Muskoka Twice As Mad Tom

Muskoka Twice As Mad Tom

While the legend of Mad Tom is laden with mystery and intrigue, one thing remains clear: Mad Tom did things his own way. Twice as Mad Tom is an aggressively twice-dry-hopped Imperial India Pale Ale, that delivers a definitive hop aroma & unabashedly big bold flavour. We brew this beer with the road less traveled in mind, and in the spirit of old Mad Tom...we make no bones about it.

3.6 Orangey yellow pour. Has a strong pine aroma. Taste is very juicy and hoppy. More pine notes again. Lingering bitter finish. Very nice
3.6 473ml can, best before 2017-07-01. Pour golden, lightly hazy with a white foam that reduce as a ring. Aroma is resinous, peach and ethanol. Taste is malty, bitter and alcohol. No green hops. Medium body and medium carbonation. Bitter, oily and dry. Long malty and bitter finish.
4.5 Pours very bold and bright, hazy gold orange, soft and sticky lacing. Aroma is juicy, dank, malty - orange, grapefruit, caramel, damp leaves - very faint compost note here. Taste is lovely - fruit juice, pine, toast, woody hop bitterness, big bitter hop finish that isn’t offputting. I always liked this one in the past, but I must’ve caught it on the right day for my review, cuz I’m loving this at the moment. Well above the regular Mad Tom, a very good beer in its own right.
3.7 Pours a slightly hazy amber with a white head that thins and leaves some lacing. Aroma is citrus and sweet malts. Taste is sweet with a fairly mild bitterness. There are notes of bitter orange rind, sweet marmalade, and pungent pine in an excellent balance. The beer has a very light mouthfeel despite what seems like a full body. Much better than the lesser mad Tom if a bit excessive in its hops.
3.9 473 ml bottle. Hazy yellow colour, thick white head. Citrus-fruity, malty aroma with caramel and pine notes. The flavour is malty, with sweetish tangerine and notes of peaches, and a lingering bitter finish of resiny and floral hops. Good stuff.
3.0 Orange, small head, orange and marmalade aroma, orange flavor, bitter, mandarine, medium bodied.
3.7 Started a new rating on this one two years after buying this bottle. This double ages really well. The hop profile has changed but not diminished, adding elements of dankness and fruit rind - two great elements for a DIPA in my view. The malt and body have grown in richness with a dense caramel and apricot backbone working well with the hops. Stash away and see what happens!
3.2 Pours hazy orange-amber with a 1-finger off-white head. Citrus and piney hops aromas over a light note of caramel. Body is a little fuller than medium. Oily, with a dry finish. Resiny hops flavor over caramel malt. Maybe some citrus at the back.
3.6 Pale golden yellow pour with lots of white rocky head, very lively and lots of lacing .... Aroma of grapefruit, lemongrass, orange, caramel malts and light pine with hints of floral hop .... Tastes like a barrel aged IPA really different has a light vanilla like flavor, orange, grapefruit, lemon, rind and hints of a piney/floral hops .... Citrusy and rindy with solid balanced flavors .... Finish is citrusy with lingering malt and bitter dry hops ... Solid and tasty dbl IPA
3.5 Bright golden color with a smallish white head. Aromas of floor malt, Cedar and mild citrus. Full sweet start, with cedar, pine, lemongrass and mild oak. This reminds me of a few barrel-aged IPAs I’ve had. Very traditional (IMHO). Fairly hot in the finish and linger. This one grows one me. Some mango, nectarine and light melon come out as it warms. I like the traditional vibes, but still seem to like the new school ways a bit more.
4.1 Pours a clear yellow/golden color with a small white head. Very strong citrus aroma. Mainly tangerine, with a bit of grapefruit. Some peaches as well. Medium sweetness on the palate. Good carbonation. Small to medium bitter finish. Very fruity and easy drinkable for a 8.4% beer. Very very nice
4.0 Pours a lightly hazy gold. Has a malty and light citrus hop aroma. A strong malty flavor of fruits with pine, caramel, and hops. A dry malt and light bitter hop aftertaste.
3.8 Cuivrée et très trouble, quelques notes d’agrumes au nez, une grande amertume sur un sucre satisfaisant. On sent peu le 8,4% d’alcool. Au-delà de mes attentes.
4.2 Acquired from trade with Chopz. :) Pours a dark golden amber colour, with a nice finger thick creamy head. Good lacing and retention. Huge hoppy citrus aromas right in your face. Nice floral hop notes. Has a very hoppy flavour, pretty strong, with some malts but much less distinct. Hops are what it’s about. Very tasty and mostly just a tad hoppier than the Mad Tom. A bit bitter on the palate, but not in a bad way. Quite refreshing and the alcohol is well hidden. Thank you Muskoka! love it.
2.5 Bottle sample at a tasting at Max’s place. Thanks troubles. Clear golden. Aroma of graininess, malt, and stale hops. Sweetish flavor with malt, graininess, bitter stale hops. Medium-bodied. BBD is 7/16, but already it seems way too old.
3.5 355ml. bottle from the L.C.B.O. in Ottawa. The color is a clear amberwith a thin beige head. The aroma is of hops and more hops, peaches, herbs and some citrus fruits. The taste as above plus added malt to give it a good finish.A good double I.P.A.
4.2 A ton of pine and some orangey citrus on the nose. All resiny bitter hops on the palate. One of my all-time favourite IIPAs
4.3 Tangerine yellow-orange color. Lace sticks to the glass. Aroma is dank, oily hops, with a spicy malt (like a rye). There is a second wave of citrus that sneaks into the back of the nostril cave. The flavor is like pure resin: hop alpha oils are practically floating on top like an oil spill. It has a sticky, woody hop that is just supreme. A hint of something akin to apple skins? The feel is extremely sticky and oily. It’s magnificent.
3.8 Canada, eh? I knew hockey was awesome but who knew Canadian beer was awesome? This beer here is a nice dipa. Great hop aroma to go with a great hop taste. Palate is medium bodied making a easy drinker. Overall, I’m glad I got to try this. I would like to try Mad Tom. I bet it is solid as well.
3.5 Very nice imperial IPA. Poured a thick head and left nice lacing around the glass. Aroma was tropical hops and finish was a little dry but nice. At 8.4% you couldn't really taste the alcohol.
4.0 Loved the original Mad Tom, can;t say this is twice as good but definitely a strong brew. Light amber pour, medium frothy off-white head, good lacing. Nice sweet aroma, lots of pine. Tate is big and bitter pine backed up by a decent amount of sweet caramel malt.
3.5 Thanks to Steve for the bottle. Pours a light gold with a nice white head. Big aggressive citrus and pine aroma. Light malt body with big residual citrus pine hop bitterness in the taste Good stuff.
3.2 Bottle from LCBO. Should’ve checked the BB date - got it a week ago and it’s due already. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a fast dissipating creamy white head. The nose is... disappointing - the hops have faded, and giving an earthy note, yet I do get some sweet, unripe blood orange and malt sweetness, and resiny hints. Tastes along the same lines. But it’s light - the alcohol shines through, it really does. The thin crisp carbonation, the alcohol and finishing harsh bitterness don’t make for a successful trio. This one really seems to suffer from the past BB date (unlike the original Mad Tom, which was pretty nice). I’d give it a maximum 3.0, but as I sense it’s a nice beer if not the old age, I’m tweaking the score just a bit. I know I’m still not being fair. I’ll try to get a fresher one and rerate.
Merci Mark! (1580-070915)
3.2 17/VIII/15 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from a trade @ home - BB: 7/VI/15 (2015-1096) Thanks to cards04 for the trade! Note: whoops, didn’t see the bottle printing of the date when I got this one. Had I known, would’ve drunk it immediately, though I did save them in the fridge all this time. Another claim for brewers to put dates on bottles more clearly, if even at all. Clear orange beer, aery irregular yellowish head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, marzipan, alcohol, fruity, sugary. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, citrus touch, bitter, malty, marzipan, fruity. Aftertaste: very bitter, some mango, citrus, bit oxidized, malty.
3.5 On tap at MacGregor’s for Phil’s last week. Sweet and spicy aroma with caramel and citrus and pine. Clear orange amber under a white cover. Caramel malt with some resinous pine and faint citrus. Medium body, moderate carbonation with a lightly bitter finish.
2.4 I prefer Tom when he’s mad but not double mad. A bit too much Tom. Booze not well hidden in nose or taste. Absolutely no subtlety going on here. Grainy. Clear dark gold.
3.5 Bottle at tderoeck’s place. Smells almost like a barley wine, very sweet, malt, not an inviting smell. Taste is better than I was expecting, but it’s in no way on earth an IPA. Very sweet, malty, caramel character. However, not bad!
3.8 Big and bitter taste. Really nice floral aroma. Hazy orange in appearance with a thin head.
