2.411.16 oz. bottle from Fareway grocery store. Poured hazy brown, small foamy off white head. Aroma was malt, bread. Taste was moderate sweet, light caramel malt, light overall flavor.
2.6Had traders joes version at a party. Kind of generic cardboardy brown. It was drinkable, but just barely.
3.3Bottled. A brown beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and bread, leading to a bitter finish.
3.0Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Caramalt and metallic aroma. Nice brown roasty caramel taste, but a little watered down.
3.0Under the label Boatswain HLV Ale. nice foamy white head. Bitter with a nice hoppy flavour. Somewhat typical ale. nothing special.
2.9Also known as Boatswain Heavy Lift Vessel. Good taste, good alcohol content.
3.1Labeled as boatswain heavy lift vessel. Lighter in color than I thought. Thin head, no lacing. Aroma is floral, grassy, I suspect English hops, it has a Nobel nose and flavor. Kinda plane, but as is the style I suppose. It’s actually not unpleasant.
2.7Aroma of brown sugar, raisins, bread. Deep brown color with a huge tan head. Sweet up front. Sweet fruits, some caramel. Muddy on the finish with a slight bitterness and alcohol burn. Off aftertaste on finish as well. Meh.
2.722 oz bottle poured into a nonic pint glass. Bought from Trader Joe’s, labeled as Boatswain H.L.V. Ale Heavy Lift Vessel. Hazy amber brown with close to two fingers of beige head. Aromas of caramel, malt, some figs, light toasty notes. Tastes of dark fruit, caramel, sweet syrup. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Cloying sweetness.
2.3From Trader Joe’s Nashua, a $2.79 bomber, what a deal! Labeled as Boatswain HLV. Thicker looking dark cloudy ice tea color. Somewhat viscous on the palate as well, medicinal in taste. It shows it’s 7% up front. Some barely sizzling co2 in there saves it. Boosts my overall score by a few points because of the price, otherwise a thicker high alky malty thang that is difficult until you down a 10 oz; then rest goes pretty easy after you numb up the synapses a little. .
2.8Bottle from trader Joe?s. Says made by Rhinelander. Clove aroma. Sweet caramel flavor. Had second time, awful this time. Odd
2.5Bottle from Trader Joes (HLV Ale). Huge foamy head, medium brown body. Aroma is too sweet, candy, cough syrup. Taste is just a tad bit better, sweet and cloying, soda sweet. Body weight OK, mouth feel alright, terrible finish
2.6Deep amber, small beige head.Rather vague malt nose and palate with a faint hop finish. Not much here
3.7Poured a dark deep red with a moderate head and lacing. Aroma was of sweet malts with a slight fruitiness. Taste was primarily of sweet malts - caramel, bread, with a light hop finish. Palate was good. Overall, this was pleasant surprise. Very rich and drinkable.
3.2Refrigerated brown bomber. Hazy brown with small beige head. Aroma is light nuts, medium body, low carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is toasty malt and some nuts.
2.5Bomber: labelled as ’Boatswain H.L.V. Ale. Opened on 28th May 2015, my fourth beer of a mini tasting session I am having with myself while here in Southern California. Only bought the beer because I thought it was a new brewery to me: turns out it is not a new brewery, just a ’Trader Joe’ make believe name. Anyway this live rate is about to start: beer poured into a La Chouffe badged stemmed tulip (twice). Nice looking beer, clean and clear body: chestnut red, with a full and lasting off-white crown. Malty and woody nose, sweet malty taste, raisins and a spoon full of sugar per sip . A little too sweet, even for my sweet tooth: needs to calm down and have some hop influence somewhere. Bordering on sickly. Struggled to finish the whole bottle: hand full of M&M’s helped.
3.0malty dark smell, taste is mostly malt with a slightly hoppy finish, nothing of note though
2.7Bomber from Trader Joe’s - pretty lame-ass strong brown, a little like an English strong - strong caramelized maltiness, more like charred/burnt - leafy bitterness, syrupy sweetness - some dark bread and dried fruit - a bit of a medicinal finish - pretty lame.
3.0Bottle from Trader Joe’s labeled Boatswain H.L.V. ale. Pours hazy medium brown color with tan head. Toasted malt and caramel aromas with some nuttiness. Caramel and toffee flavors with toasted malt, dough, and nuts with lots of sweetness. Medium body with moderate carbonation.
3.1Lean brown but ok better that Newcastle and cheaper. Some light brown malts great color. Lean mouthfeel. Good carbonation.
3.0Bottle labeled as Boatswain HLV. Clear dark amber with creamy large off-white head, light caramel aroma with a hint of vanilla, low carbonation, somewhat stale caramel taste, abrupt finish. Quite a heneric brew.
4.0Labeled Boatswain hlv. Poured from 22 oz bomber. Excellent head, tumble weed color- beer is solid cola brown. Slight bitter with excellent prune malts. 9.07 bd, 7.5 kevmar, 9.1 dad
3.3Aroma is dark fruits, roasted malts, caramel and light earthiness. Taste is rich sweet malts, plum, raisin and slight funk. Finishes with light tanin and yeastiness. Appearance is a clear dark amber with a thin pearl head that retains fairly poorly.
3.4Brown in color, clear with a thin head. Nice easy drinking beer. Average at best.
2.9Aroma is strictly brown sugar. Flavor is malty brown sugar. No real head or lacing. Meh.
1.6You get want you pay for. Not all breweries know what there doing This is not a good beer. Pours dark brown this is the only thing nice about this beer. It has a wierd metalic flavor, and thats the ony taste I can get from this beer. Don’t waste your money on this one. Very dissapointing.
0.5Save your time and money. The beer is horrible. It’s cheap for a reason. No quality. ALL THE BEER is watery dish-water. Sure, one can buy this from Trader Joe’s for a low price, but really, what you get is nothing on par to quality. I’d rather put the extra money towards a pint or six pack of something more proven and worthwhile. This beer is made cheap for a reason and its to sell out. The owners, both non brew-masters by the way, just some trust fund rich kids, are slinging this dishwater to steal your money. I mean go on the website, it shows the guy walking out of his Escalade SUV and the interviews with him and the sister "co-owner" show the trust fund babies they are...both siblings are narcissistic and ridiculous. I would give this a zero rating if I could. I mean this is just poser beer. its horrible, sucks, skunk, bad, cheap, watery, smelly, no taste, crap.
2.9big thanks to Danny! thanks man, sweet and thin caramel brown ale. Sweet and sticky. Not much else going on, pretty lame.
2.1"bottled as Boatswain HLV (Heavy Lift Vessel). Don’t know why. Kind of a non-descript strong brown ale. Decent malt/hop balance, and if it stopped right there, it would be ok, but there is a pronounced offness to the aroma and flavor, slightly sour and vegetal, that just doesn’t let it all come together."
3.3Dark brown body with a tan head.aroma of roared malt and dark chocolate. Taste matches aroma with a bitterness from the dark chocolate.
