Moa Imperial Oak Aged Stout

Moa Imperial Oak Aged Stout

Moa Imperial Stout is a very strong, upfront and rich beer hopped to over 100 IBUs. Aged with French oak, this beer not only displays coffee, mocha and smoked cedar characters but also some sweet and savoury notes unique to Moa Imperial Stout. A great beer to cellar and age.

Tasting Notes

Moa Imperial Stout is a very strong, bold upfront and rich offering of a famous beer style. Aged with French Oak, this beer not only displays coffee and mocha charters but also some sweet and spicy notes. A tannin like finish and an oak induced mellow bitterness makes it a serious stout. Moa Imperial Stout is best served just below room temperature in a tulip glass.

3.4 Belle mousse. Arme caf, houblon. Amertume puissante qui reste en arrire gout. Le fut de chne ne se goute pas.agrable.
3.1 500ml bottle (sells so cheap for a 10.2% beer!). Black with a thin off-white head. Chocolate milkshake milkshake. Taste has a bit of booze, spice and oak. Not too bitter or too sweet. Not that drinkable IMO, but a decent one nonetheless.
3.8 Keg at Moa Tiki, Singapore. Black with rich beige head. Woody nose with licorice and coffee. Rather dry with full body and dense, packed mouthfeel. Salmiak and espresso, some dark bitter chocolate. Really bitter finish. Staying dry and fairly elegant despite massive flavours.
3.5 Pours black with thin head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate and nutmeg. Taste is hazelnut and chocolate, warming to coffee. A smooth and even wood finish was a surprise. A very interesting stout.
3.5 Black, but clear and brown in the light. Fruit chocolate aroma. Quite a bitter taste, chocolate and coffee as you would expect, but not that classic imperial caramel sweetness. More hops than competitors.
3.8 Bottle. Clear black color with black color. Aroma - Sweet, roasted malts, chocolate, oak, coffee. Taste - Medium sweetness, lightly bitter, malt, coffee, red berries.
3.5 Bottle - pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma is liquorice, chocolate and cereal malt. Taste is hop hit up fr9ntwith a builsing malt into a dry.bitter finish.
3.7 A black beer, a head is medium and beige. Aroma has liquorice, sweet and toffeeish maltyness, some chocolate and vanilla, hint of alcohol from barrel. Taste has liquorice, coffee, roastiness, storng bitterness that's nicely drying the sweetness. Almost full bodied, smooth. Good beer but more could be expected from the IS.
3.5 500ml bottle thanks to Sean. Pours out dark brown topped with a tan head. Nose is good not like the wine barrel version that was a total mess roast malts coffee. Taste is more of the roast malts nice coffee and chocolate.
4.5 The longer it sits and the warmer it gets the smoothness increases. Fantastic stout
3.9 500ml bottle. Pours black. Smoke, oak, vanilla, cherry, raspberry, dates, touch of spice. Medium body with heavy carbonation. Nice complex stout with plenty of character from the oak. Really nice and at a crazy low price. Normally I wouldn’t mention things like that, but this bottle cost me $6!!!
3.8 It pours a dark brown. It has plenty of fruit flavors from dark fruits with coffee and chocolate. There is a roasted element as well and hints of tropical fruit.
3.6 Uma stout com sabor particular, um pouco azedo em seu final. Cor negra con espuma marrom. Aroma discreto para uma stout, com notas leves de caramelo, mas sem as tradicionais notas de café ou chocolate.
4.2 This impressive and unique oak-aged brew was for me the clear highlight and a new personal favorite from the Columbia World Beer Festival 2017! From a bottle imported all the way from Middle-Earth, this poured a dense dark black hue with a khaki foam head that steadily lingers throughout. Aroma was a relatively unsophisticated but rich roasted malt, which transitioned to a sweet mocha baseline for the taste, with a much fuller complexity of coffee and other malt flavors, along with notes of rustic oak and also lighter green wood - like fresh cedar - and concluded with an aftertaste of bitter coffee and chocolate malt. Medium-bodied and deliciously smooth. I will have to search out more bottles of this in my future!
3.5 From a 500ml bottle on 19/2/2017 (shared by Butz with thanks). Pours close to black with a medium to big head. The nose features chocolate, basement and booze notes. Flavour wise, it starts out with sweet chocolate, some caramel and lots of roast/burnt malt, and some oak, which is followed b a distinct bitter/sour finish, which lingers in the mouth. The texture is creamy and the carbonation moderate. Not too dusty, but just a touch harsh at the back to really hit the spot..
3.8 Bittle 500 ml, 10.2% abv. Not much going for it on the nose. Head dissipates quickly. Toasty malts, chocolate, coffee and a touch of smokiness from the barrel aging. A bit above average for an imperial stout, but overall a very enjoyable beer.
3.3 Pullo @ Alko. Humalointi on yllättävän runsasta.
3.6 A suprisingly delicious stout. What the aroma lacks the taste makes up for. Its oaky and smokey. Quite a alchaholic finish.
4.2 Bottle. Very good style interpretation. Alcohol is hiding behind the oak aroma. Tin of sourness.
3.9 500mL bottle from Camperdown Cellars Pitch black body, holds dense tan head. Great nose to it - roast malts, charcoal, black coffee, fragrant & spicy hops, vinous red fruits, raisins, vanilla & toast. Body is slick, sticky, inky, with a drying roast, tannic acrid note. Not overly rich but intense - charred wood, burnt toast, coffee grinds, vanilla, raisins, clove, licorice, blackberry & currants. Lingering finish, touch of booze warming, very bitter, drying acrid note hangs around. Seriously good; good ageing prospect.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty licorice chocolate aroma. Roasted malty licorice chocolate oaky flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate licorice finish with oaky hints.
2.8 Bottle, pours dark brown with almost no head. Aromas of caramel, sweet. Taste is sweet, lots of roasted notes, with marked bitterness, somewhat woody aftertaste. Full bodied, but lacks complexity which I expect from imperial stout.
4.1 Moa stout is a taste treat, woody, bitter and sweet, dark and really strong. I ’ve only ever bought cheap Imperial Stouts and this is one of the best. (Most are too sweet and malty and not bitter enough)
3.8 A serious and seriously good imperial stout. Rich, vinous, oaky, smokey, boozy (two more adjectives and you’d have Seven Bad Dwarfs). Appearance: as dense and unfathomable as my youngest son when I ask him what he did at school today ("I don’t know! Stop asking me questions!) Loose scud of beige suds. Lovely, rich, complex aroma. Smells like a library, specifically one with lots of aged timber in which someone in a tweed jacket is smoking a pipe, drinking shiraz and eating whipped cream and blackberries. This makes me want to be him. Luscious creamy mouthfeel. Sweet, woody and bitter on the tongue. Double-shot espresso, Bourneville chocolate, rum port. Definitely at the sweeter end of the scale. Lord, there’s a lot going on here. (500ml bottle from Leura Cellars, which is arguably too much for one person with no good excuse to be drinking on a Thursday)
3.8 500 ml bottle from shop in Queenstown. Pours black with nice tan head. Slightly thick. Definitely has nice underly stout with toasted malt, coffee, and some bitterness. Barrel aging is well done and compliments stout with subtle sweetness. Well done.
3.9 On tap at The Institution, Christchurch. Black as.....bro. Fluffy tan head. Good lacing. Chocolate malt nose. Velvet mouthfeel. Dark fruit, berries, dark chocolate, caramel, cookie dough....a lot of good stuff. Really interesting and serious late-night sipping stuff.
3.1 50 cl, bottled. Pours black with a decent brown head .Aroma: Grains, milk, grains and bread. Taste: Mild sweet, some bitterness. Leather, smoke, earthy tones. Liquorice. Chocolate. Smoke. Palate: Medium body, some bitterness, slight notes of acidity. Leathery overall.
3.5 500ml bottle BB 2/5/2018 Sweet malty fruity aroma. Poured black with strange sudsy dishwashing liquid head. Well, the taste is all about the ABV - negligible bitterness is followed by an oaky finish and a major alcoholic kick. Reminded me of drinking a glass of wine more that beer. Maybe I have just drunk too much Guinness in my life but as a stout, this this was just well, not.... On the plus side, probably a good dessert or cheese board beer. (Tombutlin - I concur with your diagnosis on this one mate).
4.1 Corked bottle, picked up in Kelowna B.C. Shared with my smoking hot wife. Pours opaque, with a oily tan head, no lace. Nose is dark fruit, sweet sugar, toffe, fudge. Tastes sweet, sugar, touch of dark chocolate, bitter coffe. Tastes beverage.
3.1 500 ml bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok. Looks: Opaque deep blackish brown with a thin traceof yeast sedimentsNear zero head with residual soapy light beige foam which fades in 5 seconds. Good sticky lacing with near zero carbonation. Aroma: Fragrant and sweet full dark malt, with nice strong oak, strong caramel, raisins, alcohol, coffee, cream, chocolate, sugar, yeast, very light lemon and thin grass. Taste: Strong sweet dark malt, with very strong roastyness, roasted nuts, caramel, light toffee, strong burnt toast, black coffee, light chocolate, quite strong alcohol, liquorices, sugar, dry biscuits, yeast, lemon, very strong bitter hops and sharp grass. Body: Medium body; Thin but very slick palate. Mouth Feel: Very solid dark maltyness in a pretty watery background. Lack of carbo certainly doesn’t help that thinned feeling. Strong oak barrel flavor with slight smokiness dominates, so much so it overwhelm much of the nice roasted nuts and caramel, leaving the naked booze. Lots of burnt toast, black coffee and hops which boost the bitterness, which taste quite good considering the strong sugary sweetness. Strong lemon to round. Quite alright. Alcohol: The 10.2% booze is upfront but doesn’t scream often, quite easy to go down with liquorice and slight knock-on. Not bad! Hoppiness: Very light lemon and thin grass in nose, and much stronger taste. Bitterness is very strong and boosted by the malty burnt toast for a lasting, very high astringent sweet-bitter finish. After taste: Quite dry. Roasty, sweet and very bitter to mouth. Comments: This one has got most of the style’s attributes, yet it was hampered by the lack of carbo and thin body which plagued Moa’s Reserved series. It’s tasted a tad too thin for my liking, and it’s not sophisticated as it should. The French oak somehow overshadow everything. Quite drinkable but also pretty disappointing.
