Boatswain label, and poured into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a cloudy, sediment deep amber-copper color with a good-sized foamy/creamy off-white head with average retention, cling, and lacing. Its aroma featured grainy and pine hops notes along with some barley and spice. The taste was mostly a bitter and sour grainy blend with some bread and earthy tones, and a sour alcohol finish. The body was mostly wet and full, with average carbonation and thickness, and a strong alcohol presence.
2.5A disgusting IPA, with almost no hops to it. Good high alcohol content though.
2.922 ounce bomber from Traders Joe’s. Limited aroma. Leans sweet with more malt than hops. Wouldn’t buy again.
Just bought as Boatswain Twin Screw Steamer. 12 ounce can. My guess is that Trader Joe's switches names and brewers to have a flavor-of-the-month---and save $.01/can!
3.5Bottle under the Boatswain Double IPA moniker. Aroma is fruity and floral with soft malt notes. Taste is very fruity with berry notes, light citrus, floral hops and sweet malt. Body is medium with a moderate, bubbly carbonation.
Finishes with more fruity notes, berries, light citrus, sweet malt, floral hops and a touch of caramel.
2.7Bomber from Trader Joe’s. Very nice price for a double IPA so I gave it a try. Now I see why the price was so low. Not terrible, but nothing good to really point out either. Pours a mostly clear copper amber color with a medium sized off white head that quickly fades to a thin cap. Some loose sudsy lacing along the glass. The aroma is extremely muted for a "double IPA" with notes of caramel but no real hop presence. The flavor has some alcohol and sweetness with bitterness in the finish but nothing exciting going on. Oh well. At least I didn’t spend much on this venture.
3.3Where and how: b. 650 ml as Boatswain Double IPA
Aroma medium intense, citrusy hop feel with plenty of red malt. Mild whiff of alcohol.
Appearance :
Top: medium, white with some lace and rings.
Base: hazy amber
Palate : medium, an OK impression.
Taste: hops muted, herbal zesty feel with mid-heft red malts. Not overly sweet mind so. It felt as strong red ale. Late residual hop feel with soft warming alcohol.
other notes decent.
