Mississippi Mud Black & Tan

Mississippi Mud Black & Tan

Dating back to 18th century England, the custom of blending pale and dark beers has kept the "Black & Tan" a favorite of experienced beer drinkers for centuries. Our famous recipe combines a robust English Porter with a fine Continental Pilsner, preserving the character of each, while creating the classic taste of the legendary "Black & Tan." In true American style, we bring you the best of both beers as they meet in Mississippi Mud.

4.2 Bearing in mind we are not fans of IPA beer nor are we into "trends" just to look cool. We like certain beer with certain meals and Mississippi Mud Black and Tan goes with a lot of things especially burgers, chili burgers and dogs, sauerkraut and sausage and many more. It's smooth, robust and flavorful without being overpowering. Just to mention also that my wife, who isn't really a beer drinker, does like this. We are dismayed that the Winco in our area no longer carries it and we can find no one who does or we'd buy a case or two.
3.3 Pours somewhst clear, dark coppery brown, topped with larger foamy offwhite head, not so lasting. Medium malty nose, some chocolate and some roastiness and hints of caramel, a bit of grassiness. Medium grassy bitterness, with some roastiness present in the back. Slight peppery finish. Herbal/medicinal aftertaste. Sparkly texture. Lighter body. Ok.
3.5 Can. Brownish red with decent beige head. Malty and not bad at all. Better than people give it credit for.
2.7 moderate malty aromas with faint note of coffee. brown and clear in color with nice head. taste is quite light of malty notes
2.6 Been a while since I had this beer......something like 15 years, so saw this recently which reminded me to review. I sort of want to grab one so I can review it with a fresh update, but I have a feeling that I would semi-regret it afterwards. Until I do I'll just have to go on old memories. It really isn't a bad beer though, used to get it for camping trips, etc. Has a dark, muddy appearance with a typical black and tan/porter taste....maybe something like a thicker Yuengling Black & Tan. A decent "budget" dark beer. Will probably buy a 32 oz. to take on my next camping festival so I can update this rating.
2.3 Tried this for the first time in 2010 when I really liked Black and Tans. Only now getting to the rating. Not a great example of a generally mediocre beer “style.” Thin and weak on the chocolatey porter qualities.
3.1 Bottle, dark brown beer, creamy tan head. Aroma is malt and caramel, taste the same, with some sour malt. Palate is a bit thin.
3.1 Bottle poured to pint glass Sight: pours black, medium foam that disappears Smell: not a lot of aroma Taste: very good, low bitterness Mouth feel: medium carbonation Overall: very good beer, repeat: no look for: no
4.2 Light wheat aroma Fast building but also fast dissipating head Amber brown color that is dark in the glass Taste is smooth and sweet No aftertaste, a great palate feel
3.7 Came out of an aluminium can that didn't open properly. Thick tan head on top of a dark amber/brown body. No haze. It smells earthy with woodland hops. It's a little blander than anticipated, but has good flavors. It's kind of like a weak porter (and it is..!) it'd be a great beer to introduce those afraid of darker beers to.
3.4 Quart jug bottle. Clear dark bronze pour with a large beige head and very good retention. Decent lacing. Nice nutty brown flavor. Smooth. Light body. A little thin mouthfeel for a porter. Unremarkable, but good.
3.5 From old tasting notes. Dark reddish brown color. Bubbly beige head. Sour malt nose. Zesty toasted malt flavor hints at chocolate and allspice. Bittersweet hop finish. Nicely balanced.
2.8 Quart bottle. Dark orange with a foamy tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, spices. Medium to full bodied, soft fizzy carbonation. Thick and creamy. Medium sweet, lightly bitter. Watery and slightly boozy.
2.8 Quart bottle received as a gift. Pours a cola color with a four finger beige head and splotchy lacing. Aroma is rust and raisin. Mouthfeel is extremely flat, minimal carbonation. Taste is a light porter, a bit earthy, on the sweet side. Leaves a decent coffee aftertaste that doesn’t overstay its welcome. So-so.
2.2 Picked it up just for the bottle design. Pours a dark caramel brown; starts with a decent head but quickly dissipates (even with a straight pour). Aroma: Slight hints of corn, grass and malt. Taste: very malty but extremely watered down (especially for a black & tan).
2.4 Pours a cola brown. Very thin head with very little lacing. Sweet aroma. Thin mouth feel. A mild almost brown ale quality.
2.8 Been seeing this at Trader Joe’s for years decided it was time to try it. 32oz Growlette poured into a pint glass. Clear red-brown color, small white head.Tastes of liquorice, raisins, malty, porter watered down by a pilsner. Taste of a weak brown ale
3.0 Quart bottle from Austin’s Coffee house in Winter Park, Florida. Aroma is a wonderful yeasty beer aroma that I love. Large tan head and body is a dark amber. Mouth feel is a bit thin. Has a bit of that coffee flavor, but the Pilsner in it tends to water it down. It’s an average beer in my opinion. Very much like your run of the mill big brewery type of beer. Most certainly nothing special.
3.4 Dark Amber to ruby-brown color with a thin off-white fizzy head. The aroma is slighty toasty and sweet grain. Light bodied with light toasted grain and moderate caramel. Cool keepsake jug that it comes in.
2.6 Growler (32oz). Pours brown with tan head. Chocolate and bread aroma. Bread crust with chocolate notes followed by a watery finish.
2.5 32 oz jug purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe. I have literally walked past this beer hundreds of times in my lifetime. I’m not sure what possessed me to finally purchase this, but the fact that it was $3.49 for 32oz is amazing. The aroma has mostly metallic notes with a little roasted maltiness. There is a bit of a sweet and floral character, too. Transparent mahogany color with a small to medium light tan head. Starts with well...a lightly sweet malt flavor. Light cardboard and oxidation in the middle. Finishes with a touch of metallic hop. This is extraordinarily bland and flavorless. I would re-classify this as a brown ale, however.
2.6 Bottle. Pours clear dark amber with low head. Aroma is earthy, some malts and coffee. Taste is light, watery, a bit bitter with notes of coffee and chocolate.
2.7 Not the best. Drinkable. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is like a wet paper bag. Finishes with a light hop bite.
1.9 Pour is a still and pale brown, not a lot going on with it. Smell is damp grains, light toffee, small coffee and roast but watered down. Taste follows with the watered down qualities. I’m not impressed
3.1 I mean you know. It’s malty like a dark beer but light like a pilsner... Pretty much what you would expect. It’s not bad!
1.2 入口很酸。确实有浓重的泥土味道。但是刺激感并不强烈,略有上头感。口腔中的味道会停留许久。瓶子实在太有特色了。
2.7 Originally rated on 6/14/08. Always wanted to try this interesting looking beer, I like the jug, but the beer is less interesting. Kinda bummed out that its not from mississippi, oh well. Pours a dark amber color with a thin light tan head, not much aroma however. The taste was very slightly metallic, but after that faded it was a little sweet with hints of toasted malts, slightly bitter. Overall its pretty average.
2.3 I always meant to try this one. I guess the jug looked cool. I poured it from the can into a pilsner glass. It pours a dark amber and red color with a beige head and little lacing. The aroma was caramel, toffee, and metallic. The taste was toffee, caramel, some bitterness, and metallic. This tasted a bit off.
2.0 Better then drinking Budweiser when your broke. Pours a dark color,Smell is of caramel and cheap porter. Watery and taste leaves quickly. At least you get a Pint of it. I’ve had worse porters then this..
2.9 Jug from Trader Joe’s. Always wanted to try this one, but never got around to it. Today’s the day.... It pours a dark reddish amber color. Clear with a fluffy eggshell colored head. The aroma has some weird peanut shell thing going on with a little toast, cocoa and cardboard. The flavor is the same. Not horrible, just kinda thin and lifeless. Peanuts, cardboard, toast and cocoa. Mild acidity with a hint of earthy bitterness in a mostly toasted finish. I could see mindlessly drinking this again if I had to, but I wouldn’t really look forward to it.
