Mother Earth Dark Cloud

Mother Earth Dark Cloud

Steeped in a long history dating back hundreds of years, this "old-fashioned" beer is again in vogue. Lager is the German word meaning "to store," so this beer ages three times longer than our ales do. "Dunkel" means dark in German, but don’t let the color fool you, it is by no means heavy, overbearing, or bitter. In fact, it proves to be a very drinkable session beer.

2.8 Draft. Smooth and medium-light palate. Sessionable. Dry malt, chocolate, and cereal.
3.5 Pours dark brown with a finger of tan head. Aroma is rich smoked malts with nuts and dried figs and prunes. Flavor is malty but not thick, and with smoky character. The dark fruits are present but not terribly prominent.
3.6 My Bottom Line: Toasted bread, prunes and earthy hops dwell in a smooth body, constructing a surprisingly agreeable Dunkel-like lager. Further Personal Perceptions: -A ring of foam settles atop the mahogany-hued brown. -Apart from the fruitiness, this is pretty close to being an authentic Dunkel. -Drinkability is high despite the chewy malts and their sugars. -The flavor profile is balanced throughout. Bottle.
3.6 12oz bottle from Lowes grocery in Hickory, NC. Dark brown-copper pour, medium beige head. Aroma of bread, caramel, nuts. Tastes of bready grain, background chocolate, earthy, lightly bitter, nutty. Thin but creamy palate is nice. Approachable.
3.5 Light and easily downed dark lager that, although very mild on flavor and aroma, shows off a nice roasted maltiness. Short finish.
3.3 Pours a deep brown on tap with minimal tan oily head that leaves light lace. Aroma is roasted malt covered by lager yeast and fruity esters. Taste leans away from the today and mite toward sweet fruity esters and malt. Solid for the style, but unimpressive overall.
3.3 Pours very dark cola brown with a decent tan head that shows some legs. Aroma is bready malts and toasted grains. Perhaps a touch of caramel. Taste is quite rich - roasted caramel and toffee malt with a fine balance of noble hops. Dry finish with mild bitterness. Very good variation of the style.
3.4 Nice nuttiness in the aroma and flavor. Really more like a light-bodied brown ale than a typical dark lager.
3.2 Draft sampler. Medium brown with offwhite head. Sweet malts with molasses and nuts. OK.
3.4 From a bottle. Pours hazy brown with a fizzy off white head. Tastes like roasted malt, light sweetness, light earth. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like toasted malt, dried fruits, light raisin.
3.4 Bottle. Pours hazy brown with creamy beige head. Aroma is toasted and cereal malts, light woody notes, light dates, and some mixed notes. Flavor is bready malt base, light toast, some dark fruit notes, faint hops, and light woodiness. Medium body and carbonation.
3.1 Bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with a ring of off white head. Aroma and taste of roasted malts and chocolate.
3.7 Bottle. Beautiful chestnut brown with a nice off-white head. Taste is a toasted grain, not burnt bitterness.
3.3 Fair dunkel, recent bottle from NC trip. A bit much on licorice taste. Above average mouthfeel. Decent drinkability.
3.4 Very drinkable lightly roasted beer. Pours black with reddish tint and without much head or lacing. Light bitter finish. Grainy and good for style. Tap at rustico ballston
3.1 12 oz bottle. Clear dark brown with clingy beige foam. Nose is lagery with citrus pith and a hint of caramel. Taste about the same. Medium light with lively carb. Good for a lager with BBQ. I had a few.
3.3 Appearance- medium to dark (root beer) brown. Nice tan head. Light to moderate dissipation with some lacing, but nothing noteworthy. Smell- clean. Roasted coffee. Caramel and malt. Mineral quality (similar to an oyster stout). Taste- burnt coffee, cocoa, Mouthfeel- light body. Not too much carbonation. Bitter up front. Very crisp. Overall- good. Would recommend and have again. A solid American version of a classic German style. Cheers!
3.2 A great Dunkel from a local brewery. Would try anything from this brewery due to their success.
3.0 Bottle from grocery store, brown pour, malty, bland nose, a little hoppy, decent dunkel.
2.9 Sampled at D’vine’s in Columbia Heights from a 12oz bottle. Watery cola brown with some thick, creamy, off white head. Nose is standard, some malt, some clove, some nuts, a little over ripened fruit. Flavors are the same, sweet, mild fruit, mild malt. Watery finish.
2.7 Decent beer. Faint dark malt aroma. A little earthy. Bread crust brown color with a decent head. Average to thin palate with good carbonation. Not a heavy beer but coated the tongue well with flavor. Some roasted and biscuit flavors with a malt bite at the end. Not much of a hops presence, which wasn’t expected. Just OK.
3.0 Draft at SGD. Deep mahogany pour with a bubbly white head. Faint malt aroma of toast and pecans. Flavor is similar and light with a mild nutty bitterness at the end. Meh, kind of boring.
3.6 12oz bottle. Brown color with off white head. Malty and chocolate aroma. Slightly sweet taste. Really good dunkles.
3.4 Appearance: medium cola brown with a short, creamy, light beige head and average lacing. Aroma: light molasses, brown sugar, toasted nuts, mellow earth hops. Taste: as the aroma indicates. Finish: clean and smooth, with lingering balanced flavors slowly fading. Notes: Quite a nice example of the style, with a very drinkable palate.
3.2 Warner Robins, Ga - Lazy Growler - 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark, cola-like brown with a thin, but persistent off-white head. Some earthy potting soil notes in the aroma, a hint of light chocolate. Flavor is pleasant with s nutty presence, some hints of chocolate, a slight trace of molasses. Mouthfeel has a nice slickness to it. Nice session material.
3.1 Poured from 12 ounce bottle bought from The Veggie Wagon in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, tasted on August 8, 2013. Nice dark brown/ruby hue, sweet malty nose, flavor like the aroma but with a chemical taste that causes me to significantly lower my rating. I feel 3.1 is being lenient. Unless I got an old bottle, can’t understand the overall high marks this beer gets.
3.3 Bottle pour of dark caramel brown with foamy off white head. Aroma of toast and caramel malt. Taste of sweet malt with touches of walnut and brown sugar sweetness. Med lightly carbonated body with a clean and a touch bitter finish. Over all balanced drinkable beer.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with white head. Caramel, nutty, malty aromas. Caramel, brown sugar, syrupy, malty flavors. Pretty good American version of a dunkel.
3.5 Walnut, charred oak nose. Hazy ruby brown, medium head, some lacing. Sweet barley malt flavor, mild walnut accents. Finishes earthy. Medium body. Serviceable.
3.4 12 oz bottle at the Bucket Shop Cafe in Atlanta, Georgia. The pour is a light haze copper orange with a minimal off white head. The aroma has some nut and soft toast malt. The taste is clean, fresh solid Dunkel flavor profile. The toasted malt is the main character, with some softly sweet nut behind. The palate is light bodied, soft carbonation and a clean finish. Simple, well made, easy to drink.
