GUATEMALAN COFFEE AGED IN BOURBON BARRELS

MALTS:

TWO ROW - DARK CHOCOLATE - MUNICH - PALE CHOCOLATE - MIDNIGHT WHEAT - FLAKED BARLEY - C170 - CARAPILS

Modern Times is the first brewery/roastery in the world to make beer with barrel-aged coffee beans. The barrel-aged coffee adds layer upon layer of rich bourbon, oak, and vanilla character to the underlying nutty, floral, full-bodied Guatemalan coffee. As a result, City of the Dead is an outrageously complex and flavorful stout, even though the beer itself has not spent any time in barrels. You can buy yourself a bag of our house-roasted barrel-aged beans - and even sign up for a coffee subscription - at moderntimesmerch.com.

3.8 Aroma is strong coffee and chocolate. The flavor is coffee, chocolate, dark malts, fruit and an acidic/slightly sour finish.
3.7 Can coffeeground, cold coffee aroma. Dark brown, low offwhite cream. Creamy dry coffee milky creamer, a hint iodine. Medium body, sparkly creamy. Dry chocolate and fruity Ethiopian note.
4.3 650ml bottle at home, bottled June 2017. Pours completely black with some initial head, dissipation occurs quickly though. Aroma is absolutely lovely, a lot of roasty coffee, nice dark malts, some caramel and chocolate. A lot of bourbon in there too, which gives it a lovely edge and some vanilla. Medium to big body. Flavour is dominated strongly by coffee, but has a good malt base. Some caramel but mostly a rather clean malt profile. Really light still for 7.5%. The finish is all about the barrel aged coffee - bourbon and vanilla and lots of intense roastiness. So interesting, as I do feel a difference to most barrel-aged beers - I do taste that it's just the coffee which has been BA, as it's the coffee flavour which is rich and bourbony. Amazing beer!

5.0 Excellent brew. Chocolate and caramel notes. One of the best I have had!
4.5 Smell of chocolate, malts, dark roasted coffee. Very dark brown with medium tan head. Taste of roasted coffee, chocolate malts, sweet chocolate, and barley. Smooth consistency and milky. Very nice.
4.7 On yap at Modern Times brewery. Pours dark black with a little beige head. Roasted malts and coffee beans aroma. More of that plus vanilla, dark chocolat. Wow that was delicious. Roadted coffee aftertaste. Complex, silky smooth, no bs, bomb.
3.9 On tap at Mikkeller Tokyo. Pours a dark brownish black. Strong but smooth aroma. Medium bodied with nice malt flavor. Nice.
5.0 2015. Aged two years. Delicious barrel aged stout.
3.9 22 oz beer from tavour. aged about a year. Super dark and rich coffe flavors. One of the most pitch black beers that isn’t barrel aged. Only really two notes with chocolate and coffee. But really strong notes.
3.6 650ml bottle. Near black with tan head. Aroma is big coffee, barrel, roasty. Big coffee bean taste, bitterness lingering. Slightly creamy feel.
4.1 Bomber bottle. Coffee, dried fruit, roasted malts and chocolates. But what comes through strongly in the tastes is the booziness of the bourbon.
4.7 Uff crime crime
4.0 10-09-17 // draft, tasting paddle at BrewDog Shoreditch. Deep Brown, small beige head. Loads of coffee, first in the nose than in the Aroma. Along with roasted malts, bitter chocolate. Coffee bitter finish. Great.
3.9 Taster at Belching Beaver Vista. Almost Black with offwhite head. Coffee and wood aroma. Coffee, Chocolate and wood!
3.8 Draft. Pours a medium, retained, light beige head, with light lacing, over a clear dark brown (SRM 35) body.......nose is roasted malts with cocoa, chocolate, coffee, mild vanilla, whiskey hints.......taste is cocoa, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak, mild whiskey, with light caramel sweet hints, finishing moderately coffee, hop bitter......mouth feel, medium body, mild alcohol heat, moderate carbonation. This is a lovely, complex beer in both aroma and flavor, which is appropriate for the time of year, and is easy drinking. BJCP 8/3/16/4/7
3.5 22floz bottle, BOD: 08.17.2017, thx olibeer, mug glass. Appears near black in color with a small brown head. Smells like used coffee grains and has a fairly boozy underpinning too. The concept is different with coffee in bourbon barrels. I didn't inquire into the process, but after thinking about it, I'm left to wonder if all this means is that ground coffee sat around in these barrels for a while before being added to this beer. Carob and coffee that has been on the warmer too long are what I taste in a hearty and gritty palate. Decent, but found it be a rougher ride than expected.
3.8 Draft pour at Cooper's Alehouse, Seattle. A near black pour, slight ruby tint. Coffee roast forward aroma. Inviting. Morning time feel. A bit of a mocha flavor. Good chocolate presence. Toasty malt. Medium thickness for a stout. Coffee bean like lingering bitterness, but with a mellowing caramel note. Good stout overall. Would love this in an AM setting.
3.7 Cooper’s, Seattle. Lacing brown gray head on darkest cola brown. Nose of muddy malt and coffee. Fair stout, bitter malt, touch of burnt coffee. Licorice. Not bad, but but exactly my favorite profile.
3.9 Tap at Walters, Pours a black color with small off white head and nice lace. Notes of coffee, cinnamon, roasted malt, licorice, plum, dark chocolate, and beans. Medium bodied with moderate stickiness. Nice imperial
4.0 Deep dark brown with a khaki head. Aroma is bitter black coffee, dark chocolate, and chocolate syrup. Taste is black coffee, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, bourbon, and smoky. Medium bodium. Very good beer.
3.8 Bomber. Clear dark reddish brown with a frothy tan head that lasts in a ring and laces. Aromas of coffee, roasted malt, wood, caramel, light vanilla and dark fruit; plum and raisin, Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, raisin, plum, vanilla, and light caramel. Medium bodied, smooth with dry finish. The finish has a largely vanilla flavor though a lingering roasty/vanilla after.
4.0 Deep brown pour with fast dimishing, thin espresso head. Cold brew coffee, cinnamon, walnuts. Taste is loads of bittersweet coffee which leaves room to some nice, not at all overwhelming bourbon/whiskey notes. Additional flavours of dried dark fruits and caramel. Nice, well-rounded texture with medium carbonation level. Very good, very drinkable.
3.8 Poured from bottle thanks Willrunforbeer cola brown with red hues and a thin tan head. Aromas of coffee roasted malt caramel notes and mild bourbon. Taste is coffee chocolate light roast slightly thin mouth feel.
3.8 Bomber from Julio's. Bottled 9/25/17. Pours dark brown with a light beige head. Aroma is dark chocolate, dark coffee, bourbon. Flavor isn't as nice as the aroma. It's dark chocolate, dark coffee, bourbon, but seems a bit flat.
4.0 Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a nice large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt notes with black cholate note and some bourbon notes with floral coffee notes. Taste is a mix of bourbon notes with some black chocolate notes, roasted malt with nice floral coffee notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Nice level of complexity, balance and good overall drinkability.
4.2 Well the coffee is a bit much in the beginning. But it gets better. A thick beer, but quite tasty.
4.2 Taster at taproom. Pours like espresso, thin tan lacy cremation head. Big coffee and roasted aromas. Smooth mouthfeel but some welcome booze heat in the back. Lots of coffee stouts can be too in your face. This is well balanced well made and a really solid example of "how to".
