Modern Times Black House

Modern Times Black House

Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

3.8 Can. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee. Good.
3.7 2 finger beige head. Dissipates rather quickly. Spiderweb lacing all over. Pitch black beer. Aroma of amazing espresso, earthy soil, dark chocolate and burnt leathery notes. Taste of dark chocolate, rye bread, dark roasted coffee and a hint of soapiness. Mouthfeel is light but with a sticky, adequately plump body. Medium-low bitterness. Low carbonation. Very drinkable. Overall: One of few great single stouts out there. Was better the first time I drank it a couple of years ago but excellent when you crave a lighter stout without it being a watery, overly roasted mess.

3.8 Black with a brown head - Roasted malt aroma - Roasted malt body with some coffee flavours and nicce bitterness - The roasted malt and coffee flavours goes into the finish - This was good
4.0 Black pour, mocha head. Nose is coco and chocolate. Middle is sweet coco, smooth coffee, blackened malt, touch creme, currants, sneaky little woody undertone. Finish is bittersweet, balanced, delicious.
4.7 Can from Malt Traders on 8 January 2021. Quite possibly the best coffee stout that I have had. Dark and roasty with a strong coffee flavour that hangs around long after the beer is gone.
3.8 Carbonatació i retenció fluixes. Cafè, xocolata, munt de malta torrada. Bona coffee stout
3.7 Aroma is coffee, roasted malts and caramel. Taste is mildly roasted dark malts, coffee and vanilla. Pretty sessionable.
3.7 Can. Dark pour, frothy head. Chocolatey aroma. Lots of roast and coffee. Some licorice sweetness. Milky mouthfeel, slightly chalky. Decent.
Sabor a café, chocolate negro, toffee y malta tostada con notas a bizcocho, nueces o almendras, avena y ligera madera quemada. Dulzor y amargor medios con regusto medio-largo. Textura semi-sedosa, cuerpo medio y carbonatación baja.
4.1 Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of roasted, slightly caramelly malt, dark bitter chocolate and a strong coffee aroma that is rather intoxicating. Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, slightly caramelly malt and dark, bitter chocolate and coffee, as well as hints of licorice and tobacco. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, chocolate and coffee lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. This is an excellent coffee stout that is quite roasted, dry and bitter, with a great coffee presence that is enhanced by some bitter chocolate and licorice, making for great balance of flavors,
3.6 I have been aware of Modern Times for some time now, they do not have distribution where I live. But I did obtain a mix of stouts from Tavour with Black House included. Tonight's tasting is being shared with my son over the internet since he has a 16 oz can of the brew also. I picked my Great Heights snifter for the occasion, the pour is a dark brown, one shade short of black with a small rim of beige foam. I take a drink. A very nice fullness for a basic stout, just to begin with. The taste is strong with the coffee, licorice, a hint of caramel and nice with the malt. I would buy and drink again.
3.7 Thin black pour with rocky head. Tones of roasted malts and a very subtle coffee flavour. Light but right
4.0 Heavy coffee, thick stout, very flavourful
4.5 Servida en Copa Cervecera. Aroma regular y buen color. Notorio amargor muy agradable y fuerte sabor a café.
3.4 Can pint from Beer Republic webshop. Tasted at home. 17.6.2020. Pour it dark color with small white head. Aroma light coffe, roasted malt. Taste light coffee, some thin flavor and light easy drinkable stout woth roasted malt flavor, light finish, astringent finish
3.7 6 week old pint can A: Poured a huge long lasting tan head atop a dark molasses brown to black body. S: Heavy on coffee with rich chocolate and caramel. T: Roasty but smooth without tasting burnt. Coffee up front, a little bitter chocolate from the nose and just a hint of caramel sweetness to finish. M: Light, thin bodied and smooth textured with soft carbonation and a sticky finish. O: Well blended, balanced and subtle flavors along with a reasonable ABV make this a very urbane example of the style.
Sehr lecker.
4.4 They brew their own coffee so you know it’s gotta be good. Not overly roasted and has a very delicate finish. One of the rare stouts where you’ll drink 3 and still want another.
3.4 Almost, but not quite. Starts with a tasty flash of chocolate, roast, and coffee, backed up by hints of anise and cascara, and a subtle caramel-tinged sweetness underneath. Finishes with a decent amount of java and roast, but never quite develops the depth you want in the style. Coffee first, stout second, which is the opposite of what it should be.
3.6 Pint can poured into a glass. The beer is a dark ruby to brown with a beige head of foam. Roasty and creamy malty coffee notes. Earthy and roast heavy taste. Medium body and medium carbonation. Reminiscent of ice cream.
