Modern Times Booming Rollers

Modern Times Booming Rollers

Named for The Big Lake of the Booming Rollers in Carl Sandburg’s "Rootabaga Stories"-- a beloved collection of fantastic children’s stories--this beer is an aggressively hopped Citra, Motueka, and Centennial IPA. It’s safe to say this will be the juiciest, mind blowing-est, most palate seducing creation to escape the Lomaland Fermentorium to date. The tropical hodge podge of hops and 6.8% ABV make it a prime candidate for crushing as we cruise into the heat of SoCal summer.

2.5 Can. Light amber, with a slight haze. Just a thin head. The malts on this are fairly chewy, and the citra not all that bright. Thinking bog standard IPA, a bit yeasty, not really to the Modern Times standard.
3.6 Clean, simple tallboy can. Misty, light golden pour with an impressive, spongy almond head. Slightly candied pale aroma, with some orange zest. Nicely balanced, not *too* anything. Body is listing slightly heavy, but it doesn't strike you as dense. Good residual carbonation. Aftertaste is esteric. Solid, on a 100 degree Tallahassee June day. Trader Joe's, Tallahassee.
3.5 16 oz can purchased to go at Irene's Tap Room in Phoenix, Arizona. Canned on 2 17 19. The pour is a slight haze yellow orange with minimal white head. The aroma is citrus floral and cracker malt. The taste is the citrus, floral and cracker malt along with a decent amount of mineral and earth. The palate us medium bodied with soft carbonation and a nice mineral finish.
3.3 Light gold color, some lacing a nice beer but not a boomer. Just overall thin and average. 11/19 can but not much difference, fair fragrance, not much body.
3.6 16 oz can to half-pint glass (shared with the Mrs.). Modern Times just hit Indiana distribution last week, so I was disappointed when I got home and realized that this IPA was canned over 2 months ago (on 03/20/2019). Anyway, looks good; a fairly transparent golden orange with fizzy finer eggshell head and good carbonation. Smells and tastes of fruity (Citra) and bitter hops with some caramel alongside a moderately bittersweet backbone. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and moderately bitter. Good, not great. Probably better fresher.
3.5 Pounder: Pine needle nose. Clear amber, medium head. Grapefruit, grass. Medium body, easy carbonation.
4.0 Ar: Lychee, pine, and moss; light, clean, slightly sweet malt; a bit of cocoa and rose. Ap: Pure gold and clear; large off-white head with great retention, texture of sea foam; recedes very slowly, leaving gooey lacing along the glass sides. T: Passionfruit and mango; some pine and tangerine; medium-low sweetness with a pure and slightly caramel malt flavor; bitterness is medium; lemon and toast; finish is citrus and tropical fruitiness. M: Medium-light body with high carbonation; very smooth, rich yet crisp. O: Spectacular IPA; bright and satisfying maltiness with fresh, complex tropical and citrus hop flavors.
4.0 Melon, stone fruit and malt aroma. Clear light gold. Taste is light hops, melon, tropical, fruity, bitter stone fruit, and some wheat. Clean tasting ipa.
3.9 On tap at Owen’s Ordinary in North Bethesda, MD. Clear, bright yellow-orange wi an off-white head and good lacing. Aroma of citrus, pine, dank tropical fruit and peach. Taste of pine, citrus, melon, grass and stone fruit. Medium body and medium/low carbonation. Nice balance and complexity.
4.4 It's been too long since I've had some SD IPA in my life, and Modern Times' recent arrival in Nebraska seems like a perfect reason to enjoy one. Booming Rollers pours a hazy yellow-orange. Nose is beautifully dank and tropical. Heavy citrus, stone fruit, melon, and grass on the palate. Flavor manages to be intensely hoppy yet restrained on the bitterness. Sticky, juicy feel. In terms of feel, this beer starts bright and finishes dry. It's as lovely as you'd expect for an IPA from Modern Times.
3.2 Citrus and some pine. Golden pour with good head and lacing. Some saaz type pils. Light bitter end. Not much to this. Tap at brewery.
3.7 Canned. Slightly opaque gold pour white head. Grapefruit, tangerine sone tropical fruits. Pretty good
3.9 Another winner from modern times... Pours hazy gold, light beige head, sticky lace. Smells sweet, piney and peachy. Creamy, yet juicy feel. Pine, pepper, stone fruit, melon. A fun version of the style.
3.5 Nose is big and wonderfull. Flavor is nice but kind of disapointing compared to teh aroma. Otherwise fresh and dank.
4.0 Piney, green, hoppy bouquet. Rich golden Amber filter. The Citra hops reak havok of hoppy greens and light citrus/fruit. 6.8% ABV is a rich and welcomed delight. "Booming Rollers" is all the bang for the buck.
3.8 Can thanks to Adam! Pours a near clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a light pine and bitter citrus with a hint of tropical fruits and a light bread note underlying. Flavor combines light pine and slightly earthy citrus and has a hint of tropical fruits and grass underlying.
3.7 16 oz. can from hayduke that we had together via facebook chat. Some haze in this golden beer with one finger of white foam. Aroma is citrus and mango and is pleasant. That is tasted along with melon zest and a nice zingy bitterness. The mango dominates and in a very nice way. This is just plain ol' tasty. An enjoyable beer.

3.9 From a 16 oz can pours gold with a white head. Aroma is somewhat earthy, topical and stone fruit, and some citrus. Medium body. Flavor is quite dank with a lot of the fruit. Bitter finish. Good beer.
3.9 1 pint can - the pour is a semi cloudy orangey gold with a med off white head. Complex aroma with juicy fruity hops, citrus and some funky yeast. Delicious and layered with flavors like big juicy citrus, light pineapple, orange pith and a slight floral note.
3.5 Can. Poured a hazy golden color with a medium sized head. Citrus with some pine and fruits.

3.4 Draft at Bru Craft. Hazy gold. Soapy white head. Lots of foam. Complex but modest hop mix. Earthy, grassy, tropical citrus hop resins. Bit malty but not overly sweet. Well balanced.
3.4 on tap at Crafty's in Northeast Philly - cloudy yellow color. Slight tropical aroma. Decent hop flavor.
3.6 Pale golden pour with a white soapy head and light lacing .... aroma of piney hops, grapefruit and orange, some rind and dankness .... taste is of piney hops, grapefruit, orange, sugary and candied caramel hops, dank and rindy ... old schoolish .... piney and west coast goodness but a tad too sugary
3.5 16oz. can. Shared with the RB Crew on the 09/05/2018 at "Mikkeller Viktoriagade". Cloudy golden to orange colour with a lacing white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, plastic, lemon and some grassy hops. Taste is medium fruity and hoppy but not so fresh, altought was canned 1 month before drinking. Piney and slightly bitter finish. Next one please!
3.7 16 oz can. Canned on 02/16/2018. (Sidewalk Deli & Liquor) San Luis Obispo, CA. Slightly cloudy golden color with a small white head. Citrusy hoppy aroma with mild bitterness, lemon, cookies, some malty sweetness and freshness. The flavor is fruity and citrusy hops, lemon, moderate bitterness, cookies and sweet caramel malt. Tasty.
3.0 Can. Hazy orange color with white head. Aroma is sweaty, tropical fruits, a bit muted, a bit too much petroleum. Taste is sweaty, petrol, yeastcake. Silky mouthfeel with fizzy carbonation. Not too convincing.
4.0 Pint can. Bright tropical fruit aroma of mango and lychee with notes of stone fruit, grapefruit citrus and a little bit of pine resin. Pours cloudy orange colored with a huge off white head that has excellent retention but little lacing. Starts with mango and lychee flavors as well as a bit of stone fruit hoppiness. Finishes dry, but quite smooth with grapefruit hop citrus and acidity as well as subtle pine resiny hop bitterness. Really nice ipa from the folks at modern times.
