Mont des Cats

Mont des Cats

Mont Des Cats is a trappist abbey in Northern France, a few kilometres from the Belgian border. They do not have a brewery in their monastery, so their beer cannot show the Authentic Trappist Product logo. But it doesn’t get much closer – they have their beer brewed by the monks of Chimay!

Developed independently to the Chimay range, the beer is a lovely copper colour. The link to Chimay is evident in the distinctive Chimay yeast character, in both the aroma and taste.

A pleasant caramel malt sweetness introduces the beer, being joined by hints of dried fruits, gentle spices and an earthy, herbal hop character. As the beer progresses, the bitterness seems to build toward a nice lingering finish.

The abbey only makes one beer, with no intention for more. The abbey is recognised as a Trappist Monastery, allowing them to use the term on the labeling. But as the beer is not brewed on their own premises, the beer is not a Trappist ale.

3.2 Bottle. Amber, frothy head. Caramel, apple, lemon, mix of herbs. Taste upfront herbal bitter, gradually developing sweetness.
3.7 Me la he bebido sin darme cuenta. Eso es bueno??
4.0 Good beer!
3.3 Bottle bb 12/22. Slow motion gusher. Dirty amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a lasting tighter fat coat. Dried fruit aroma with butterscotch and bubblegum. Odd. But the taste is more compelling - hard to say whether it's less sweet than expected but firmish bitterness ties things together. After a while there's a hint of sour plum. Interesting.
3.5 Old rating from 21-11-15 - A 750ml bottle brought back from Cassel in Northern France. Pours a cloudy brown colour with a beige head that lingers. Aromas of caramel, spice & malt. Tastes of caramel, spice, apple & malt with quite a alcoholic aftertaste. Overall a decent beer without standing out from the crowd.
3.5 Birra dal bel aspetto ambrato. Gusto caramellato con sentori di miele e spezie. retrogusto leggermente speziato e alcoolico.
3.3 Bottiglia. Il gusto al naso è indirizzato verso speziato e vegetazione. L'olfatto viene stimolato in maniera sufficiente.
3.8 Pretty light for a Trappist, super honey tastes, especially in aftertaste, average bitterness
3.8 Bruin troebel bier met een beige schuimkraag. Smaak: zoet, honing , vanille , appel. niet slecht
3.0 Colore abrato opaco, con una schiuma corposa. Leggermente gasata sulla lingua e palato. Amara
3.0 Koperkleurig bier met ruime witte schuimkraag met bezinksel. Redelijk vlak, droog, met bier wordende afdronk
3.8 I have purchased this beer, at bootlegger, at Paris. Drinking and enjoying it, at home, in Epalinges, after a full day at Pampigny, due to the illness. In my point of view and copying the lessons for my daughter, this beer is correct. It is the great Belgian school and the knowledge of chimay, making this beer pleasant. The taste has notes of malt, rather smooth, sweet, clear note of sugar, toffee, fruity with automnal note of plum, a bit short in aroma at the final, classical hop, a good beer with Belgian cheese.
3.5 330ml bottle at Trappiste bar in Paris. Pours cloudy amber colour, big off-white head stays. Aroma is malty, nutty, belgian yeasty, some toffee, slightly floral. Taste is malty, nutty, husky, buttery, caramelly. Finish is crisp and dry. Pretty decent
2.6 classique mais bonne
3.0 Bottle at home. Dark color, middle foam size. Good balanced beer. Drinkable and fits into style.
3.7 Draught. Pours hazy brown with a large, creamy beige head, long retention. Moderate rich caramel and toasted bread malt, light stone fruit esters, dark fruits, light earthy hops, light hop bitterness, and a medium dry finish. Full body and moderate carbonation, nearly mouth filling sensation.
3.6 0.33l bottle, in chalice. Pours hazy reddish brown. Some spices, malt, yeast. Light to medium sweetness, medium bitterness. Quite easy to drink, velvety mouthfeel. Good.
3.4 Bottle @ home. Almost clear amber w a beige head, some lacings. Aroma medium malty (bread, honey, dark fruit), yeasty (light citrusy, spicy) nose. Flavor medium sweet, fruity and spicy, light bitter. Medium to heavy body, medium carbonated.
3.8 Amber and hazy with a compact head. Fruity, syrupy smell of caramel. Bittersweet taste with low carbonation. Long aftertaste.
4.2 Jättegod, amberfärgad, välbalanserad, smakrik, men besk
3.8 It has a strong yeast flavor. The taste is fair and balanced with pleasant bitterness coming a bit later. I just love this beer because it's flavorful, drinkable and kinda velvety.
3.6 330ml bottler served in a chalice. Pours a cloudy amber color forming a big bubbled light yellow color that forms some lingering lacings in the glass. Sweet and spicy nose. Strong notes of sweet caramel malts, honey, bready yeasts, dark dry fruits and earth. Sweet upfront taste. Again, sweet caramel malts, honey, candi sugar, bready yeasts, dark dry fruits and earth. Mild hops but persistent hops bitterness. Classic Belgian bittersweet balanced. Heavy body. Medium carbonation. Malts and dark dry fruits in the aftertaste. Good drinkability. Average.
4.0 24.05.19. A bottle at t'Hof van de Hemel, in Veurne, Belgium. Aroma: fresh yet sour yeast. Appearance: opaque light brown, very handsome creamy tan head. Palate: full-bodied and sticky, fizzy carbonation; complex bitter finish. Taste: medium-bitter, sherry, vinous fruits, some iron. A superior beverage.
4.0 The beer has an amber color that is a little swampy. It has a strong yeast flavor. The taste is fair and balanced with pleasant bitterness coming a bit later. I just love this beer because it's flavorful, drinkable and kinda velvety.
3.5 From the bottle. Dark amber with a creamy head that lingers. Not an overly aromatic beer: subtle notes of apricot, mixed candy, a dash of spice. Taste is mildly bittersweet with a pleasant if very subtle interplay of flavors. You have to pay attention to this one or it’s entirely forgettable. Medium body. Dry and warming at the end with a lightly bitter bite. Overall, good.
0.5 Slecht
3.0 Mycket aprikos, söt, maltig. Liten beska på slutet. Känns ej så stark
3.5 Thuis uit een flesje. Donkere amber kleur. De smaak vind ik wat tegenvallend voor een triple van 8%. Beetje vlak.
