3.6 I didn’t realize these Mission St. beers were made by Firestone Walker - had I known, I probably would have avoided the Boatswain beers from Trader Joes I’ve been trying over the last couple of months - this is a nice example of the style - soft texture - a refreshing tartness that offsets the sweeter notes of the malt - understated, but present notes of clove, white pepper, finishing with mild esters - very good brew, especially at the price point.
3.5 Thanks to Dad. I was completely caught off guard. Some of the TJ stuff if not great and some just OK but this was a pretty damn good example of the style. Serving: Bottle
3.4 Pours a clear golden color with a frothy white head. Wheat, yeast, clove and bubblegum aroma and flavors. Light body and moderate carbonation. Yeast and bubblegum finish. A little bland but not bad.
3.3 Amber golden color with a white head. Hints of citrus zest, buttery through the body and a mild hops in the finish. Not a standout.
2.9 "i don’t know what award it’s winning...county fair? this is an ok hefe. nothing at all wrong with it, especially for the price, but it’s just above average at best. all the aspects you expect in a hefe, just lighter."
2.5 Bottle. I would never have guess this a hefeweizen, from the all-American lager-y look, to the heavily biscuity base. There’s the merest of fruity finishes, but none of the classically yeasty, funky aspects I’d have expected. Otherwise, no technical fault, easy enough to drink. (#5747, 9/21/2014)
3.1 pour from bomber ...pours amber with nice white head....beer is clean and crisp....very refreshing after a round of golf...low abv but once in awhile thats ok.
3.5 Another trader joe's tick. Pours hazy golden amber, small off white head. Gum, banana, clove. Fits the bill for dirt cheap.
3.2 22 oz. bomber from Trader Joe’s. Aroma is slight, some wheat, lemon, and banana detectable but no spice. Cloudy gold/orange pour with a billowing, fluffy, white head that leaves lacing. Highly carbonated with big bubbles. Has a very mainstream flavor, nothing to really distinguish it from a generic hefeweizen. Light bodied, slick texture, lively carbonation, abrupt finish. A good deal for $1.99 a bottle, but nothing to get excited about.
3.0 1/19/14. 22oz bottle thanks to PorterPounder! Hazy orange pour with a small khaki head that fades. Mild aroma, lightly spicy, some cream and citrus. Lame flavor, plain pale malts, metallic, mild cream, thin. Meh.
3.8 Poured from big bottle. Aroma of vanilla, spice, bread and a touch of smoke. Golden with slight head. I taste vanilla cake, yeast, pear, citrus, touch of pepper and honey. Mellows as it warms. We’ll done.
3.5 Bomber from TJ’s in Tally. Sparse note: banana, clove, little bubblegum, wheat. Crisp, straightforward, drinkable. Not bad for 3 bucks. - 7.0
3.4 22oz bomber pours with a coppery to gold body that has a slight haze and supports really no head at all. The aroma offers up grainy wheat, some lemon and sweet banana. The taste starts with grainy malts, wheat notes and some sharp lemon like citrus. In the background is a faint sweet banana note. This is a pretty nice hefe.
3.2 Really good for the price. A little lacking on the aroma but the flavor is really good. The banana flavors come through nicely.
3.4 slightly hazy orange with moderate amount of thick, sticky eggshell colored foam; sweet almost syrupy aroma of banana and caramel; flavor is sweet and yeasty as well, with a gentle bitterness. The palate is medium bodied, thinning fairly quickly. It’s a delicious hefe, straight forward flavors.
3.4 Tallahassee, Fl - Trader Joe’s - 22 oz bomber. Hazy dark orange appearance, light snow white head that sticks around a while. Light clove and banana aroma. Flavor is standard hefeweizen with some artificial banana flavor, a hint of cloves, a touch of yeast. Mouthfeel is pretty thick. Refreshing - decent hefe.
3.5 OK label, standard 22 oz US bomber. Half-foggy honey gold beer, fluffy white head which collapses fairly quickly, large grained cabonation. Slightly peanutty, slightly fruity wet paper bag aroma. Nicely sweet and tangy. Not hefe-funky at all, not really spicy. Moderately hopped. This isn’t big beer, but it was handled well. Up there with some of the better hefe’s that I’ve had (notably Live Oak out of TX). A bargain at $2.99 at Trader Joe’s in Tallahassee. This will become a staple in my cellar (read: garage) especially during the summer here in Florida. Now, I’m going to throw a slug of OJ into it...
2.3 22oz bottle, shared with friends. Bottled 6/28/13. Mostly clear orange color. Thin off-white head. Loose bits of lace. None really stick. Medium body. Lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Head fades to minimal. Rindy orange citrus aroma. Caramel malt, light spice. Tastes less like a hefeweizen and more like a cheap american "craft" wheat ale. Sweeter taste, lightly musty. Subpar, kind of biting, over sweet and simple wheat ale; not very well-rounded.
3.5 22floz/650ml bottle into a weizen glass, served cold. Aroma: Spice, but not the clove aroma like in hefes I’ve enjoyed in the past. Some mild yeast. Pretty timid. Harmless. Appearance: Hazy, but bright, yellow/orange body with a nice, fluffy white head. Taste: Wow, there’s the clove flavor. BURSTING with that nice spice. Good and malty. Pretty tasty! Palate: Medium body, with a short spiced finish. Overall: I wasn’t sure about this one at first, but it has a pretty fantastic flavor. Quite nice indeed!
4.0 Bomber from Trader Joes. Holy shit! This is probably gotta be the hands down best hefe for the money that is out there. Only $2.69?!? It was delicious and refreshing and a pretty spot on example of the style. Now that being said, it is definitely NOT the best hefe i’ve ever had. it is certainly an american imitation of the german style, and they manage to come pretty close. But it is not as peppery or banana/clove as the authentic versions. But for my money, this drink pretty damn good!
3.0 Bomber from Trader Joe’s. Small head by hefe standards. The aroma is fruity with weak hefe characteristics. Mild banana, mild clove, faint bubblegum. Creamy, smooth palate. More weak banana and bubblegum on the finish. Finishes a bit on the sweet side, maybe a hint of oxidation. Not awful, just a bit blah.
4.1 22oz bomber from Trader Joes. Cheap. Great value beer! Taste was agreeable. Nice grapefruit forward sweetness. Perfect hefe.
2.9 Bottle with Simon and Keith, pours hazy gold with light lace. Notes of rust, wheat, honey, and copper. Might be infected or way past its prime? Might just suck. Not really sure.
3.0 Aroma of sweet wheat, some banana, and cinnamon. Cloudy yellow in color with a fluffy white head. Sweet wheat is the first taste, pretty one dimensional. Finishes with a mild bitterness that ends well. Missing the spicy cloves and banana esters typical of the style....not bad for the price though.
3.4 Bomber->weizen. Cloudy pale gold with huge fizzy white head that quickly settles to a small foam. A: wheat, bananas, citrus, clove. T: bright citrus dominates, with wheat body and bananas on the finish. OK.
3.9 Pours a nice golden color. Smells like a typical hefe. Missing some much need head. Tastes good. Definitely a good summer brew and would be good with a fresh orange slice too.
2.9 Bottle 650ml @ Hotel Room, Bay Park Hotel, Monterey, CA Pours cloudy golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, wheat and banana. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter. Body is light to medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.
2.9 Bottle, 22oz. It pours a hazy, orange-golden body and a small, white head. The aroma has a sort of strange mix of banana and lemon, with a faint clove touch. Yeah, I know, hefes are supposed to have those aromas, but here it’s rather strange. The flavor doesn’t have the same problem, although a bit boring compared to the best Germans. Medium body, soft carbonation. Banana finish with some bitterness. Far from bad, but I won’t repeat it. 130808
3.1 Bottle. Pours cloudy golden with a white head. Aroma of wheat, some peppery notes, cloves and toffee. Flavor is sweet and fruity with some wheat , toffee and cloves. Medium to thin body, average carbonation.
2.8 7/03/2010: Mission St. Hefeweizen... Aroma: Dusty wheat; weak banana; clove; hint of pepper; a bit weak overall. Appearance: Tarnished gold or new bronze color; milky complexion; mostly opaque; thin off-white to beige foam ring. Flavor: Wheat, banana, and clove; a bit watered down; citrusy character in the finish; slightly tart and refreshing. Palate: Medium-light body; average mouthfeel; lacks body and texture. Overall: Decent and reasonably priced; this would be a good introductory Hefe for those looking to try the style for the first time since it has the traditional characterisitcs, but is a bit softer/restrained than the really bold banana and clove found in true German Hefeweizens. Sample at Trader Joe’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #149 for this beer.
