Moa St Josephs Tripel

Moa St Josephs Tripel

Moa St Josephs is a classic Belgian Tripel. Strong spice, caramel and banana ester characters create complex flavours and aromas which are heightened by its extended bottle conditioning period. The combination of bittering hops, malt and candy sugars compliment the high alcohol content and integrate into a very approachable and drinkable Tripel.

Tasting Notes

Moa St Josephs is a true abbey style tripel with strong clove and spice flavours apparent with a noticeable fruit ester profile. Smokey phenolic characters can be detected. The bitterness is designed to be complimentary rather than dominant. Moa St Josephs is a complex beer that has no added herbs or spices, and is best served at approximately 8˚C in a tulip glass.

3.7 .5l bottle from Alko Arkadia. Rated at Hanniku’s cave 2.0. Pours cloudy yellow with medium head. Aroma is banana, yeast, caramel, apple, citrus fruits, grape fruits, honey. Flavor is honey, banana, alcohol, malts, floral, bread notes. Nice.
2.6 500ml bottle. Pours amber/orange with 1 finger of thick white head that slowly dissipates. Aroma- belgian yeast, malt & orange. Taste- fruity, toffee with sticky mouthful. Finishes bitter (little unpleasant) and alcohol taste -could be smoother. Low carbonation, could be higher. Not bad for nzd $6
3.2 Bottle. Pours a hazy golden pale orange color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty aroma. Fruity malty spicy yeasty flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty finish.
3.6 500ml bottle from Beer Station, Xiamen. Pours hazy golden with a thin white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, bread and spice. Bittersweet finish. Getting better as it goes down but still lacks a little something.
4.0 I really like this beer! but let me start by admitting that I’m a huge fan of belgian yeasts, and Quad beers are my favourite, so this ticks alot of boxes for me but still it will need alot more work to be compared to chimay grand reserve, or the great la trappe quadrupel, but its an excellent start!! Colour is pale gold, belgian yeast aromas produce tropical esters, alot of toffee flavours, texture is excellent due to the ABV, but the alcohol is prominent, and it needs to be balanced with some bitterness, over all , an excellent new world beer.
3.1 Bottle. Pours a tan darker bronze color. Light head bubbles and fades away. Taste is bready and yeasty with a boozy after taste. Not bad
3.1 Pours a slightly hazy amber from a bottle, quickly dissipating white head. Slightly skunky aroma, otherwise rather fruity smelling. Big tropical fruit flavor, surprisingly but nicely hoppy Belgian tripel. Good beer.
3.0 Pours an orange amber with very little head. No lacing. Aroma is full of banana, spice and caramel. Very sweet with banana, spice caramel and light hops. Full body. Sticky texture. low carbonation. Dry finish. Average triple that is really sweet. Not a big fan.
3.7 Bottle. Deep, murky gold with a thin head around the edge. Delicious banana, caramel, clove, cinnamon, pepper and brown sugar aromas. Similar flavours with a large presence of alcohol, perhaps appropriate to style but not entirely integrated into the flavour of the beer, leaving it a little harsh. Rich, thick mouthfeel.
3.6 500 ml bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok. Looks: Translucent straw golden honey colour with a thin layer of yeast sediments; Less than one-quarter finger head and soapy white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Good sticky lacing with quite fizzy small carbonation. Aroma: Fragrant and sweet malt, with strong banana, pineapples, vanilla, strong caramel, strong honey, sugar, alcohol, phenolic, light cloves, bread, strong Bel yeast and very light grass. Taste: Medium to strong sweet malt, with strong alcohol, caramel, toffee, banana, traces of dark fruits, sugar, strong spices, strong Bel yeast, lime, strong bitter hops and strong grass. Body: Mid to light. Slick and slightly creamy palate. Mouth Feel: Fairly good maltyness in a pretty thin backgraound, quite watery to the tongue. Strong booze hit first, followed by subdued banana and some dark fruity esters. Sugary sweet but definitely not cloying. Strong spicyness and strong yeast. Good limey hops to round. Solid! Alcohol: The 9.5% booze hits you in nose and tongue right from the start, but it never came across as harsh nor warming. It is in your face but understated unlike most strong Tripels or BSAs, so this is very very easy to down without significant knock ons. Excellent! Hoppiness: Light grass in nose. Lime, spice, and strong grass in taste. Bitterness, mixed with liquorices is strong for a lasting, close to strong astringent sweet malty finish. After Taste: Wet. Sweet, boozy and spicy to mouth. Comments: Compare to other Belgian Tripels, this one preserves most of the style’s hoppy and boozy attributes, yet somehow it’s a bit too watery and there’s a flesh of empty feeling about it. Other than that, it’s fruity aroma, strong Bel yeast, well-made booze and spices are the highlights. I will like it more if it’s richer and in a smaller dose!
3.4 Bottle from Market Street Wine Shop downtown. Pop the cork - holy shit. I have never seen such pressure behind a cork. It hit the ceiling and disappeared somewhere. Hazy dark golden with lots of floaters and a large large large off-white head. Smells of banana, bubblegum, yeast out the ass, apple, rubbing alcohol. Taste is pleasant. Apple, pear, wheat, rubbing alcohol, dried apricot (the kind you get in plastic bags in the health food section), spices. This is pretty tasty.
2.7 Bottle share at Leighton’s. As ’Moa St Josephs’. Thanks to The Kernel for supplying this one. Hazy orange, still, small off-white head, dotted lacing. Aroma is varnish, apple, slightly sour fruits. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste has more varnish and apple, booze showing up, dry spicy finish. OK at best.
3.1 Bottle shared in London - big thanks to the Kernel RotBox. Pours clear copper with pretty much no head. Lots of rich, sugary bread and fruit in the nose, some apples, dough, yeast, wheat, dates. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with light alcohol bump, a little apple sauce, doughy wheat. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with soft carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish, sugary, bready, more wheat, some toffee. A heavy-hitting tripel. Not super drinkable, but not terrible.
2.6 Bottle for the Kernel Rotbox. It pours clear rich gold with no head whatsoever. The nose is weak, mellow, honey, apple, pear, grainy, porridge and riding pudding. The taste is rich, oily, chewy, honey, cereal, porridge, fatty, butter, stewed apple and pear skin with a slick finish. Medium+body and straight up flat. Pretty fucken weak and flat. Knackered.
2.9 Bottle split at LKS, thanks to Mother Arch rot box, 21/01/16. Clear golden orange with little in the way of a head. Nose is earthy fruit, hint of orange, straw, light caramel, touch old. Taste comprises figs, dates, caramel, marzipan, dried apricot, spice, fruit loaf. Medium + bodied, flat and lifeless, sweet licks in a light booze driven close So so
4.7 Poured from a 750ML bottle into a pint glass at the World of Beer in Cary, NC. This beer has a great dark golden color that is slightly murky with a large white head. the aroma is full of fruit and spice and is outstanding. The flavor matches the aroma and it is one of the best tripels I have had.
3.4 on tap at Eulogy n Philadelphia; gold color; spicy aroma; lots of tropical fruit in the flavor; also spicyclove and pepper notes; sweet malt base
4.2 A: Delicious! Lots of caramel! A: golden, white foam, frothy, T: heavy cloying sweetness, but I like it! P: full body, creamy, O: The star of the night!!
3.2 Cloudy, light brown pour, no head (even with encouragement). Nose is cherry, yeast, and booze. Middle is caramelized grain and some spice. Finish is orange and alcohol. Just OK.
2.2 Beerfest Asia, Singapore on 25/06/15. 50cl corked bottle, shared. Hazy golden colour with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, fruit, some spices, but sweet. Floral notes on tasting, with an overpowering sweetness. Yeast and fruit in the background. Just too sweet to be enjoyed - I like candy, and I like beer, but not together! Tastes like a sweet sparkling wine.
2.3 50cl bottle from FreshChoice Roslyn, NZ. Hazy yellow/gold color with an average white head. Aroma: lightly malty, spices, alcohol, sugar. Flavor: moderate sweet. Medium body, oily without carbonation. (Bad) Alcohol/phenol finish. Not a good triple...
2.6 Pours hazy medium gold with one finger of rocky white head, good retention and lacing. (3/5) Nose is yeasty, dark fruit, caramel/toffee malt, banana and clove. (5/10) Taste is moderate sweet, very mild bitter. (5/10) Medium to full body, prickly carbonation, off-dry boozy finish. (3/5) Meh. Slightly past its best before, OK, but I dunno how much better it would be fresh. This is the type of triple I don’t really prefer: malt-forward and fuller-bodied, instead of crisp and dry. The ABV is intrusively present as well, with the heat feeling like an unbalanced afterthought. Couldn’t be bothered to finish it. (10/20)
4.1 Hazy in appearance with yeast at bottom. Smells like bananas and bread. A strong taste of bananas up front and in after taste. Very little clove flavour. Bready with a slight sour dough taste. Little to no hop flavour. Nice mouth feel. Slight alcohol warmth. For $6.99 NZ for a 500ml bottle at 9.5% this is a very good deal!
1.9 Very disappointing. I guess I’m not the target market, being a hop-head, but this was barely drinkable. Sickly sweet and caramel flavours with dominant alcohol. Tasted like Lion Red spiked with a double shot of cheap vodka. Looked great, but that’s all.
4.0 500ml bottle poured cloudy yellow with a busy fruity spicy aroma tastes tangy fruit yeast malt a bit sweet a bit sour very nice
3.1 Hazy golden with thin head. Floral , malty aroma with notes of grape, alcohol and bubblegum. Yeast , spices , fruits ... Looks like a good taste , but sweetness is overwhelming as for tripel.
3.1 Nose banana, bubblegum, floral. colour pale, golden, minimal head. heavy cloying sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, medium body, slick feel, lively,
2.6 Bottle into small tulip glass. Basic hop nose. Cloudy amber with lasting white head. Champagne carbonation. Smooth caramel taste. Finish is smoky/sour with alcohol notes. Raisins present. Not really my thing.
3.8 Bottle. Hazy golden color, white head. Aroma is yeasty, sweet notes, raisins. Balanced sweet taste, very belgian, yeasty, sweet fruits.
4.0 Pours cloudy orange-gold with small white that leaves nice lacing and skim. Aroma is tangy orange, wood, candy, spice. Taste follows with peppery clove notes bursting through the sweet fruit. There’s a bit of heat, but good brewing technique makes it seem organic from spices rather than a function of the alcohol. It’s a long way from Belgium, but this is a nice homage to the tripel style.
