Moor Raw

Moor Raw

Cask, Occasional;
RAW was originally commissioned to be the house beers for Real Ale Weston and the Royal Artillery Arms, both now sadly closed. The landlord and drinkers were already huge fans of Merlin’s Magic, but wanted something a bit hoppier. They were also intrigued with our unfined natural approach to beer. So we trialled three different unfined, dry-hopped versions of Merlin’s Magic.

Layering the herbal dry-hopped characteristics over the rich malt base, and padding it out with body and flavour enhancing yeast really transformed the already sessionable Merlin’s Magic into something even more enjoyable. Everyone really loves the result. Consequently we make it available to select pubs whose customers appreciate its natural nature and enhanced flavours. If you are lucky enough to find some you will be rewarded with a truly remarkable best bitter, and perhaps begin to understand that beer is often the better for having some opacity.

3.1 Appearance- Clear copper colour with substantial off-white foam. Aromas- Sweet and citrusy with touch of caramel, fudge and bread. Palate- Medium body with smooth texture leaving sweet finish. Taste- Sweet and malty with notes of biscuits and caramel but also with a citrusy hoppy tang that develops into more bitter and herby flavour. Overall- Not bad, fairly simple nothing too exciting.

3.4 Cask and keg, side by side, The Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Hazy orange gold with an off white head. Cask had more malt flavour but a bit thinner towards the finish. Keg had more hop aroma and a consistent mouthfeel. Both were lightly fruity with a leafy bitterness Good to do a side by side. Keg won overall.
3.1 330 ml can. (K-Citymarket) Tampere, Finland. Enjoyed on July 26 2018. Hazy orange color with a tiny head. Dryish grassy hops, dry maltiness and some earthiness. Dry and hoppy. Not the freshest can unfortunately.
3.7 Cask at Beer Geek. Surprisingly hoppy, moderate bitterness and moderate citrusy flowery hops character. Moderate body, med-light carbonation. Easy drinking. Quite good.
3.4 Cask. Pours hazy brown copper with off white lacing. Aroma has floral hops atop roasted malts. Taste is medium bitter once you get through initial sweetness and before the sour finish. Palate is medium bodied, oily texture, average carbonation, bitter sour finish. I liked this more initially but it became less remarkable as the glass thinned.
3.4 Cask at Ale&Hop. Bit hazy orange with creamy beige head. Dry malts, quite bready, soft apricot, creamy dough, light orange peel, grassy. Under medium sweet and almost medium bitter. Medium bodied with nice creamy feel, almost flat. I don’t care a lot for English style beers but this is quite OK.

3.7 330ml can poured into a lovely Hoegaarden Grand Cru stemmed tulip glass at home on 23rd Feb 2018. nearly two years out of date! I wouldn't have rated this if it had been 'off' or sour, it's not either. It's mellowed I suspect, but it still has a great aroma and flavour without losing it's condition in the can. Slight haze to the deep amber/orange body, white speckled head. Light caramel/toffee nose, taste also has an underlying maltiness below the fruity hop flavours. Nice balance, like the hop bitterness that over rides the malty sweetness. A very pleasant Bitter all round, even if it's well past it's BBD.

3.5 Restrained floral aroma in an amber pour. Laid back hop forward balance with a big malty body and crisp clean finish. Pretty much what it says on the tin?
