2.8 $3 bomber at Trader Joe’s, but it’s called Boatswain American IPA. Again, let me reiterate... $3 bomber of IPA. An at 6.7% it’s probably the best thing to happen to the homeless since St. Ides came to market back in the late 80’s. So, with this in mind, this turned out to be unremarkable, though not as bad as St. Ides. They also have a DIPA for the same price, but I knew I was already pushing the boundaries of taste and self loathing by getting this. That said, it’s not awful and should I embark on hard times, this will be my sauce (or maybe the DIPA... you need milage for the buck when you’re down on your luck). It’s a lame IPA... that’s the depth of my review
3.2 This particular beer was provided by Buddy Alex for the dart tourney in which I particularly dominated. I have this fluid to thank. A decent IPA but it does not stand on the shoulders of giants. Thru Boatswain label via trader joe’s. Mer. Body was a bit on the watery side.
3.4 Labeled Boatswain American I.P.A. at Trader Joe"s. Much better than the ratings. Modest aroma, but taste was a fine blend of sweet malt and woodsy hop flavor. 6.7% ABV.
1.6 $3 bomber! This stuff so rude it borders on the double imperial old IPA taste. Cloudy iced tea color. Strong, medicinal. Alky begins to stick its ugly head up. Does have some minor cutting co2 in the background. Difficult, semi hard, strenuous, arduous, laborious, tough, onerous, burdensome, demanding, punishing, grueling, and nearly back-breaking, Good deal, thanks trader joe.
2.1 Decent pour but another horrible offering from minhas! Pours copper w/ an off white head & lacing. The aroma is just a little malty. The taste is very odd & more similar to malt than hop. Fiercely hopped? Really? I don’t get any hop flavor & I’m not sure if I’m going to b able to get these 22 ounces down! Ehhhh
3.2 Where and how: b. 650 ml Aroma medium strong, mildly pungent with feel of caramel sugars, touch of citrus. Appearance : Top: small, off-white with rings on glass. Base: hazy, amber Palate : medium bodied, drinkable. Average, maybe tad lighter than most carbonation. Average finish. Taste: interesting blend, chose of hops and malts. It created notes of black tea, tad leafy greens with raw end.
2.0 Clean pour with a thinner head. Aroma doesn’t actually smell like hops. Flavor is of stale hop, grass, metallic, farm, and malt. Leaves a stale and unpleasant hop finish. A first and last.
3.0 Not bad. Poured from a bottle. No head but okay lacing, clear and off-yellow. A bit skunky on the nose but not the taste.
2.5 Poured from a bottle. Musky malt and hops aroma. Light body with a really sweet flavor and a sweet finish.
2.8 A funky aroma of malt and skunked beer, pours a clear caramel color. Taste better than it smells, caramel, and malt with a hint of hops. Medium body with a bitter finish.
2.6 Super clear orange. Very watery no hop aroma, malts exist. Some earth and leather. Not sure what type of beer this was if no t for label.
3.1 Bottle. Golden, hazy, average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, some caramel and bread with light fruitiness, some vegetable/herbal hoppyness. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, some caramel and bread, light fruitiness, light - some herbal hoppyness, faint alcohol. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, light caramel - some bread with light fruitiness, some herbal hoppyness, light alcohol. Bready "IPA". Could be dried with less caramel.
3.6 Bottled as Boatswain American IPA. Poured into nonic pint. Hazy amber with nice shaving cream head. Aroma of caramel, nutshells, cedar wood and apple. Taste is malty sweet, caramel cherry and no bitter to be found. Probably should be labeled an American Brown Ale. NOT AN IPA. However, it is light, malty and delicious. Watery mouthfeel.
2.8 Bomber as "Boatswain" from Trader Joe’s - I bought this because it was cheap and I sometimes have luck with these Trader Joe’s beers - hard to know how to rate this, as it’s not really an IPA - it tastes more like a watered-down, mediocre American Barleywine - clear light amber - pretty much no head - nose of toffee, fruit cocktail, treacle, brown sugar - if I came to it blind without knowing the style, I might actually find it pleasant, albeit a bit sweet - kind of watery and thin in the mouth - caramelized sugars, moderate bitterness, some oxidized kind of sherry-like notes, cherry - finish is really husky - weird beer, but not entirely without enjoyable parts.
3.0 This was called Boatswain American IPA. Creamy little head on an amber pour. The label looks like an old newspaper. The aroma is hoppy, with a little vinegar and citrus. It didn’t seem that fresh, and there are no dates on the bottle. The taste is pretty dry, with grapefruit, and a little fig and coconut. It goes down easy enough, but is not a superior IPA. It was worth the bargain price ($2.50 for a bomber).
2.6 650ml bottle; $2.66 after tax. Bought as Boatswain American IPA. Pours clear copper with a large off-white head with some staying power. Aroma is a little funky, yeast/chemical. No hops. Taste is almost cloyingly sweet, yeasty, and just off. Almost a fleeting shadow if hops, but it’s gone in a flash. Agreed with the rest of the reviews--this is not bad at all for its price, but whoever called this an IPA has never had an IPA before. The most amazing thing is that the bottle states this beer was brewed to 79 IBUs, and yet is not even remotely bitter.
2.9 22 ounce bottle labeled as boatswain American IPA. I guess it's an alias for another brewery. Pours a cloudy rose color. A bit of a sour aroma nothing hops noted. High-level carbonation medium bodied. A bit of a bland bitter taste not much up flavoring at all. A substandard IPA.
2.5 [Bottle (650ml). As ’Rhinelander Boatswain American IPA’] Pours a hazy dark orange-amber with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is fruity first, not very hoppy at all, along with caramel malt, sugar and notes of cardboard and bread -- we aren’t off to a good start. Sweet caramel malt flavour along with fruit, alcohol and a hint of hops. Light to average bitter finish. Average bodied. Really big disappointment (I’m not familiar with the brewery at all so I had no idea what to expect). Addendum: I want to add that I read that someone said it tastes like Malt Liquor and I can totally see that.
4.1 Not a huge IPA fan because they use too much Cascade. Even though they claim lots of hops, I don't see it being too hoppy. Very balanced flavor, low hop aroma. Very different flavor. Can't determine the hops they use.
1.5 Bottle. Deep Amber with a small head. Nose is very strongly malty. Loads of caramel. Toffee apple. Taste is pretty astringent. Harsh bitterness. More caramel. Weird. Full body, active carbonation. Terrible
1.6 Poured from 22 oz. bottle. Murky, copper-orange with a 1-finger buff-colored head and fair lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, toast, mild herbs and corn. Taste of caramel, toffee, hay, toast and cane syrup with only bare hints of any hops. Medium/full body and medium carbonation with a slimy mouthfeel. A sweet, malty brew that bares little resemblance to an IPA (or to any other respectable beer for that matter). Just dreadful. Maybe it will work as a drain cleaner.
2.3 Fiercely hopped and hopped again? I have only been tasting craft beer for about 2 years but I don’t think there are any hops here. There’s plenty of sugar and malt. I will say this: if a 40 ounce of king cobra is $1.07 and this is $2 for a bomber, it is twice as good as king cobra. If they were holding an IPA contest on the corner of my block, and no one else showed up, it would win.
0.5 Save your time and money. The beer is horrible. It’s cheap for a reason. No quality. ALL THE BEER is watery dish-water. Sure, one can buy this from Trader Joe’s for a low price, but really, what you get is nothing on par to quality. I’d rather put the extra money towards a pint or six pack of something more proven and worthwhile. This beer is made cheap for a reason and its to sell out. The owners, both non brew-masters by the way, just some trust fund rich kids, are slinging this dishwater to steal your money. I mean go on the website, it shows the guy walking out of his Escalade SUV and the interviews with him and the sister "co-owner" show the trust fund babies they are...both siblings are narcissistic and ridiculous. I would give this a zero rating if I could.
2.2 Bomber. Unclear dirty brownish orange, feeble tan foam mostly lasts. Orange floral c-malt vegetal smell. Taste is malt forward, lighter roast, sweet caramel, mildly floral and herbal, with an odd, short lived orange grapefruit tang. Softer carbonation, light-medium bodied, moderately hopped. Another disappointing mediocre effort from this brewer. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)
2.6 Amber colored pour. Small off white head. Little bit of lacing. A small hint of hops under a muted malt aroma. Taste is vegetal with a carbonic finish.
2.4 "Not bad. above average (for them) but really, that’s not saying much. Overly malty for my tastes and thereefore light on the hops. As an english pale? OK. As an american IPA, I’ll pass, even at $2.50 per bomber..."
2.5 I had this bottled for Trader Joe’s as Boatswain American IPA. It isn’t bad. It pours a hazy mahogany color with slight head and lace. The aroma is insubstantial, but what is there is sweet by IPA standards. I picked up on honey, caramel, and thin hops. The flavor is sweet, too. It opens with a sweet malt, and there’s a little hoppiness in the middle, but the close is just more sweetness. Kind of saccharine, but not enough to ruin it. You gotta keep the price in mind when reviewing these Trader Joe’s beers. For a $2.50 to $3.00 beer, it isn’t bad at all.
2.9 Pours a light amber color with a white head. Hop, citrus, floral, caramel and malt aroma and flavors. Slightly oxidized. Medium body and carbonation with a floral and caramel finish.
2.3 Pours a clear gold. Has a malty and grainy aroma. Taste is a mix of malts and light citrus hops. A light bitter aftertaste.
2.6 Hazy copper pour with a 1 finger, creamy beige head. Aroma is floral, citrus and fruity hops, lemon, light berry notes and caramel syrup. Flavor is sweet malt, planty hops, some citrus, corn silage, sweet caramel, sorghum and some weird planty, fruity and higher alcohol notes that I can’t really describe. Light to medium body with a medium, sharp carbonation and off dry, syrupy feel. Really weird and not very good. Probably not worth the $3/bomber price.
