Tasting Notes

Moa Noir is a European style dark lager / Munchner Dunkel. It is a dark brown beer with hues of red and a characteristic strong white foam. Malt dominates with chocolate, coffee and biscuit flavours apparent. Bitterness is low to emphasise malt flavours. Subtle bitterness rounds out the after taste and mouth feel. Hop aroma is minimal. Moa Noir is best served at approximately 6˚C in a pilsner glass.

3.7 Bottle: Pours dark brown with a huge, thick, dark tan head. Chocolate, raspberry aroma. Chocolate, roast coffee, dark fruit/berry flavours. Increasing roastiness to an almost smoky finish. Light, but very good.
3.8 The head is good, the body black. It smells malty, darkmalty, aromatic. Taste is darkmalty, aromatic, full taste, roasty, very nice. 3.8
3.4 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a tight soapy off white head that slowly settles to a thin film and full collar. Aroma is bitter with some roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is more bitterness and slight vegetable roasted malt and chocolate/green pepper. Palate is thin fizzy. Nice $2 bottle.
2.8 Bottle from Utobeer, Borough Market, London. Dark amber colour with a beige head. Aroma of sweet milk chocolate malt. Light body, carbonation is rather too fizzy.
3.3 Bottle from The Warehouse, Phnom Penh. Pours dark copper, off-white head with good retention. Nose is toffee, light floral and grape. Flavour has a slight nuttiness, toffee, pretty refreshing. Definite house character here, a bit of a tannic finish.
2.2 (750ml bottle) Purchased at Hillside. Pours a brown, creamy head atop a black body. Nose of nothing. Very highly carbonated and slightly sour. Not terribly complex and somewhat disappointing for this brewery. --- reviewed on RateBeer.com
3.1 Bottle from Beer Cartel. Hazy dark brown, roasty malt, burnt caramel, grassy hops, quite dry, moderate bitterness. Ok.
3.4 750 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with full head. Aromas of black coffee, licorice, and roasted malts. Flavors of bitter dark chocolate, black coffee, and bitter plum skins. Acidic and heavily carbonated.
3.3 A middle of the road brew from Moa. Nothing to write home about - but nothing much to complain about either. I’m not really a lager fan and don’t really understand what a dark one adds...but to each his own I guess.
3.7 Bottled@HBF2013. Deep copper colour, small off-white creamy head. Aroma is floral, some grassy and herbal notes along with some toasted malts. Flavour is herbal, grassy, mild ashes, toffee and some mild floral notes. Surprisingly tasty, but not your typical dunkel...
3.7 bottle-conditioned 33cl 2013 batch. hazed dark brown body with a fine-bubbled tan head with some retention and lacing. malty aroma with a lot of toasted grains and black patent char and dry licorice notes, but also a subtle gaminess (wet dog hair, animal scat / soil). medium-light body, medium sweetness, mild bitterness. very much in the vein of Czech tmavy: lots of chewy dark caramel malt and charred black malt but absent the roast of German-style schwarzbier. crunchy, toasty and lightly husky malt flavor. good calcium / mineral character plays nicely with Munich-like cookie batter, caramel, vanilla and nut character. rich, chewy, round, enjoyable malt savoriness. thankfully the early gaminess goes away after some time, or I get used to it enough that it’s not an issue. quite good, but for the price I will buy Session Black in bulk and be happy enough.
3.3 Bottle @ HBF2013. Pours very dark brown with not a lot of head. Aroma is roasted, caramel, light touch of yeasty marzipan, dark, porter-like fruitiness. Taste is semi-dry. Somewhat roasted, wooden - but not in an unpleasant way. Turns spicy and fruity on the finish. Palate is medium with some carbonation.
3.5 33 cl bottle @ HBF’13 Aroma is rather nice with cocoa and roasted malt. Flavour has cocoa, roastd malts and coffee. Feels like a schwartzbier that feels like a stout. And it seems that this is actually a dunkel...
3.3 (Bottle, 0.33 l, at HBF2013) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had roasted malts and molasses. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, molasses, sweetness, grass and bitterness. Afteraste was sweet and bitter. A decent dunkel.
2.6 330 ml bottle @ HBF2013. Pours a murky brown colour with a white head. Aroma of sweet malts, sour berries and chocolate. Flavour of sweet malts, cardboard, berries and grass. Light bodied, slick mouthfeel and sour fruity finish. Weird.
3.2 Sample @ HBF2013. Pours dark brown color with a minimal head. Aroma of caramel, sweet malts and toffee. Flavour of malts, nuts, dark fruits and hay. Ok. 4314
2.8 375ml bottle. Large beige head atop hazy dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, some chocolate, light lemon, nut. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, some nut, light chocolate, lager lemon, earthy. Light-medium body, fairly smooth.
3.3 likable, coffee dominates the malt flavour. not much bitterness to be found and rather light beneath the malts, but quite enjoyable really.
2.8 Re-rate. Aroma: cereal, roasty, chocolate, oak, grape. Appearance: a black red appearance, very thin light brown head. Taste: medium bitterness, medium sourness, taste is quite different from what you would expect from a dunkel, very heavy oak flavours, can taste the wine flavours coming through. Overall a very interesting beer, but I do not like it. The oak is just far too overpowering to be pleasant for me. Worth a try though.
3.2 Not a bad beer. There actually was much substance than what I thought. OK flavour and prickly carbonation, some slight roast.
3.4 12.7oz bottle in a lager glass. Pours deep brown with a fluffy, cream-colored head. Aroma of caramel and nutty malts, a little bread and dough, and some floral hops. Flavor the same with a nice balance. Average texture. A pretty good beer for the style.
3.1 Bottle. Dark amber brown color, medium off white head. Aroma of toffee. Taste is biscuit, toffee, cocoa.
3.5 9th June 2012 Hazy dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is semi dry and just a little soft. Minerals. Mildly sour malt with a whisper of smoke. Very mild red berry fruits underneath. Dry finish. A decent little beer.
3.3 37.5cl bottle shared from Annam, Hcmc. Thick off white head. Clear deep burgundy pour. Nice Dunkel.
3.1 Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Nose of roast coffee, roast chocolate and smoked malt. Taste is lacking - mostly likely smoked and roasted chocolate malt. Body is very thin. Lacks complexity.
3.2 Not very versed in the "Dunkel" style, I think this is a nice beer. Black coca cola colour, with a firm head and plenty of large bubbles breaking through it. very weak aroma of chocolates and coffee. Taste is a bit too much coffee over the chocolates, grassy and the roasted malts. Some charred bitterness too. Sticky palate. It’s a pleasant drink. As much as I love the ultra heavy bottles of Moa beers, I hate the über-gay (both in a John Key sense and the other) contemporary design of the new labels.
3.4 Once the hard to remove cork was extracted, this was poured from the ~25 oz bottle into a pint glass. A very dark brown color with a towering, long-lasting head. Plenty of sticky lacing. Has a rather sour aroma of malt with some spiciness. Flavorful, with a generous, but not extreme, load of medium and dark malt. There’s some chocolate, a hint of coffee and a touch of hops, but little of the sourness present in the aroma. A good amount of carbonation. Medium/full bodied with a very smooth finish.
2.9 330ml bottle, pours dark caramel black. Very little earthy head. Smells sweet coffee malts. Nice malt raisins coming through with caramel.
3.7 375 ml bottle purchased at the Westmere Beverage Center (Albany, New York) on September 18, 2012. Very dark brown, medium head. Aroma of dry barley, cracked wheat, very fragrant. The taste is somewhat similar, but more raw, hints of smoked herbs, barley bitter. Like the other Moa, it is very good, I’d like it to have more Kiwi beer!
3.3 Pint. Dark cola-coloured body was topped by a substantial tan head that mostly dissipated. Chocolate was the predominant flavour on the nose, and that carried through in the taste, although some black coffee and roasted malts also came through. Body was light and well carbonated. Easy drinking dark lager with more complexity than I was expecting.
